When the WiiU didn't sell to expectations, Iwata and the rset of upper management all took paycuts rather than fire their devs. That is a massive morale booster because it shows that even though it's a rough patch for the company, the boss still has faith in your work and the buck stops with them. And allows them to better power through times when Nintendo isn't doing well.

Also most importantly, they didn't fall into the massive bloated budget trap everyone else was. Like when they acquired Monolith Soft (Xenoblade devs), the very first thing they did was send them a team of accountants to teach them how to better manage their budget and time since they had a record for either not hitting deadlines or going over budget.

They don't spend massive amounts of money chasing popular trends, instead choosing to play to their strengths. They know what they're good at it try to build off of that. With any luck, Donkey Kong Bananza will be an improvement on the formula from Odyssey, since it's the same team and we're talking about two games with release dates nearly eight years apart. Also they must be treating their employees right because I can't think of any other developer or publisher where people have stayed for ten, twenty, over thirty years. Retention = experience = smart people who make good games. They try to keep employee turnover low. They rather infamously refuse to devalue their products. They don't sit there constantly gobbling up studios who then shed talent anyway. I think that this more each year. It's really the sweet spot for videogames. "Small" and flexible projects, making room for innovation and a huge number of different games at the same time.

The main problem is the tech and dev costs. It's just more expensive to make games, there is not much room for lets say 2D pixel games outside of indie. Nobody will pay 80 dollars for a ds/gba game. Companies should make them 30-40 bucks, they will be 100 times better and more profitable. But they now rely on flashy graphics and brand more than ever on the internet/social media era.
