still haven't finished it, but i find if funny, how that retard whined how he doesn't want to make metal gear games, but he seems to be incapable of making anything different. Also the stupid songs that play in some absolute stupid random moments with zero impact are laughable, i remember the first one having only like 2-3 and were placed in either emotional or cool moments/places, this is just " hey we had in the first game, lets do it again, but lets put 100 all over the place"

Death Stranding has Metal Gear DNA but its definitely its own thing too, it's much more surreal. Metal Gear is more high concept military fiction while DS is straight up supernatural sci-fi.

It's like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta to me, yes you can tell they were made by the same person and they have similarites, but they still feel distinct from eachother

I started playing the first one like two days ago and I have to say, I like the fucking thing. I thought I'd hate it like I hated RDR2, but it feels different.

What I do hate are all the mocapped Holywood actors. They even show their names when they're introduced.

But what annoys me most is the amount of cutscenes. There's so much cutscenes. I think I actually played like 30 minutes in the first 4 hours.

When I do play it's pretty fun, but I wish the game would let me play more.

Oh, wait till you get to the ending. The ending is pure Kojima without filter and without any editor that has the balls to tell him to shut the fuck up already. The game literally keeps explaining the very same thing you've already figured out hours ago five times in a row just in case you are retarded, to the point you are starting to believe Kojima is just taking the piss.

It honestly felt like it was trying to have the epic moments that happened in MGS4 like straight up ripping off the ocelot fight but i don't feel like the series earned those moments. Also, shit like when the DHV mecha has to stop and explain that it's deadman and heartman, it literally STOPS to explain what's happening. Fuck me man, he thinks his audience is retarded.

You didn't get it. This section specifically drags on to show the player that time passes extremely slowly on the beach compared tot he real world.
Sam was gone for like over a month, maybe even several months in the real world.
When Sam asks Deadman says "you don't want to know"
He potentially spent an entire lifetime or more. Many years went by for him just doing nothing
A single second in the real world could be days or more on the beach.
That's why Sam puts the gun to his head later here. He has been there for a very very very long time and just wants to fucking die.

It's also gets interesting when you compare the narratives of both games and see that they are almost complete opposites of each other in terms of style.
Kojima is so afraid the player is going to miss his "artistry" he keeps overexplaining shit at nauseam, Clair Obscur is the opposite. The game doesn't explain shit, it just leaves breadcrumbs for the players to figure out. The only exposition-heavy moment is between Clea and Alicia, and even then the game has fun with it, by having Alicia be annoyed because Clea is telling her the things she already knows.

This is why MGSV is the most compelling and interestingly written Kojima game. It's an extremely layered game where 90% of the writing is between the lines and what is left unsaid, full of rich subtext and visual motifs.
It's the most show don't tell Kojima game in my opinion.
It feels like the most artisanal project he has ever done.
Kojima presents Death Stranding as the most artisanal avant garde, but does not reflect his in the writing.
Of course maybe that is because he didn't like that MGSV was so experimental so he went back to something he is more used to. He seems to really like being both super lowbrow while also trying to be really highbrow.
Maybe MGSV was too highbrow and was missing too much of the B movie writing that he enjoys so much.

>I don't really wanna wait a year for a PC release
Death Stranding 1 got a PC release after only a little over half a year from the console release, like around 7 or 8 months I think, so if they follow this same pattern then I would say it's worth it to wait for the PC release.
Of course we don't know when that is so it could easily be a much longer window this time around.
Frankly I don't think it's that worthwhile getting a PS5. This has been arguably the most pointless and inconsequential console generation.
We are nearing the end of the generation and there are STILL big AAA games coming out on the PS4.

it's an amazing example of how good AAA games could be. the story is kind of iffy and there are so many conveniences for the plot, but it still works as a whole. the beach finale was, for the lack of a better word, epic. Kojima actually fucking did it lol.

E33 has the better story
Blue Prince is more original and maybe edges DS2in gameplay
but DS2 has unparalleled graphics and animations. music can be weird sometimes but it has some really good highs like the different versions of the BB theme. I love how it doesn't take itself too seriously and isn't afraid to be absurd. It also has I think arguably the best third act in recent gaming memory, maybe even longer.

Couldn't have said it better, it's been years since a video game blew me away in terms of polish and production like Death Stranding 2. It's not just the graphics (probably the best looking game ever honestly) but the craftmanship and attention to detail. I've unironically soifaced at the beautiful views several times. It's Rockstar Games tier stuff, but arguably even better because its not constrained by trying to appeal to a huge mainstream audience.

Legit gives Lawrence of Arabia style vibes with how it just makes you say "I can't believe somebody funded and made something of this scope." Like you said, for lack of a better word, it's epic.

