Hello lads, hope you're all well. 32 here.

I'm gradually working my way through Death Stranding 2 and trying to come to grips with Soulcalibur 6 after not playing fighting games since I was a teenager. For me, it's Haohmaru despite never having played SamSho because I used to like him in CvS2

Maybe you just need to give video games a kick in the head for a while. Sometimes you'll feel a bit burned out, take a few months off from them and come back feeling energized and excited about the medium again.

What kinds of things do you generally like? Might be worth reading some books.

Only die hard literal "FF7 IS MY ENTIRE LIFE AND CHILDHOOD" tards seem to say shit like this about Rebirth. Why ill never trust that its good. Nobody, not a single person has been able to describe an actual "game" that is "good". Its all about tangentials. "The music", "So much charm", "I love the character interactions", "Side quests flesh out the characters", "Minigames so fun!". And then throw in the dude who says "Duuude the combat is so much better! Why you ask? And what makes it different from Remake? Well...uhhh you can do air attacks now! And...uhhhh cool synergy attacks! How does that add depth to the combat you say? Well uh! I dont know more stuff to do = good, what are you a rollslopper!?"
Okay I embellished a bit with the strawman rollslopper insult but you get the point.

35 in a week
I'm almost done with a 130 hour playthrough of DS2 SotFS. Excellent game, but the later parts of the dlc are probably too hard for me. I'm playing solely offline due to playing a cracked copy so being carried isn't an option for me. I will have done pretty much done every single thing in the game, except:
>Old Iron King
>Old Ivory King
>Frigid Outskirts
I still got through all of Frozen Eleum Loyce and the bottom of Brume Tower (and beat that fucking Fume Knight) but I'm kind of burnt out on the game to bother getting my ass kicked with the green text above. I'm getting through Shulva/Dragon Shrine now, after that I'll probably beat the game for the first time and call it.

On the side, I'm playing Mario Galaxy 2 for the first time. It's great, but way more linear than the first, not sure how I feel about that. It reminds me of all the Yoshi platformers where there's always 5-6 points of no return, and if you blink you'll miss a collectable and have to play the level allnover again. That's a giant pain in the ass especially because I usually try to 100% all the 3D Mario games.

I cut contact with my mother this week and have been dealing with bad bouts of PTSD. On top of that, I've been trying to get sober from weed the last couple months. Playing excellent games is pretty much the only outlet I have right now of numbing all that. Happy Friday grandpas.

Frigid Outskirts is the worst part of all the DLCs. I gave up trying to beat the 2 lions at the end, only because traversing to the boss fight is so stupidly tedious. I still liked the game overall, but the DLCs are kind of a mixed bag for me.

39, I finished Expedition 33. I enjoyed the plot for the 2/3 of the game, then it was meh. Combat was annoying with all this parrying, so I cheatengined it. Music was good.

Since I bought gamepass for a month, now I'm playing Refantazio. And it is meh. The only good part are Boschesque human monsters designs. Rest is meh. Main cast is bunch of uninspiring sissies and gameplay is a boring slog. I would not recommend it.

I admit that there is something to it, but I am not convinced yet. Starting with assassination plot and god king visage in the sky was interesting plot buildup. I just wish it wasn't such a slog gamplay wise and party members were more interesting. Music is also quite good. And grotesque human monsters taken from classic painting are a very interesting and worth applauding choice.

In the last year and a half I finished:
FF7 Rebirth, Unicorn Overlord, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Yakuza 8, Monster Hunter Wilds, We Love Katanari Reroll + Royal Reverie, and Dragon's Dogma 2.
All of them were Elder God tier.
FF7 Rebirth was so good all I've been able to do after getting it's platinum is check every single day for info on Part 3.
Part 3 has all of the FF7 content I love essentially back-ended into it, so that's most likely going to be my "game of the generation" for me.
I fucking cannot wait to play that after how good Rebirth was.

I dont believe I can enjoy 8 honestly, but ive been waiting to be sold on 9, ever since a 9 defender said that it and 13 were some of the only genuinely good jrpg combat systems.

I only trust people with the intelligence to understand how well designed 13 is. Because those who hate it tend not to value gameplay nearly as much as the abstraction of gameplay i.e menuing, NPCs and minigames. Which is ironic considering 13's item system is probably overly complicated compared to its predecessors.

