The way events work in Blue Archive, in general, is like this.

You can also got with a Bonze rating, just means that the efficiency is worse, but it's also a good bit cheaper. These things are usually meant to survive for 10+ years depending on the brand (non chink shit), so the price is more than fair.

you can reroll the tutorial banner 10 times but you can only get students from the game's launch.
Then you get around 40 pulls from pyro/ticket rewards in your mailbox and you can either save them for the upcoming bluefes or try to get a good student.

More or less an afterthought. Devs have said they don't want to focus on it yet ever so often they release a student with a completely broken kit where if you don't have them you will suffer if you even remotely care to have a good rank. NY Haruna, Marina, S.Hanako and Kuroko are the gayest shit to ever have entered PvP and only just now, ~3 years later have Marina and NY Haruna fallen out of favor only because Kuroko basically invalidates both, superior invulnerability over Marina and NY Haruna can't do shit against Kuroko.
There's something to be said about how useless DEF tanks were vs. evasion tanks but they started putting evasion penalty debuffs that are generally hard to avoid now so DEF tanks have become better simply out of necessity.

PvP is auto battle. And it is very, very meta. It is basically a cadre of about 10-15 students. I'll summarize below
>A: EX cost
Shun and Summer Shiroko. These two absolutely, unequivocally dominate all PVP seasons because there is nothing stronger than an EX. Shun is without a doubt stronger than Shiroko because she gives immediate cost, but also hilariously can start targeting DPS instead of the tank because she is a sniper and not a front liner. These two are broken, full stop, no doubt, and they belong on every single PVP team without a doubt. Shun gives free EX at the start, Shiroko discounts all EXs by 1, it is a match made in heaven.
>B: Tanks
You generally want one or two. These are almost always without doubt Yuuka or Tsubaki. Hoshino (base) fills in this nicely because she counters Kuroko hardcore. You MIGHT see Sumire or Eimi but it is rare.
>C: Sweepers
Sweepers try to kill two, maybe three units with their EX. They come in all shapes and sizes, but you need damage, spread, and cost to match up. The Queen is Summer Hanako. Nonomi can fit in, same with NY Mutsuki. Big, huge damage over a huge area. Those two tend to hit the spot.
>D: Bursters
Single target. Basically, Iori, Haruna, and maybe Mika as she doubles as a dodge tank. They're generally tank killers, but they can occasionally snipe the backline.
>E: Very, very specific odds and ends, aka counters.
These are usually the second support besides Summer Shiroko. Utaha (level 2 support item) for distraction, Summer Ayane to kill Yuuka, Nagisa and Hibiki for AOE clear. Iroha for a prayer on an early use and easy sweep.
>F: Even more specific terrain units
This season, it's Kuroko. She's great given that she is so good on this arena. Otherwise, the above
Rarely anything else will do good.
It is not worth malding about because it is all random, it is all determined by stats/investment, don't ever pretend PvP is skilled in this game. Every match starts with Shun/Summer Shiroko

It's easy to mistake Shun as core because of how popular she is but you always could and still can play around not having her. The bigger crutch and must have is S.Shiroko but no one ever pays attention to her because she isn't a striker so people seem to forget just how absurd she actually is. And unlike Shun there's no RNG involved in her basic skill, it will always buff your team and give 1 cost reduction to everyone, unlike Shun who has 1/6 chance of activating her EX mid-skill activation thus robbing you of her 3.8 bonus cost AND draining 3 cost to activate her 9 out of 10 times useless EX skill to pelt enemy Kuroko forever and provide literally nothing of value..
