Holy is a mcguffin, meaning that it'll do what the story needs it to do which is appear to be a solution to a problem but said solution can either totally disregard saving humanity or even straight up be antagonistic towards it due to the vague nature of its function being to "protect the planet". The in-game explanation is that Holy was delayed too long from activating so it might not be able to stop Meteor but if its goal is to "protect the planet" then that could also mean that allowing Meteor to destroy Midgar (the primary area using mako energy which is essentially causing the planet to die quicker) would be a "two birds with one stone" situation.

FF7 is an old game and it was something you had to play before the internet got huge because Aerith's death is the most iconic scene in the entire game so knowing about it ruins the gameplay on some level. Same with Cloud and the whole big reveal with what really happened when his town went up into flames. My theory is SE is going to treat us well for the final part. We'll get an ending for the current timeline, things will wrap up in a similar manner to the original game except for an added event at the end that will reset the timeline and will make us play the game once again with the progression of the og game (no parts, everything more linear and connected like the og) where things will shift and we'll save Aerith, and the other dead characters. That's why I feel that Expedition 33, for example, is a very terrible story in the long run. The characters serve the narrative and thus there is nothing of substance TO these characters to get us invested. The investment is in the mystery of the story, that's it. They bait and switch in Act 1 where the only character growth ends with that character getting an unearned Aerith treatment.

I haven't kept up with theories in over a year. What are the current best/most-likely theories on all the major story events by the end of Rebirth? Multiple (dying?) worlds? Zack? Aerith is alive/dead? Retarded orange rift in the sky that Cloud can now see but no one else?

Also what's the materia that Cloud put into his Buster Sword, and why did it absorb into it rather than placing it in one of the visible materia slots. I'm assuming it was the Black Materia, but why does Cloud have it now as opposed to Sephiroth (who is suppose to have it at this point)?

Also, I'm assuming like 99% of Ever Crisis isn't cannon, or is it?

This is actually answered in-game, although it is simultaneously stupid in its own right. Sephiroth creates some radar detection energy barrier so the WEAPONs don't register him, so they go to kill humans because they're huge faggots as well. Like I said earlier; the game's script is just a bunch of schlock to get from setpiece to setpiece. It's no different from Transformers in how lowbrow it is.

This would have been an incredible ending shot if she really did just die and that was it instead of already fighting Sephiroth after she died and having paragraphs of dialog.
