Leaker here: the reason why FF9 Remake was canceled was because Square Enix wants to focus on FFX remake next.
It won't be HUGE like 7r, it will closer to Crisis Core Reunion aka graphics and a few qols. At some point they considered to do the same with FFXIII too but that was canned.
They are also considering to port Tactics Advance too if the other tactics game sells

Actual Leaker here: The FFIX remake never existed, it was a mistake on Nvidia's part; the real project is just a remaster. The real remake in development is actually a remake of The Bouncer being led by the guy they poached from Capcom that made FFXVI's combat. Also The 3rd Birthday is getting a rerelease on Switch 2.

Nobody cares about FF10. Even FF7 remake is barely selling despite being their most iconic IP. The FF brand has been poisoned after two decades of massive mismanagement by hacks at SE. Everyone should be fired. Starting with board members and all the executives who've completely destroyed Square's reputation and their brand power, down to lowly animators and code monkeys. Their games look dogshit, run dogshit and play dogshit. It's an absolute disaster. Square has close to 5000 employees, and while not all of them are game devs because they do more than just games, but most are devs, and they have hundreds of devs working on their main titles for many years, costing square enix hundreds of millions, with nothing to show for it. 99% of all players want ALL of the content in one package, no exceptions.
when playing an old game, people look up which version has the most content, the best translation, what gameplay changes etc
overwhelmingly they pick the version with the most content to play, it is the highest weighted priority
it doesn't matter if it adds anything to your power or doesn't speed the game up, it should be there because I WANT IT THERE, that's it.
not only that, having all the content on a pc version makes it exponentially better for modding. not having all the content is a huge detriment