My only advice is to practice basics and build from there. They added like 4 new combat systems on top of the base combat system from Remake, so it has a pretty high skill ceiling this time around.
Just like older games with certain late/post-game fights you have to pay attention to how you build out materia, and enemy phases and stuff. Rebirth also has a lot of emphasis on materia combinations compared to the first game, so the more you get and the more you experiment with the more broken you become.
This is basically a non-answer but there's so much depth to the combat system that I would practically be writing out a guide to explain everything.
You can look up "Yuffie ATB Cheese" for a cheat code build if you ever need it. Aerith and Tifa are also super broken to use with the right setups.
Darkside Cloud is safer and easier to use, but a bit risky. He'll still shit on anything though.
Barret is mostly there to be a stagger machine or full blown tank support/atb battery...
It's a lot man. My hard mode run required every neuron in my brain firing at max output to beat.

To this date after I don't know how many thousands of games beaten I've never experienced a final boss fight more epic and larger than life than the original FF7's and I wonder how they plan on surpassing that in the Remake.

Also very interested on the new heavier angle on the war between Wutai and Shinra, there's also supposed to be a bigger focus on Tifa as a character too and her role on bringing Cloud back. I wish there would be a conclusion to Yuffie's story after what happened in the Intermission DLC but of-course that is all Dirge of Cerberus stuff, a game I wish didn't exist. Oh and the combat, how much better could they make it? Because from Remake to Rebirth the improvements were absolutely massive.

For combat stuff all I can think they could do is triple team attacks, and out of party assist attacks.
Materia is going to have to be running on full cylinders in the next game because we're still missing iconic Enemy Skill stuff like Beta, Trine, Aqualung...
Ultimate Materia, Mime (if they're buttfuck insane), Combo up stuff..
Then there's limit break stuff - Lv. 4 limits are going to be a thing so they'll have to revamp how we can get limit faster or distribute it around faster.
The ceiling has to go higher because this 3rd part should be getting INSANE endgame fight just on normal mode.
I DON'T even want to think about hard mode WEAPON and Sephiroth fights.
That video game is going to be INSANE.

I find pleasure in the process when it comes to modding. I abandoned projects I did in the past, but in most cases people were able to use the stuff I made so it didn't go to waste. It wasn't time wasted any more than other hobbies are that don't produce something in the end, and it was rewarding for my imagination the way I am sure shows are for others. I'm always grateful that aside of when I am anxious about money or being let go that I've kept my imagination going strong. Shit is more precious than gold, and part of the reason I hold off buying a game is "I could use that time to try and write more"

I've got Arma 4 in 2 years to look forward to and whatever total wars are coming next. Past that and I guess the star wars Xcom-y game.

43 here and I just finished 100% Chronicles of the Wolf. I think I actually like it better than SotN, although it is a close call. While I think that Lecarde Chronicles 2 was better for its unsettling atmosphere (the "random" deaths and other oddities were way creepier in that game, but Wolf has much, much better gameplay and level design). My only real complaint is that you have to spam triple jumps for the last 50% of the final area and holy that gets old fast.

I also played Zortch - it was a very quick playthrough, 5.5 hours. Generally I like Doom more than Quake, but Zortch had great movement and gunplay. I'll take a look at the sequel when it eventually comes out.

Next up is...probably just more Final Fantasy XI.

34, Fellow Rebirthbro here, I spent literally 4 months of this year pretty much just playing Rebirth, clocked in a little over 160 hours. Did every single map marker, damn near everything in the game. There's a little bit more to do if I wanted to actually 100% it but I am satisfied. It's probably the most fun I've ever had in my life playing an open world game. Was playing with mods on PC to make the game run drastically better using DLSS and Engine optimizations.

Do not be fooled by /v/, there's a huge number of people in their mid 30s and 40s who consider Rebirth one of the greatest games they ever played in their life. Pretty much entirely people who played the OG as kids and never stopped loving it.

I would say it was an incredible experience, but the pacing of the last two chapters got really strange and unfortunately muddied what was otherwise one of the best gaming experiences of my life. I am very unsure of how it will be possible to make a better game than Rebirth for the 3rd game.