No, that's indicative of the way Japanese narrate their stories in general - over-explaining everything to the point of tedium, making sure to get their specific point across at the cost of everything else.

I've even heard a Japanese explain that interpreting a piece of art by yourself, outside of the author's own views, is seen as disrespectful.

They're just as much bugmen as the Chinese.

This is princess beach tier shit. I don't know why Kojima thinks he's somehow above storytelling tropes and must do this ridiculous shit to distance his "la creatividad" hipster persona to distance himself from his own fucking story. What's wrong with straight up telling the fucking story you hack? What's wrong with a straight up villain? I loved Higgs as a tortured soul who was in isolation for millennia but all the stupid shit undermines that. It's a good story if told earnestly, all this unhinged Kojima shit just took me out of it and made it worse.

For me it is.
It still has flaws. Mainly that the vehicles and online features are a net negative.
The game is fantastic when you're doing deliveries on foot. Unfortunately that is not optimal and you're a fool for not optimizing your gameplay loop.
Also the game is way too easy even on Brutal difficulty.

i'm hoping Overdose is a real game and not some Until Dawn moviegame, i feel the same way about PT and the promise of Silent Hills.

DS2 to me at least proves he still has it, he mismanaged MGSV and DS1 was a borderline indie title in terms of how quickly he had to produce it, but the guy who made the MGS games is still there.

Kojima has gotten so much better at open world since MGSV though, both DS1 and DS2 absolutely mog MGSV's maps and are so much more interesting in layout and enviromental design. It also feels like he's gotten better at cutscenes and storytelling with the open world concept.

I really want to see him give the MGSV formula another go, especially since the tech in DS2 is fucking amazing and feels like Fox Engine on steroids

my biggest issue is just polish. changing weapons is janky, there's so many situational things that lock you out of the weapon wheel and instead it loads the headgear/footgear menu instead which just wastes more time. the constant slowdown/FOV changes when you enter timefall, come near a BT area, the battery of your vehicle stalling out, etc. are all obnoxious. the amount of fucking menuing is absurd, especially because each menu is its own entity so you have to wait for it to load. all this should be done on one screen.

DS2 seems to address a lot of this, looking forward to the PC port.

Everyone knew it was medic after GZ dropped and Medic's voice actor was literally just Kiefer Sutherlands but at a lower pitch and how the camera goes to great length to not show his face.

Just because you were too young to remember the theory threads doesn't mean everyone was, before GZ people thought Venom Snake was Gray Fox or Decoy Octopus, after Ground Zeroes and people saw Medic and heard his voice people knew it was him. In the Garbage trailer Kaz literally says "what about him?" in the hospital after the helicopter crash. Literally the only thing that threw some people off is that Big Boss was edited to look like Venom Snake on the motorcycle as misdirection

he said he re-wrote it multiple times, once due to the COVID scamdemic and again due to too positive reception. so it's interesting it wasn't remotely as subversive as MGS2, some people feared that and he was self-sabotaging. i hope he divulges the older versions of the story in the future. i'd also love to hear about some of the early drafts of MGSV's story where Diamond Dogs were more explicitly at war with America and not just "CIPHER" as a vague placeholder for American imperialism.

I don't know about GOTY but it definitely left its mark on gaming history. Not even implying it's because of Pekora's addition, as vtubers have been in tons of games already, but because the rest of the cast also succeeded in drawing interest from both people who played it and people who didn't alike. For a game that sold solidly, it has the mindshare of something 10x its size.

the story isn't it's strongest suit - but the DHV really felt like home and a tight knit group more than what I felt about the "Expedition" in e33. E33 still has the better storytelling true, but DS2 clears it graphically and in aesthetic. The difference is mostly in budget, I think. The UE5 look is really obvious in E33 and makes the game look generic despite it's ambitious visuals. It's visually stunning in combat though and in some cutscenes but the general exploration and overworld looks very trite.

if anons here are actually interested in the game I'd even go as far to saying just watch the DS1 cutscenes, then play 2. It's just a straight up upgrade in every department. you will definitely lose some attachment and grounding in the world if you do this, but the gameplay is just "more of the same" for a 50 hour game that you might burn out before playing 2.
that said DS1/2 is also a good game to play through slowly, it's quite chill and easy.

Itโ€™s just an awful game. Iโ€™m going to go return it today.

Itโ€™s everything wrong with modern game design except Kojima is behind it so we all give it a pass because we like Metal Gear.
Itโ€™s like if Miyamoto made a game about cardboard boxes after making Ocarina.

The combat is watered down MGSV, the story is junk, the graphics are incredible, but at that point who cares.

