the first game was pretty good, but by the time i finished the story i was more than bored of the gameplay. a year or so ago, i reinstalled it to play a bit, and within ten minutes i remembered why i stopped. i just do not give a shit about clearing a giant map full of Ubishit objectives and collectables. The contrast from the base game's stories and themes to the DLCs already showed the studio was taken over. Main game showed that Jin and the samurai were trying to protect the people at all cost. Base game Ghost of Tsushima has a fun gameplay loop, but it was getting old by the time I got to the top portion of the map. I wasn’t really confident in the Ike Island DLC, but that one truly blew me away with how well crafted it is, meaning that Naughty Dog learned their lesson and know the best path forward for the Ghost franchise.

What most people don't talk about enough is how Ghost of Tsushima had some fantastic morals in it.
Jin was a great protagonist who sacrificed the way he was brought up for the sake of Tsushima's people, even the Yarikawa clan that rebelled against his uncle's rule and the Iki pirates who fought and killed his father.
There is a young woman who wants to be a samurai and fight the mongols. Jin acknowledges that she isn't one, but has the same fighting spirit that must be tempered with control if she wants to be effective.
There is side quest where a man has a secret romantic relationship with another man, but his sneaking around is being construed by his paranoid survivors as him working for the mongols. Jin tells him straight up that its fine to love, but hes going to get killed if he sticks around and should just get the fuck away and keep it to himself.
Another side quest has bandits stealing important relics and heirlooms from a nearby town, but its revealed that they are doing it to keep the items safe from being destroyed. Jin convinces them to act as bodyguards for the town's villagers and for the villagers to accept them and allow them to redeem their past as bandits.

Jin makes no qualms about the harsh realities people on the island face, but manages to bring out the best in them. He is moral, despite discarding his samurai code and upbringing, and without it feeling overly woke. Even if the gameplay of GoY is many steps above GoT, it won't be nearly as good at its heart if Atsu can't live up to Jin's morals.