After finishing Rebirth I grabbed a Switch 2 and have been playing through a bunch of the improved Switch 1 games while waiting for Bananza to drop.

I find this state of mind so incredibly bizarre to understand. You DO understand that you can just beeline through the game, right?

It's literally the most bizarre complaint about a game I've ever heard, and I've heard so many people say it. Not even specifically about Rebirth, I mean about things like Cyberpunk, Tears of the Kingdom etc. You are basically complaining that the game gave you a wealth of things to explore and sidequests to do, minigames to play and so on, and you're acting as if the game is forcing you to do everything.

Granted there is a small portion of things like minigames which are mandatory, but I don't think it's excessive at all if you're intention is just going through the story and skipping most of it. But man, I feel sorry for the people who do that, because the Protorelic quest and final fight is unironically so much more kino and worthwhile than the actual final boss fight. Even the summon fight challenges were intense as fuck on Protorelic quest.

My problem is that there's so much stuff (equipment, materia, etc.) that is locked behind map completion that it feels like I'm leaving my characters underpowered by skipping all of the Ubislop content.

My worry is that if I just choose to skip it all, I'll get to some point in the main story that requires having access to the mcguffin you get from 100 percenting all the maps, or the final fights are balanced around you getting all of that gear and levels, thus forcing me to go back and grind all of that content later (if it's not missable).

I've been burned by games like that in the past.

I was very mixed on 13-2. In a vacuum it was a fun story, with more of the combat from XIII, but only having 2 party members didn't do it for me, and the plot felt very unnecessary and contrived just to make a sequel, felt like it took away from the ending of XIII rather than added to it.

Then again I usually don't like time travel stuff so I think the premise of it would be a hard sell on me no matter what.

These are both utterly ridiculous statements. Can I just ask, did either of you play the original FFVII at all?

There was a fucking TON of optional content, it was entirely possible to beat the game without Vincent or Yuffie in your party at all. I spent tens of hours as a kid doing the chocobo races because that was how you got the golden chocobo, which would let you get Knights of the Round. You didn't have to do it, but it was cool if you did because Knights of the Round was probably the coolest summon in the game, and you got the golden chocobo which could go anywhere fast as hell. Plus there was the Emerald and Ruby weapons, you had to do a ton of Golden Saucer side quests to get Omnislash.

Seriously every time someone comes with these types of complaints towards Rebirth I have to genuinely ask, have you ever played FFVII before? Because Rebirth felt immensely loyal to the original game in the sense of giving you a massive amount of extra side content to do, that again, you completely do not have to.

To address this guy's >>715234171 concerns, no, there is no point in the main story where you """had""" to do any side content. That's the whole point of it being the main quest. Also all the boss fights are generally scaled towards the level of your characters on Dynamic difficulty. You could probably get to the final boss at the lowest level possible and still beat it because that fight is scaled towards your level. Again: you do not have to do everything or even most of everything.

And as for this guy >>715234141... dude why are you playing Final Fantasy VII? Why are you playing an open world game at all? You are literally saying the only good games are those that are linear and have little to no side content. Just go play some Sony movie game or something.

As for me, unironically Final Fantasy VII has always been the Dragon Ball Z of video games even back in 1997. That is to say, The Filler is the Best Partβ„’.

And yeah, the original did have a good amount of side content, but it didn't dump a ton of it to the world map after each new area. There wasn't 10 or so hours of side content right after Kalm, or Mythril Mines, or the boat ride, or driving by Gongaga, etc.

Going to a new area and seeing that if I want the new summons materia I have to put the Main Story on the back burner for 5-10 hours kept taking me out of the experience.

Gacha games because they're a blend of old AA JRPGs and early 2000s MMOs which are two genres that I used to love, plus all the hot sluts. I have lots of money (for now) so I don't mind buying a pack here and there, but not too often.
DbD because I always loved horror movies and games in the 80s and 90s and what other game will let me play as characters like an Alien, Chucky, or even Albert fucking Wesker against other players? Community is shit but since I main killer and don't interact with the fandom in any way it has no effect on me.

