Obsidian is the ONLY MS game studio (that isn't ATVI subsidies) pumping out titles near yearly. They are the ONLY purchase of MS's that isn't ATVI that shows something consistently.

Until MS figures out a way to executive meddle them to their death, they're a pretty safe studio to do shit with. Not all their output is going to be a Fallout: New Vegas, but as long as they pump out games, some folks will show up for them in a rotation and that's fine for MS's bottom line.

I loved Pentiment and enjoyed Avowed, but I wouldn't put too much stock on Obsidian not getting layoffs this very moment. They're keeping busy right now. Let's wait until they get into an inevitable lull period with one of their divisions.
They will never get fully shuttered cause their name is too valuable. At worst they'll be turned into IPslop makers. On top of that, I imagine Grounded 2 will probably be a pretty big success for them. I'm very curious to see if Outer Worlds 2 does well or not. I still have no clue how the first game succeeded.

That's actually a great example. Planescape Torment was a hard sell as a concept because when people think D+D, they think of high adventure like Dragonlance parties more than they do that, and sales on release reflected that.
But lets tighten it up. They dedicated code and assets for an entire character creator dedicated to create a wide spectrum of ugly and revulsive faces. A good chunk of early reception was nothing but people shitting on it. It's an expensive thing, and I'm willing to bet that the concept of being able to attach a wide variety of rainbow fungus to your face was not one that sold subscriptions or sales.. The game is first person anyways.

I hated Tyranny. Kills-In-Shadows is unbearable. None of the companions are memorable. The game is unfinished (Turns out Obsidian divested a lot of its resources to Deadfire lol, what Jews) and it doesn't even do solidly by its concept. Waste of a good concept and soundtrack. And the only good thing I remember about it gameplay wise is the end of Act 1. I didn't finish Wasteland 2 but I'd put it above Tyranny.
