They look the way they do because they were drawn with exertion and effort in the top image, and were drawn with shortcuts and corners literally cut in the bottom image.

Well, lets try reverse engineering the answer. The top one has soul, while the bottom doesn't. what are the diffrences? The top is muddier looking, and is in a non-standard style of drawing when it was made. The characters are also seemingly drawn into the background with the lighting effecting everything correctly. It has more detail

Ow the bottom, Very clean looking, The style is also unlike a modern anime style as well. The characters are seemingly on another layer from the background. The lighting is seemingly non-existent except for cast shadows. It has less detail.

If I had to guess, soul is effort more so than say nostalgia, or just liking one over the other. The top one is harder to draw and create so we tend to appreciate it more over the bottom one that is seemingly much cheaper made and looking.

Even if the artstyle changes, there's some traces of soul on it. Still frames don't always make things justice.

Original series was also designed with limited animation in mind, while the alola one is much more "animated" with more dynamic keyframes.
They had to simplify the overall design a bit and add less detail to each specific frame when they're going to be doing so many more unique keys for every episode compared to the limited animation in the original.

Always seems odd to me when anons on here compare animated shows with still images and exclusively argue about how detailed the frame is rather than how good the animation of the show is. Both have their place and can result in very good shows, but it just seems silly to act like the newer show is objectively worse because as a still image it doesn't look as detailed when in motion its doing a hell of a lot more than the old one ever was.

Limited animation has more detail on each keyframe, but a lot of scenes boil down to still images with flapping mouths on them. Looks better as a still image or a screenshot, but there's less actual animation going on.

Its simply two different approaches to anime/cartoons, neither is inherently better than the other, but its silly to compare them with a screenshot and say "wow look at how much animation has fallen..."

From a time when many people worked on passion projects, or there was at least a baseline of skill and/ or creativity. It was before social causes, lowest common denominator focus groups became the exclusive demographic. There may have been budget constraints, but the people on any project made the most of it anyway, and the aforementioned passion, skill, and/ or creativity was enough to carry through.

The art style was honestly lifted from Ralph Bakshi 's: The new Adventures of Might Mouse, which debuted in 1987. Pup Named Scooby Doo came out in 1988. But yeah, it also follows the 1980's trend of turning all their characters into kids/ babies. I think Muppet Babies started that trend. In any case, I still really liked A Pup named Scooby Doo.

Here's a quick rundown:

"Soul" doesn't mean "pretty". It means "charm". "Charm" is not the biggest and the coolest and "the best", but it has artistic merit because it makes its limitations part of the art.

There's something to be said about Castlevania looking cool, but Castlevania is not "charm". Castlevania is the most lifelike depiction of something that could be managed with specific limitations.

I wouldn't say Super Mario is "charm" either. It's what happens when the idea of moving graphics is a novelty.

I'd look at Fez or Super Meat Boy if you want an example of graphical limitations being used as a point of novelty without just looking at a game that's old and was forced to.

FEZ is in a similar boat, because it's effectively a brand new kind of engine and the world gets imagined with voxels.

Super Meat Boy is heavily inspired by old graphics, but it doesn't really rip anything off. It's basically a passion project for the guy that made it that grew up on extremely difficult NES games and the graphics kind of just formed around it. The animations are a Newgrounds esque cartoon and the game is pixelated like an NES game.

Digital art got nothing to do with soulless shit on the bottom part, despite all these retards in this thread. Notice flat light on the bottom, sleek like a chinese toy color aesthetic. You need to keep in mind that scenes like this take away time and manpower from other scenes, the more shit they have to do like this, the more scenes with almost no animation or reused animation end up being used to fill time and pad shit out.
I'm not against higher detail animation, but the major benefit of lower detail designs is that you can have higher quality animation more often rather than just in major battle sequences in one or two episodes a season.

Again, there are pros and cons to both styles, but you're basically asking for every episode to have movie quality animation which would be cool in theory but would also be prohibitively expensive like 99% of the time.
