I'm actually betting that is exactly what it was. The whole thing that people meme about with 'Roaring Fraud' seems to be intended as Kris trying to get the zombified thing he still thinks of as his old freind to play ball and just knock the three of them down and go back to the original plan, while slowly realizing that it is fucking with them on purpose, and eventually coming to the conclusion that the only way to end the fight safely is to do it himself.

Thus why Kris literally backstabbing the other members of the Shit Squad in that fight will only have some branching dialog during the Reveal Scene instead of a full storypath where Susie just quits the party entirely or becomes the primary Vessel or something like that.

I can get behind your point. I think the assumption most people make is that Kris was able, for whatever reason, to make sure that his attacks would only incapacitate Susie and Ralsei. This also aligns with the typical stance on Ralsei's behavior in Ch4 under Kris slash theory
Also keep in mind that Kris' lack of reaction to his friends being downed is strange here regardless of who made the attack; why wouldn't the Kris who turned pale from his friends dying in the game react to the Knight striking down his friends? because regardless of who the attacker was he knew his friends would be getting back up
