You can but it depends on the character how easy that’ll be. For example with Sol it’s easy because you can just do normals into 5H into fafnir, and use the follow up for 25 meter for more damage. On antiair you can do normals into air dp. If you went with Sol should try to learn sidewinder loops after you get a feel for him, and the same with anyone else where you learn the better stuff as you go.

I think it stems from the (incorrect) notion that you NEED to lab for hours upon hours and commit a bunch of combos to memory, and train the muscle memory to pull them off in order to even have a chance of succeeding, which is just flat out wrong.
If you are a beginner, you would benefit much, much more from learning positioning and fundamentals by... simply playing the game. And if you are an advanced player then labbing is done either for fun or for optimization, but in the case of the latter then you are not really a beginner anymore, you are someone who (ideally) enjoys the game so much you want to find out new shit about your characters and so on.

I know to a lot of people, it isn't just about needing the combos to win, but the notion of encountering somebody who does them and going, "well I'm cooked" because they no longer believe themselves on an even playing field. Talking about it makes me recount the times with normie friends growing up who would go "oh COME ON" if I pulled off a combo or stuffed something on reaction from knowledge.

It's kind of eye-opening on evaluation, that it really seems like people mainly play games intuitively, and not intellectually, where they'd keep knowledge handy, choosing instead to just "feel it out." Fighting games are hard to play like that starting out, but it is doable, and really fun once you break that barrier. To me, I think what got me past it was realizing the logic 2D fighters have for what kind of moves are performed by certain motions. A qcf or charge b, f is liable to be a fireball. An SRK or charge d, u is liable to be an anti-air. At a certain point you can just run the gamut of motions on a certain character and start finding a lot of shit without even cracking open a movelist.

I just hit Platinum in Street Fighter 6 after an 11-win streak from Gold 3 and it feels good.
I'm certainly not good yet -- I don't know my character's (Dee-jay) combos yet, largely because I REALLY suck at doing combos. The most I have are basic 3 string attacks like cr.lk cr.lp qcf-mk that I spam out whenever I think it will land.

Otherwise, I've been beating people who clearly know their characters better largely just by zoning, having my anti-air always charged, doing really annoying mix-ups with drive rush into grab/slide/jump and not pressing buttons unless they're safe (light-jabbing out of everything).
This is my first time playing online in a fighting game other than briefly trying SF3S on fightcade a couple years back (I got to C rank in that by similarly just being annoying with high/low mix-ups while knowing zero combos) so I feel really good.

Yeah, that's the plan. I think I don't have an affinity for combos, but I know that, like anything, if you keep throwing yourself at it you'll get it down, even if it takes me longer than most.

The toughest part for me isn't necessarily the idea of learning combos, It's knowing which ones are actually useful, and where to apply them, especially a character like Dee-Jay who I think feels a bit trickier than most in that respect, as fun as he is to play casually.

Strive's current patch is a mixed bag
Most low/mid tiers got good changes, some high tiers got good changes as well (eg. Nago getting nerfed without being outright killed)

They just made what certain characters are good at even better, like how Baiken's S Kabari is actually a threat if you block it now, or how Testament's Stain is a much bigger threat since it lasts longer and also makes throw convert.
This makes these matches interesting because these characters are stronger in one specific area.
