A lot of visual novels are cheaper on Steam than directly from the devs, because they don't bother to implement regional pricing and Japan has some retarded game prices sometimes.
On Steam they have to go out of their way to not have regional pricing, and they don't because they don't mind supporting it, they just don't care enough to implement it themselves.
Easier payment processing makes a big difference too with some credit card companies deciding they don't want you to buy anime titty and blacklisting some websites.
