I definitely think you could do more with Rare DK, but I also get why Nintendo saw limitations crop up. While he's mostly looked fine in his own games, he's had some rough moments too in some of his Mario spin-off appearances.

Im not a big fan of the new DK or anything, but using smash trailers, which are the absolute highest fidelity shit Nintendo has to offer in both personality and presentation is absurdly unfair as a compare point. These trailers give a vast majority of these characters their best look by far. If you want to make a more fair point you need to use examples within his series.

I think the mouth is the weirdest part of the old DK design. You got some shots where he has teeth and some where he doesn't. Even in the image his tongue appears to be two completely different sizes between the bottom left and bottom right images, whether that's because of the lack of teeth or not I'm not sure, but it's weird for him to flip flop between teeth and no teeth.
