Undertale is alright. The gameplay is genuinely quite good but you'll spend most of your playtime in dialogue. The genocide route is unironically more fun because there's way less text and you get to enjoy the combat system way more before getting the two super bosses which are the peak of the gameplay. Deltarune is great, the combat is significantly improved, you can fight the super bosses on either route, and combat makes up a much larger part of the game. Plus I think the story and characters are way better so far as well.

And the game does it with many small things that add up to a worthwhile experience. Like the random encounters with "nobody came", the oppressive music, the kill count, the vastly altered story elements and interactions, the grinding itself. Plus two great boss fights, where the difficulty fits into the narrative. Probably the best executed "evil" route in any game I've ever played. It's a great statement on evil routes in games in general, that actually gets to the core reason why people even play through them. The hack showed that /jp/'s mod team's views on Touhou are purely antagonistic. At worst, they wish it was gone. At best, they'll let ANYTHING slide so long as it drives traffic for the board up.
This has led to a semi exodus to a variety of more welcoming, better moderated alt chans, although you never quite leave 4chan, or at the very least imageboards.

The last interesting 2hu game was Th17, and that was...8 years ago. The games just aren't very good and have been the exact same game with different assets for more than a decade. Which means that since the game itself isn't good, the reason people get into 2hu is the fanbase, the fanworks and doujin content.
The problem with Touhou is the community, which is composed of either giga zoomers that just found the pile of doujin content, like an old treasure trove and are mesmerized by it, or by the most autistic, mentally retarded faggots and trannies known to mankind, that have been obsessing over the same autistic series for like 20 years. The former are annnoying for obvious reasons but they will get better, but talking with the latter is utterly mentally exhausting. Unironically torture. Like that general of autists that keep invading 2hu threads on /v/.
Undertale had nothing to do with it. It just showed another dev putting in effort to deliver a good product instead of recycling the same game for over 20 years, and you can talk about the game freely since it's both good and the community is young and vibrant. In 20 years, if you tried to talk about it, you'll get the same autistic subhumans that right now compose a good chunk of the 2hu fanbase.

I don't think it killed it but his stance about it is dumb as shit. Touhou is notoriously badly drawn but it has always been praised for having a lot of "SOVL", that being, that even if you are not good enough at something like drawing, you can put your game out there that plays to your strengths and people will find those defects charming. If you just turn to AI to turn those weaknesses into generic sloppa, a product like 2hu as we know it would have never come to exist.

The biggest issue with Touhou compared to Undertale or Deltarune is that ZUN can't write a likeable character to save his life. Imagine doing a genocide run in a Touhou game. Not only would it be impossible to care about pretty much anybody you kill outside of, like, Kogasa. It would also be morally the correct thing to do since pretty much all Youkai are inherently sociopathic monsters. Meanwhile the monsters of Undertale, even at their worst, are largely decent people.
