i kind of wish the focus was purely on the bombs, the fact that you have to get the walls/blanks correct on rows that have nothing to do with redirecting explosions makes this game feel less like it's own thing and more blatantly like picross with one minor gimmick. though to be fair i'm still not that far in
Is the guy from the last thread who got filtered by God Hand still around? I really want to know what particular part of the game buck broke him so hard he genuinely believes anyone who plays the game above level 2 is cheating, let alone beats it on hard mode.

you should be able to start walling off the slimes from there. also remember that the number on the bomb needs to correlate to the amount it kills; your 2 on the upper-right is killing 5 demons

That means that if the bomb kills the enemy on column 6 there is no way to block the explosion from getting to column 8 where the crystal is. Hence the bomb must not be the one that kills that enemy and therefore there must be a wall in row 8 between columns 3 and 5.

>>716110304Okay, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks.
>>716109745No, I think I can argue that the definition of "bombs" isn't clear here.
Is a bomb always defined as merely the object in a pre-exploded state? Is a bomb any less a bomb while it's exploding?
I believed the explosion was considered part of the bomb, that explosions shouldn't cross, and I believe there's no real logical reason not to - IRL an exploding bomb would be the same chemical components as an unexploded bomb, just in a reactive as opposed to an inert state.
There is no rule IRL that dictates this is the *wrong* way to think, and arriving at Matthew's solution for the puzzle seems to be predicated on correctly assuming or guessing how he's defining things.
>>716110216To be more specific, a zone is defined as any number of Xs surrounded by walls or by walls and the edges of the level.
That means a 3x3 of walls with a hole inside counts as a zone, a 2x2 of walls on the corner of the level with the corner space being a hole also counts as a zone.
HOWEVER, it is not a valid zone and therefore will not allow you to complete the level. In order for a zone to be valid it MUST have only one crystal and at least one monster (and by extension, a bomb to kill said monster).

There is nothing in the previous puzzles to indicate explosions crossing paths, even though they explode in sequence, would not count as "bombs hitting each other" by the game's logic.
Every previous puzzle actually goes out of its way to ensure that the paths of explosions do not cross, so you can't know how "hitting other bombs" is fully defined until this puzzle
I'm not complaining, I think *this* is what the game really is, and I like it
But it's not a logic puzzle to guess what the rules are: a puzzle establishes everything the player needs to solve it from the start, and asks the player to solve
This is a game about figuring out, with your intuition, what the rules are, and *then* solving
Looking at more complex puzzles in the thread I believe I'm right about this.
>>716112443No, say you drop a bomb in real life and it creates a linear explosion.
You're told you must drop another bomb and it must "not hit the other bomb"
How would you interpret this?
I say there are multiple ways to interpret this, and without clarification, there is no correct answer.
To add to this
>>716113082The puzzle itself is the clarification of the unstated full rule.
>>716112623even on the gb he could've mapped select to a circle marker, the only use select currently has ingame is showing the credits on the level select

this is probably going to be my GOTY personally. one of the best puzzle games ever made with an excellent difficulty curve

I'm trying to not sit in front of my gaming/work PC during my summer vacation.
so maybe I'm just very tired and missing something obvious, but what is the specific strategy for figuring out what goes where? (other than just trial and error).

>>716082409I just looked at the rows and columns and guessed on this one, keeping in mind you need to make 3 partitions. I have no idea how you actually justify the wall placement, unlike the other puzzles that can be attacked step by step, this one was sorta all-or-nothing.
I like how quickly it launches and exits. I wish there was an undo button but that's probably against the spirit of every move being justified.
>>716114359I just got to this one. I figure that it needs to start like this but I'm not entirely sure how to continue from here without guessing.
There a trick I'm missing? I'm going to assume that it'll end up being symmetrical. Catboxing my sketch because the site isn't letting me upload the image.

>>716114782Since the center point of the three diamonds is 1/1, you have to have a wall there, it's the only way to separate the three of them. If you put the wall anywhere else in that column/row, you create a 1 + 2 partition which you can't further separate because you have no more walls.

>>716082409>>716085729On the 6th row, there is only 1 location for the wall that would separate all three groups. From there it's easy enough to figure out what you need to do one wall at a time.

>>716133938>For some reason he didn't mark the ? columns with a + sign, so this fails as a tutorial. It's literally the other way around. The question marks are not included in the total, so there is no + sign.

Also are the games by the GMTK guy any good? I don't watch him because his analyses are incredibly surface level.
>>716134887Only in the sense that you could manually add the numbers to reach the same information, yes. But the information itself is useful to solve the puzzle.
>>716135082>Is that guy even making a game?Until a couple of years ago, he was making a zelda-clone alongside two other people (a coder, and an artist). It was playable to some extent, because he mentioned once that one of his son played it for a bit. But I don't know what happened to the project. After the guy divorced and started dating one of his viewer I stopped watching him.
>>716055470 (OP)I thought he was making a 2d action game? What happened to that?
>>716135308Ah well, the very next puzzle teaches you the idea properly.
Do the question marks in a puzzle all have the same hidden number or can they be different numbers? I assume it's the latter, but some puzzles seem unreasonably hard then

>>716141894You made a zone that doesn't contain a diamond.
>>716141978>>716142475man, I feel like the shit with the zones should have been better explained. I get that matt wants some eureka-moments where you figure out some emergent or not-explicit rules, but there is a not insignificant amount of initial guess work to do when it comes to the basic rules of his logical deduction-based game
This game really has me doing systems of equations.

>>716142862Probably yeah. The two things that I don't like about the game is that the zone closure rules are hard to grasp and that the hardest part even in early puzzles is figuring out where the first move is supposed to be.
