>>714232806 (OP)Nintendo has always had a rough relationship with Brazil
In 1985 when the NES released a brazillian electronics company called Gradiente phoned Nintendo of Japan over their interest to bring it to Brazil too, talking about how arcades were popular and the country was in a period of economic stability, but they were denied for no reason given
In fact, many countries just didn't receive an official release of the NES, idk about all of them but I know no south american countries did
But.. We still really wanted it because we love videogames a lot, and being the creative idiots we are we decided to make our own NES-like machines, and the funniest part is that they were sold legally with big technology companies for at least ten years, because lawyers convinced legislators that "hey this is just like a DVD, it's a device to play this specific kind of media! (NES cartridges) we can make that!"
In 1993 an executive from Nintendo of America noticed this and tried to put an end to it, also launching Nintendo officially on Brazil and Argentina, but it was expensive, and SEGA had ruled the market for years
Sega noticed Nintendo's gap here and invaded, some games were even translated to spanish and portuguese which was INSANE
So latin america loves Sonic more than Mario nowadays
