PC gaming would be nothing but 3 dudes in a garage games without steam. And you would have to mail order their game because there would be no distribution system. You seriously have no idea how much on life support PC gaming was from 2005 to 2009.

Now computers don't even use disks anymore because pc physical media is dead and all their money "buying games" goes into online licenses

DRM is not mandatory on Steam any more than "CD has to be in the drive" was mandatory on CDs. There are games on Steam you could just copy to another computer and play without Steam running. Granted that means the game can't have mandatory dependence on any Steam APIs, which is up to the dev.

I didn't act like it's the standard. DRM free games on physical media like CDs wasn't the standard either, genius or did you unironically think that back when we had CD physical media on PC, that we could just take the CD out of the drive and play the game? Cuz that's not how it worked. Even some pirated games needed the CD to be in the drive.
If devs implement DRM, then there is DRM - simple as that. All I said is that you don't need to implement DRM on Steam and there are plenty of games that don't.

In fact here, a game I bought on Steam, copied from 1 computer to another and then ran without Steam running. I do have Steam installed on that computer so the first line in console shows what it would look like if it was in fact running, but as far as the game is concerned Steam doesn't even exist because the game is on system wine which has no access to any functionality related to Steam. I could write this game on magnetic tape and play it 100 years from now.

Shut the fuck up about physical media already. It literally does not matter if your game comes on a round slice of plastic or as 1s and 0s over the internet. The real enemy is DRM, and I'm convinced physicaltards are paid by denuvo to distract us from that.

If you still want physical, then go back to being a console peasant, you oldfaggot.
Pc gaming is all about digital hoarding nowadays. Where the fuck am I to keep all these digital games(pirated and backups) if had them on physical? I need a warehouse to keep them.
Steam has its own skeletons in its closet, but it has saved pc gaming, and boosted linux popularity. Any victory against Microjeet is a good thing in my book

Just remember: Valve was the one that won.
Out of all the game devs that would've been the first to make a (hopefully universally inoffensive) game storefront on PC, it was Valve that did it first and edged out the competition.
I don't mean this to sound like they're saviors or that Steam is the best thing ever, but damn near all the competitors except maybe Itch/GoG are shit tier, so I'm glad we got Steam instead of Origin or EGS.
The worst, yet still possible, outcome would've been that all the game devs would run their own stores even more than they do now, so you'd have a launcher for basically every dev.

That said, piracy is still #1 if you live somewhere where they don't hound the shit out of you for it. Fuck launchers and DRM and all the added bloat that comes with modern PC gaming.
As long as Valve continues to remain relatively hands-off (and as long as my ISP continues to absolutely hound me at all times to make sure I don't torrent), I'm basically fine the way things are right now. Cheap shit on sale on Steam, Kemono/F95 for everything else.

>Yes I would rather buy physical boxes of pc games
You wouldn't be able to because the technological progress of disk space and bandwidth available to the average consumer would've driven publishers to digital only with their own launcher regardless of steam!
>Yes I would rather use websites with community forums
You wouldn't be able to because social media, Teamspeak, Skype, and Discord would all eventually kill them anyways irregardless of steam!
>Yes I would rather visit fan pages for mods.
And you still wouldn't as aggregate sites for multiple games like Nexus would kill almost all the fan page communities, and the ones that did exist for games like Rune are now all dead because eventually the 80 year old boomer that ran it croaks and all that content is lost forever!

Everyone likes to joke about the Steam monopoly but I genuinely believe it's the primary reason you don't see more PC users emulating games. If you needed to put more effort in to play different games you would see more people experimenting but when everything you want is one click away so it makes people too lazy to look for interesting things online

Rather "saved pc gaming". I remember how pre-Steam I could only curse when many less popular or indie games were out of my reach because local publishers would only sell what would guarantee profit. When Steam started to accelerate, I could suddenly get all those more niche games like Slytherine 4x and other strategy games.

