All that'll happen is games that require online will have a sentence on the store page stating "This game is guaranteed to remain fully functional and accessible until at least [date]". Games won't be required to be kept functioning indefinitely since it's not plausible.

Like, aside from squeezing more money out of people, what's really stopping publishers from putting out offline-versions of previously online-only games. Even if you can't access online multiplayer, people already have work-arounds that let them play local multiplayer through 3rd-party online servers. Plus, a game being offline means it doesn't have any DRM chugging down the performance, which is pretty good if you want to do local tournaments. Hell, it's even good on the publisher's side, since having a game be offline means that they don't have to spend money on keeping the servers up themselves. A lot of publishers don't realize that they can sell old and new games at the same time for more money. I know SOME publishers do, that's why there's been an uptick in collections lately. But this mostly towards recent online-only games that can easily be converted into offline games. They don't even have to be great games, there are people out there who still want to play games like Rumbleverse and Multiversus despite their middling demises.