It's a game that I tried to get into 2x before but quit after maybe 2 hours due to the higher difficulty and kind of slow start, I decided this time I'd push through it and my single playthrough was 152 hours. The gameplay is harder than skyrim, it used leveled areas rather than level scaling, all new location, music, voice acting and a story that blows away anything Skyrim could do. I'd definitely recommend it. I'd put it up there with some of my favourite games. How it's a free mod I'll never know.

I think my taste in video games has changed and it makes no sense to fight against it. I cannot enjoy RPGs anymore, or pretty much anything that isn't purely focused on gameplay, I mean no (or little) cutscenes, no walls of text, no wiki reading at all, and no plot I don't care about. Then started the second game, but either I'm getting burned out or the second game just isn't as good. I don't like how the later missions in 2 start breaking the established rules just to destroy your base in a surprise attack and force you to start over. I'm still going to force myself to finish it so I can get to the third game.

30, I've never played a single Final Fantasy game, besides FFXIV a few years ago. I felt bad knowing that all of the references to the franchise were going right over my head.
I finally decided to try and play through them now, starting with FF1 (the original NES version because apparently the remakes kind of decimated the difficulty).

Boy is it grindy, unforgiving, and they don't explain a damned thing. I'm using wikis to see what the spells do (because what the heck is "Afir" or "Fast") but otherwise trying to find my own way through for the most part.

I skipped the early elder scrolls and started with skyrim. Skyrim is not a bad game, but its nothing more than that. It has no story, no redeeming qualities. Back then it had nice graphics compared to the rest of the bunch.

I still don’t really know what went wrong with Sly 4. The graphics I don't even know what happened, Sly looks like a fucking rat now, and aside from the Japan level and Rioichi himself most of it felt underwhelming.
The other ancestors didn’t feel fleshed out at all. I get that the story is about the timelines falling apart and the Coopers being erased, but that’s not exactly fun to play through. And their arcs all follow the same tired formula: β€œThank goodness you’re here, but you’re too late.”
After all the buildup across three games, It felt like I finally got to meet these legendary ancestors just in time to miss out on actually playing as them at their best.
Honestly though, I’d still play it. At the very least, they didn’t recast the main voice actors besides Carmelita, which will never not be funny. The core trio still has some great banter, and the animated cutscenes are really well done.
That said, it’s just not… good. The characters feel like tropes now. Sly’s just cocky and overconfident to an extreme instead of the quick witted thief. Murray’s not The Murray anymore he’s just the fat one. Bentley, who used to be the thoughtful strategist, now comes off as condescending and even talks behind Sly’s back. That felt really off, especially after Sly 3, where he specifically rejected being anything like Dr. M. He doesn’t need Sly or Murray, sure, but they’re his friends and the game seems to forget that.
And then Carmelita, who’s basically been reduced to β€œthe angry girlfriend.” She’s emotionally tied to Sly and doesn’t really stand on her own anymore.

It is mainly because people lump together all the open world games and think they all, in practice, all work the same.
In far cry and AC games, the side content IS the content. Usually if you do the main missions you finish the game quite quickly. In games like the witcher 3, they litter the map with "?" notifications and you dont even know what you are gotta get, but it is almost always just another camp with shitty lvl 1 enemies, or a fucking lvl 99 gryphon.
This isnt the case for FF7 rebirth.

The double tiger fight in the Frigid Outskirts is the only hard part of DS2 to solo, but I recall there being at least one summon along the way. You still have to extremely aggressive to win since your summons will die in about one minute and if you don't kill at least one tiger before your summon dies then you are going to lose. The Ancient Dragon can be tough too, but is doable if you stack all possible fire defense buffs.

Never understood why people struggled with Fume Knight. If you're good at timing your rolls then he's pretty easy.

I was in this same boat until I decided to start obsessively watching movies. Think about the amount of time you spend looking at a TV, monitor or smart phone. I bet if you transfered just a small percentage of that to watching a movie, you could probably watch a movie every day without really sacrificing anything. With all of the different films made in the last 100 years, with each different era and region from which they hail, you have certainly not seen every movie you would have liked to. Just seems like an easy hobby because all you have to do is sit there.

