It's one of the first, if not THE first, modernist novel of notoriety. Read/watch Hemmingway's speech when he accepted the Nobel prize for literature: Fitzgerald did something very new, but it's not the best, and I don't think I'd say it makes the top ten of novels written in English. It doesn't mean he's not an artistic genius for writing it. The fact that this was written 5 years after finishing This Side of Paradise, which was essentially an American Elizabethan novel, is fucking ridiculous.
I will acknowledge that he's literally who comes to mind when you say "great American novel," and there are many others I prefer to him (sorry to be a pedantic shithead).
