There's nothing wrong with having the protagonists teaming up. The problem is XC3's execution. They wanted the game to be accessible to newfags, as such they did completely shy away from the other entries for pretty much all of XC3's run, to the detriment of XC3 itself. Either you go all in, or you don't, you don't half-ass it to catter to newfags that think it's a good idea to start an iterative series by entry number 3. Especially when Monolith went out of their way to make sure the ENTIRE series is on the same console. You don't shy away from it, you go all in. Another gripe I have with the series is that they keep doing all the worldbuilding in games like 3 and X, where it's cool to see side characters and areas develop in the side quests, and then they flush it all away. Mira was building up into something special with each new Xeno race added from the sidequests, and then the planet just goes poof. It's especially insulting when they didn't even bother to change Elma's last affinity quest. Now if you do it by the actual order, it doesn't make sense. Elma's quest has you fighting two level 80 sphinx, whereas 13's last boss is level 60. Then her quest ends with a sort of "We're ready for the chapter of Mira" vibe, and chapter 13 tarnishes that completely. It's like the writers of 13 didn't even play X. They could've at least rebalanced Elma's affinity quest to be more in line. Hell, I would've made it a requirement before chapter was accessible.

3 has some moments that high incredibly highly, but it doesn't have the masterful pacing of 2, or the consistency of 2. It's like, you know how 1 had an incredibly start but meandered in the middle and only really caught up again at the end? 3 is like that, but the dropoff in the middle is a lot sharper because the world isn't as interesting as 1's when you've got the reveals.

It's fun to play, the cast is pretty good, it's got great mechanics and it's fun to tool around in. Honestly, I would have liked it a lot more if I hadn't been such a completionist. Imo, it's a game where you'll ruin the experience for yourself by 100%ing it, doing all the quests, getting to lv100, all that stuff. Do the quests that interest you and beat the main story. Do not worry about doing everything, don't put your heart and soul into it. Do that and you'll have a great time.

And after 3 you can play FR which is absolutely phenomenal anyway.

The combat really takes its sweet time to open up, mind you. If you've played XC1, you should know where it is going (all Xenoblade games share obvious core elements, adding new systems or going either vertical or horizontal with each new installment).
As a piece of advice, do the story as much as possible, don't try to do sidequesting (or don't do much) until you've finished chapter 3. After chapter 3, you'll have unlocked pretty much all of the battle mechanics, it will make exploration better. And acquiring those mechanics as soon as possible is also better.
I can find those handy copy pastas with nice battle tips if you want.

The combat is definitely one of my favourite parts of it. Pay attention to the tutorials, it's a clever system that just keeps building on itself more and more as it goes.

It'll keep giving you more and more pieces and they each build on one another in a virtuous cycle, so that every bit you do correctly leads into exponentially more damage with each subsequent step. It's incredibly satisfying.

The only bit that's confusing (at least for me) is when the game talks about "Cancelling", it means cancelling the animation, the damage still goes through, you just link one attack to the next and it skips the recovery animations. When I was first playing and it was talking about cancelling arts, I thought I'd be losing damage by doing so, no, it's all positive.

Other than that: For the skill tree, take the "Start the battle with B/X/Y" skills active ones, and the "Cancel Arts into other Arts" ones first. Those are your biggest priorities and they should honestly have been available from the start instead of needing to invest into them. They each make the game far, far more fun.

Some of the details like Origin having been a thing since X’s first draft stand out to me. Makes me think 3’s story was more developed during 2’s writing phase than we might have thought if the repurposing was this extensive.

I do strongly feel that they need to pivot a little bit after wrapping everything up. They are rapidly approaching Xenosaga levels of complexity that I don’t think will benefit the series unless there is a change in their overall game design and writing philosophy.