Turning 45, myself, in August. I'm in education. so I have a bit of time to dick around in the coming weeks before I have to start prepping for the next school year. Sunk about 100 hours into Nightreign, so that's been kind of fun. I do kind of hate how all the randos have turned it into entirely a nonstop run for the highest tier items possible only and if a single thing doesn't pan out, they DC on you. The most fun I had was back when we were all learning it and you'd open a random chest just somewhere and a random purple would spawn and it would decide your playstyle for the rest of the run. I guess I'm just old and cranky now.

Other than that, I've been doing a little BG3 with my sister on weekends, working though my backlog (I love snapping up indie horror games on sale for no good reason), and waiting on some Fall releases: Kingmakers, Hell is Us, probably not Silent Hill f, maaaybe the Painkiller remake?

Same thing happened with Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. Playing Helldivers 2 and Total Warhammer 3, the closest thing to a β€œstory” game I’ve played in the last 5 years was Oblivion.

I’m tired, lads. I want games that understand they’re games, and let me play them within an hour of starting it up. If I wanted a story I’d play in a tabletop campaign with my boys, and if I wanted mindless busywork I’d pull weeds in the garden or make firewood for fall. I had a lot of fun with ZZZ but I can only take it in 1-2 week bursts or else it becomes busywork.

>Helldivers 2

I played this with friends back when it first came out and they all dropped it, so I have no one to play with. I heard they added a ton of shit. How is it now? The performance got worse with every update back when it launched.

I don't want to make this into an FFX thread but I really enjoy the instrumentation of Yuna's theme I think it is wonderful with its harpsichord and the final xylophone leaving that childish longing...

Any comparison would be guesswork. I bought it in January just before they added the Illuminate. It’s total guesswork; sometimes it runs great, other times it feels like my connection’s held together by bits of twine. The average seems to be good, though, and the game is still flawlessly cinematic.

I’ve definitely hit the end state of the game, though. That point where the only currency that matters are Super Credits, and you only really play to enjoy the game itself. With that in mind, it’s fantastic. Helldivers 2 has an awesome end state, though I’m finally going to cave and be a good goy with a $20 SC purchase. I’ve already internalized it as being my way to secure the next 4 Warbonds, and that paying $60 for a game I’ve already put 400hrs into is a damn good deal, especially since I’ve bought full-price games I’ve beaten in less than 12 hours (looking at you, Doom Eternal.)

39yo, currently playing e33. Last month my wife and I were shopping on main street and decided to stop into the retro underground game store, I haven't been inside a game store for over a decade. They were having a smash tournament. She complained that it stunk inside, but besides that I was thrown off by how many mtf trannies were there. I swear it's like the neckbeards from back in the day traded in their fedoras for ill fitting dresses. Just a bunch of fat disgusting dudes pretending to be woman. I'll stick to playing video games either single player or with my kids.

lets see this year I've played and finished Wukong, metaphor, Doom Dark Ages, Avowed, last of us 1, Blades of Fire, FFXVI, Oblivion remastered, MH Wilds.

Dropped list:
POE2(dropped but I did play a lot), Rise of Ronin(dropped but I did play a lot), dragon quest 11(dropped but I did play a lot)

Games which I still play in between other games: WH3, MTGA, AOW4 and a bunch of other stuff.

Games that I've stopped playing for now either because I'm burned out and basically have seen all there is to see(marvel rivals) and because I dislike the new region and its aesthetics(genshin) medieval fantasy>over this weird ass setting.

As for games that I'm planning to play, maybe I'll finally get into Helldivers 2 since I've been putting it off for so long now. I have a HoMM itch regardless of how Olden Era turns out but sadly early access has been postponed. Ah and also maybe I'll check out first berserker finally, endless legend 2 is also on the horizon so will grab that as well, that's about it when it comes to games.

I'm wasting time on Mario Kart World with /v/tards these days.

Before that, I played each of the Xenoblade titles at least 10 times each.

Now I'm just waiting for the graphics updates to come out.

I think I could play FF7: Stillbirth, but I thought the first one was really bad. The first one was the first new game I played for a while. Big mistake on my part.

33. Me and the buddy both had the week off so we put 30ish hours into Satisfactory. He tends to build quick and dirty and I plan better for operating at scale, so it synergizes well. Other than that I picked up a dozen random cheap games in the steam sale so I'm chipping my way through those. Sadly Creepy Castle, Elephantasy, and Copy Kitty all weren't quite what I'm after.
