Eh, Disney did pretty well in their task. I'd even argue that Star Wars was never really a good or interesting universe under the hood. It has been massively carried by the original Trilogy coming out at the right time and its unique array of species and technology do the heavy lifting.

At the core, Star Wars is fairly infantile, on-the-nose, cartoonish, really. The politics and conflict range from non-existent to extremely simplistic. Nothing is really complex, outcomes are pretty much generic and expected. I think one of the reasons Andor did so well is because it offered a glimpse into what Star Wars could be when infused with actual writing, dialogue and complexity. The main reason Star Wars has gone to shit is because it's at its core a male adventure fantasy but the IP has been hijacked by women who tried artifically forcing it to a female audience.

Boys are the one who swing sticks in the playground pretending to be knights. They're the ones dreaming of faraway adventures in which they save the princess and defeat the evil threat. It's a thing buried deep in their pysche and formed by evolution. Star Wars is one of those IPs that have suceeded in harnessing this fantasy for its benefit by combining it with some fantasy/scifi elements.

Kathleen Kennedy and her Disney ilk tried to bruteforce Star Wars into being a girl thing. Girls didn't care because most girls aren't SW nerds, and the rare girls that are SW nerds understand on some level it only works when it's for boys. So most boys stopped caring about it, most girls didn't start caring about it. The 80s-2010s had a large demographic of young boys who cared about Star Wars, 2010s to now there aren't any because the IP has refused to market itself to them.

This is why Outlaws failed, apart from being Ubishit (the name itself is marketing poison). Trying desperately to be SW for girls but it doesn't work and never will. It's also why on the flipside the new Jedi games succeeded, even though they're derivative and uninspired they're a very clear SW fantasy for boys.

Because it's a financially awful decision. Games/shows/movies are not utility software that you can just aim at different target - they’re creative works. A blatant disregard for the audience that built your IP by liking that creative work, just to chase a different demographic whose interest in the IP you're unsure of? It will never make sense as a business strategy. It's a risky attempt to chase short term again, at the cost of 99% likelihood of long term disaster.

You can succesfully release maybe one game like this before the nerds realize you're discarding them in order to chase other wallets. Then they will spend years online telling everyone to stay away from any future games you make. And people WILL stay away, future games will flop, the IP will feel tainted, and half your studio will get fired. Plenty of examples of this in the last decade.

You can avoid this by sticking to your core demographic and making what the original fans like. This way you can release 20 games/movies and you will enjoy steady but not extremely high profits from all of them. Or you can abandon your core demographic and shutter your studio after 1 success and 4 subsequent flops, just because you listened to a retarded HR analyst who told you completely altering your game in order to chase the ""modern audience"" is the key to infinite money.