Played it for 40 hours, enjoyed it a lot, I like how gameplay feels better, I dont like that Australia feels a bit "flat". Played offline cause otherwise it trivalizes the game too much. Story was fine, some cool moments, but wasted potential as well. I think its one of the best games this year. I DS2 will win GOTY at Geoffs', E33 will win for journos and hipsters. But ee all know the real GOTY is Bananza

ik it's kojima's game he can do whatever he wants and he's infinitely more talented then i am but
I would've preferred a much more serious and depressive tone in both MGS and death stranding
MGS 5 shined when you were in cuba without balloons and support in a base full of soldiers or infiltrating skullface without raising the alarm
i wish they treated super natural was closer to something like metro instead of giving portal opening devices

DS shined when you were carrying your mother while music played

I enjoy my grounded games too, but wishing DS is less off the rails is a disservice to the type of game it is trying to be. It's quirky and very on-the-nose, but it has very real self-serious themes and drama (served by the best photorealistic graphics currently) and that's just how it is. The tone is thus very unique since it sometimes whiplashes from slapstick to philosophical musings to relationship melodrama - which I think can be very jarring but I enjoyed it personally.

I like judging games from the apparent game they are trying to be, rather than what I want a game to be.

It's less about DS being complex and more about "wait, how in the fuck did you made that leap" kind of a situation. Some explanations only make sense in Kojima's head, so he has to explain it to you over and over again so that you "get it".
>you see, Amelie doesn't exist, so Ami is soul in French, and Lie is a lie in English, so by combining this you get Amelie, someone who's existance is a lie, you got that? Here, let me draw it for you.
Kojima, you are not as smart as you think you are.

What if Death Stranding took more creative liberties and was less Metal Gear Solid / Kojima game.
What if it was more STALKER or Blame!.
How much more interesting and unique could it have been?
Instead of being a "safe investment".

I am sorry, but that reeks of pic related.
Not ever art piece needs to be explained entirely.
But having Nolan tell me that entropy can be reversed, to show bullets flying back into guns and explosions play in reverse,
without explaining how do those bullet holes come to be, what happens to the inverted soldiers at the end who died and what would happen if i put a non inverted claymore, next to an inverted corpse.

Thats the point Kojimbo is at, with his "art".
Throwing things at a wall and hoping some stuff sticks.
Even NGE went to those extremes with its religious themes, but at the core the story was about the hedgehog paradox.

did you miss all the girl bosses running the world? They even made a "pregnant" woman larp like she's a single mother hero without the burden of actually having a child. The game is extremely subversive

It's insane how not long after the coomer, no fap november and all that redpill manosphere stuff mocking weak males addicted to masturbation became mainstream, this literal pornography/zoophilia simulator masquerading as a fantasy game came out and npc cattle just swallowed it whole. It shows the npc has no values, it will laugh at whatever is popular and then do the exact same thing tenfold without a single sentient realization.

Yeah I have no idea what do people say when they mean these fights do not feel earned. Even in DS1 it felt cathartic and poignant.

Sam and Higgs cause each other so much pain over the course of two games that it completely blows whatever Liquid/Ocelot did to Snake out of the water.

And DS2 especially called for something more than just a fist fight.

>george miller cant act or isnt even remotely trying
>the jap girl who couldnt speak english was the worst part of ds1, then they got another ugly idol like girl who can barely speak let alone act in a major role
>said girl is generic immune cure person which is boring and stupid writing
>dollman feels like he was added just because kojima, in typical jap fashion, caught on very late to the trend of sidekicks that never shut up, rather than out of necessity
>not changing roads to be freely build anywhere and keeping them in set spota is lame
>woodkid song was good until the idol like jap girls started chanting rand numbers
>translation feels very japanese, like they didnt try to localize at all
>when norman reedus had to say more than like 3 words, his bad acting becomes apparent (ive never seen him in anything but DS but boy hes not very good when he has to speak at length)

like the firsr, all the other elements like story and gameplay are just "fine", nothinf really amazing enough to be identified ans praised really. its an ok game, which in this era of gaming makes it a relative masterpiece when you see all the other shit game devs are putting out.

i think the writing and story of both is kind of dumb. its kins of like assasaina creed for me. the story is skippable, the acting downright bad at times, but i just enjoying running through the environments while enjoying the amvience or listeninf to podcasts or other things. not high praise but has ira place

Correct, even with the unfortunate black eye it got for not having content warnings about the depictions of infant death and attempted suicide in the first chapter it's still head and shoulders above all the other slop that came out this year.

agreed on the story. the way it's presented though is amazing both in-game and in cutscenes and as usual Kojima frames shots extremely well. let us know once you are finished with the game the third act is pretty good imo.

Doing endgame deliveries now and some of these routes are insufferable. The ones where you have to climb the snowy mountain, get something, and then bring over to the other side of the mountain are so annoying. FUCK the adventurer.

Do Kojimadrones still somehow try to deny that Kojima is far left?
Or did they just become far left themselves?