Hard to see happening any time soon when unlike the railroad, oil, and steel, most of these digital monopolies run control over information and social engineering.

PC gaming was dying, as Epic and others completely abandoned it due to rampant piracy as well as retailers not wanting to carry PC games due to units sold.
Valve stuck with it, and kept promoting Steam. Eventually, publishers started dumping their games on Steam, and noticed sales that were significantly stronger than what they got with physical games before. Suddenly everyone comes crawling back. Now you have Sony starting to give up on console exclusives and publishing their shitware on PC. Outside of Nintendo's first party bing bing wahoo, the PC market offers the most at the highest quality possible.

Willing partners with Sweet Baby Inc and other DEI companies, actively injecting Steam with politics. Read why that is bad here.

Helped mainstream gambling lootboxes & microtransactions into the video game industry.

Rakes in 5-10+ billion USD in revenue operating a corrosive 80%~ monopoly over the PC market with it's unjustifiable 30% cut, only hires a handful of staff of which|most|are|wildly|incompetent|children|at|best and vastly overpays them. Valve having no shareholders being a private company, where does all of the money go? No one knows.

Engages in widespread censorship ranging from banning legitimate reviews to suppressing review scores just because they're gifted &/ not directly bought on Steam to frequently manipulating|game|review scores to banning reviews pointing out DEI to ghost deleting certain words to engaging in discriminatory moderation to banning game developers under false pretenses and much, much more.

Operate Steam with extreme hypocrisy, abandoning human-powered moderation for things being put on the platform except for their own games or threatening 2d game developers over uncensor patches while allowing other games like Outcast 2 to have bloodied, visible genitalia.

Integrated the use of the horrible anti-consumer scam DRM Denuvo into Steamworks despite the CEO citing piracy as a non-issue.

Banned all avenues of downloading mods outside of the dysfunctional Steam Workshop. This was done as an attack on their competitors (GOG, etc) that usually got some mods this way but this has also crippled things for server owners and even regular users that want to stop mods from updating (and breaking) themselves which can't be disabled.

Want me to keep going? You'll forget all of this tomorrow anyway.

Steam has the most transparent review system of any platform, letting you know the hours played and whether or not the game was refunded. They aim and highlight when games are brigaded.

There's 2 securoms. There was a passive one that was just a disk check with intentional bad sectors in specific locations (like cdilla and safedisc). The shitty intrusive one came after Starforce, I believe. They saw Starforce as a success because it was such a bitch to circumvent, and wanted to catch up.
KotoR 1 and 2 are both examples of passive SecuROM.

That's weird because I've modded plenty of my Steam games with mods off of the Steam workshop. In fact most of the mods for games I play come off the Steam Workshop, so I am not sure what you could possibly be referencing here

I love Valve but I wish they'd stop trying to chase another multiplayer microtransaction cash cow.
Dota2 was a rare fluke, maybe a once in a 50 year fluke.
The next 'innovation' isn't going to happen with games, just like the next innovation won't be a repeat of Steam's origin story of digital distribution, because now digital distribution is commonplace.
They should just dedicate a small team to periodically releasing single-player coop games, I guess something like Halflife: Alyx but not under a gimmick peripheral most people can't afford.

How many (non Blizzard) physical PC games do you still own, homie? Like seriously take a picture of your collection, at best it's a stack of jewel cases with CD-ROMs that can't be read on modern systems. You have to buy a Chinese USB CD drive off Amazon just to read them, that's assuming time hasn't flaked off a tiny piece of silicon making it unreadable.

It's soooo much better now with Steam, it's not even funny, and now the consoles are the ones drying up in terms of variety. All the weird indie games popping up for dirt cheap, some of them fresh riffs on old favorites. All the big companies publishing on Steam, constant cheap bundles spinkled liberally with gems, and the Steam forums are full of tips and tricks on how to run old stuff like Dark Messiah. You can get newer stuff on sale for PEANUTS without worrying about viruses raping the rectum out of your digital life and leaving a gummy prolapsed shit-tail.

