I'm currently playing it for the first time, probably 3/5 of the way through full completion. I know people here love to shit on it but in and of itself yes, it's a great game and I'm really enjoying it. Although right off the bat, it's pretty remarkable how much they reused from BotW which, although isn't a dealbreaker for me because I loved BotW, is still a valid criticism. Like...they really did reuse a LOT of shit lmao

It definitely doesn't give the first impression or leave the same impact BotW did, being a sequel and all, but most of the additions are solid. Depths are kind of depressing and I find myself never wanting to be there, but sky islands & caves are great. The new powers are useful and fun to utilize, but the ones left behind in BotW could be just as good so it's somewhat of a net neutral. The zonai devices are fun. One thing that sticks out is that I remember enjoying BotW's shrine puzzles way more. The Upheavel impact on the world map can also be an eyesore; BotW's world looked much cleaner and less cluttered with ugly crap everywhere in comparison.

In terms of which playthrough I enjoyed and will remember more, definitely BotW. But that's because I played it first and TotK is so similar. If you had two groups of people who had never played either and asked them to rate it, I wouldn't be surprised if TotK outscored it

You can't casually fly over the entire world at the price of 9 zonaite and for that reason you're forced to engage with the overworld a lot more in BotW
The set pieces and shrines are also just generally more interesting in BotW (discounting the ones that are just one fight against a robot but TotK has 1/3 of its shrines being completely empty)

If you're not literally learning how to make 3D games from first principles or making a hobby project, it shouldn't take more than 4 years to make a 3D game. Everything after that can only be the result of mismanagement or the project becoming nonviable without a total overhaul.
TotK took 12 years to make and only released BotW as a playable teaser to avoid leaving the Wii U without a new 3D Zelda.

The problem with ToTK (and BoTW) is that the scope of the world does very little to justify itself. When the devs have to spend time creating "filler" content like Koroks, Shrines, and Caves, they're putting less time into the bigger set pieces. I would rather they scrapped a lot of the filler and incorporated that content into proper dungeons (within a smaller world). The approach used by ToTK and BoTW ensures that a majority of the game is forgettable.

I love open-world games. In pretty much every game, I ignore the main quest and go do my own thing.
I also grew up playing Zelda. In fact, I loved the Link's Awakening remake.
On paper, botw and totk should be the perfect games for me, but I absolute hate both. I forced myself through 30 hours of botw thinking it would eventually click, but it never did.
How it is acceptable to have this massive world with the only "rewards" for exploration being repetitive korok seeds and copypasted shrines?
Also almost non-existing progression systems.
I simply don't understand the hype. You can't convince me this is not a clear case of "the emperror has no clothes".

Weapon durability is fine in a vacuum, but it really serves to make every action you make feel even more inconsequential in these games. There's almost no sense of progression, to a frustrating degree. You start off reasonably weak in the Plateau / Sky Island, but it doesn't take long for most environmental "puzzles" to become trivial through crafting (cooking / zonai) / brute force (health / stamina) / walking further. The combat starts off bad and never really gets better. I fucking hate the bloated enemy health pools and annoying ragdoll physics involved with weapon combos, in particular.

The story and narrative are not only the worst in the franchise, but also among the worst in gaming history. It's fucking trash.
The building gimmick gets old fast and is barely required outside of shrines or small puzzles.
The Depths are literally one of the most bland and boring areas in gaming history.
Enemy variety is still lacking, 95% of the time you'll be fighting bokoblins and their trash AI.
The game is way too easy and can be broken in a million different ways.
With the exception of the desert temple, every other temple is a joke. And the bosses are all bad too.

BotW and TotK are both overrated open-world tech demos hiding behind the Zelda name. BotW gutted everything that made Zelda feel like Zelda, and TotK just reheats the same world with slapped-on gimmicks.
Weapon durability is still trash, the story is nonexistent, the combat is incredibly shallow, dungeons are just bigger shrines with no real soul, and the bosses are lazy reskins or straight-up copy-pasted. TotK tries to feel like a sequel but ends up being a bloated mod.

I think it's unreasonable to expect everything to go perfectly straight away, especially when you're trying a whole bunch of new stuff.

But totk was incredibly annoying because it didn't improve on the previous game in any way. It was like the devs thought botw was perfect as it was! A good, even great game overall, but also a disappointment/full of missed opportunities:

1) The Depths are cool until the moment you realize it's a repetitive inversion of the overworld.
-It would have been better if the depths were unique areas, even if at only 1/10 the size.

2) The floating islands being mostly micro dungeon/puzzles/fight arenas is a boring lost opportunity.
-It would have been better if there were less of them, but all of similar size/scope as the tutorial island.

3) The building is tedious, almost entirely unneeded, and you need nearly all of the batteries in the game before it even begins to feel like the machines last long enough.
-It would have been better if the building locked to a grid like Nuts and Bolts, and if the game gave you far more battery capacity.

On a minor note, I think the dungeons were slightly worse than BotW on average. Still overall a great game in spite of the above.

Replaying it with my wife's son and it's better than I remember it being on my first playthrough. Maybe the 60fps has something to do with it or it's because he's now old enough to not need complete handholding.

I sold my switch after finishing Link's Awakening and a bunch of other games. Tried multiple times getting into nuzelda after falling for the tendie gaslight but now I see there is absolutely nothing there to warrant so much praise.

i remember reading that this was supposed to be the majoras mask of the switch generation and was planning an buying an s1 after this games release. after i read that weapons break permanently and the map is the same i completely lost interest. this also happened to me with mario kart world. fallout 4 taught me the valuable lesson of how retarded pre ordering a game is. thank you godd howard.

Totk got a single playthrough out of me but that’s it. It’s way too mediocre compared to botw which I will continue to occasionally play still. Everything about totk is lazy. My fav Zelda is MM for context.
