It looks to me like they just retconned Cranky Kong's thing, made the DKC games happen way before the Mario games, and now the original arcade game happens after the DKC games. Look, to be fair hear, it was more Gasslighting on Tanabe's part, than mental gymnastic. He was the one who brought that shit up to justify his "creative decissions", and for a while, it hunt us all. On retrospective, it was probably just a marketing move for some games being developed at the time, to get back to basics after the success of New Super Mario Bros, not a log time mandate, just a "quick reintroduction" for new fans, not meant to go beyond a few games. Tanabe was who took it to heart, and when asking about it, came with the excuses about it, that most of us bought, because game development is slow, and all the evidence to call out his BS was still in the works.

No matter how you look at it SOMETHING is getting retconned. And nintendo clearly doesn't cares what, Pauline was only added as a child when they realize "oh, we could have a sining buddy on DK's shoulder" early on development (right after discarding her from the game at first). On the long run, as to whatever is the "final canon" my money is on whatever they put more buget. The Arcade Game and any refference to them, are quicly becoming little more than an easter egg by now.