Steam forever, baby, all my games in one place. If I want to get weirder or older, I GOG or Itch.

GOG itself may one day die. But oh! You can download every little thing and back it up on carefully labelled SD Cards, I guess, with a hard copy index to remind you what's where? Just to say you actually own it, naturally!

Listen, we're not here forever, and there's no point in everybody wasting their lives in backing up and worrying about every tiny piece of media that exists. If it's that important to gaming posterity, some weirdo in Siberia will have a dozen copies locked up in a vault for the digital archeologists to ponder over.

For now? Enjoy the cheapness, the convenience, the relative stability of Steam and play your games NOW. Dedicating yourself to the preservation of media over the present enjoyment and discussion of it is a soul-deadening path for most hobbyists.

I feel like you're missing the point, I'm not interested in the physical object, moreso the fact that after purchase the software is mine to do as I please with. I can run GOG games however I want and they aren't locked behind DRM that changes it's system requirements every few years irrespective of the game's compatibility.

Without the option for at least a nominal DRM, your store stays small, because the attraction is limited for even mid-sized publishers. Steam has gravity. It attracts everyone and everything with its Jovian pull.

This guy gets it. Back in the days of mega poverty I'd jump through all the hoops to get access to any video games. Now that I'm not afflicted with it, I'll only jump through hoops if the game is unusually valuable to me.

The funny thing is that steam DRM is a checkbox that a dev can choose to not use. There's a ton of games you can download that boot just fine without steam even running.

I'd call that a superior experience. And sure, most of those work without buying the game on Steam, but, as mentioned above, I'm not a nigger and thus I'm okay with supporting Valve so those features continue to exist.

There are all kinds of things people interpose between themselves and their supposed hobbies.

>Once I get a big enough collection of books, I'll finally start reading them seriously!
>Once I collect enough games, I'll finally start enjoying them!
>Once I can find a solution to my accumulation of media that ACTUALLY affords a moral solution to the ownership issue, that's when the fruits of the hobby are MINE AT LAST!

In truth, they're all just little shuffling librarians obsessed with the highest META of their hobby, its sorting and organization. Arguing with other librarians, adjusting their shawls and their little round glasses, sneezing in the dust from their card (or TARD) catalogues.

I don't think you get it. I buy games on Steam for convenience. I press a single button and everything just works, all my saves are backed up automatically. And the games are cheap too. I used to be a physical only fag but that was killed before Steam and consoles killed it too, it just took them longer.

Wrong. Even a dirt farmer in Venezuela can afford to play some awesome games, some of the greatest games, as long as he doesn't fall into the trap of pining over ULTIMATE MODERN GRAFX. Who needs realistic peach fuzz anyway, when a nearly full range of artistic expression flowered on the venerable PS2? When the funnest and snappiest games of the current year were put together by small gaggles of autistics -- or even individuals -- in basements?

Furthermore, who needs infinite mountains of physical shit when it's stored on the Internet for you?

Sure. Steam is great, a respected, consumer-friendly, hyper-successful model that has never been matched in its sphere. It also has fewer employees than any of those other, with their huge media production arms and panopticon censorship apparatuses. Needless to say, they don't keep very man sensitivity officers on staff.

You've literally given up your consumer rights to a corporation and you don't evrn know it. So, what happens when Gabe Newell one day decides to turn off Steam? Because he can literally do that. Your entire gaming library operates on gentleman's agreement from Steam that they won't fuck you over.

If I want to play Morrowind right now I can do that. Steam could be down and I would still be able to play the game - in less time than it would take you to find your plastic disc.
I also know that your plastic disc doesn't have any magic on it. So if a game is unplayable in its digital form its also unplayable on your CD. "Ask the Crew". It turns out that data is a bunch of 0s and 1s, no matter if it's on a hard drive or a bluray.
