AB has goated level design, polish, and player feedback. The free update challenge levels are still getting added a year after release, and they all kick ass. That said, you kinda can't do shit in AB except jump, float, and one designated powerup move at a time. As someone who loves AB and can't afford a shitch2 (yet), DKB looks like it might dethrone it for me.

I just finished the game like 10 minutes ago. I bought a switch 2 for this game and god damn am I glad I did. Just pure good game. The trailers made me think the story was going to be a bigger part of the game, but it never feels like its intruding on the experience. I'll eneter a level and just start monkeying around and stumble into the place I was "supposed" to be going unintentionally. Just superb level design. The finale was fucking kino too.

Lower the system resolution to 720p. Not kidding, digital foundry just did framerate tests on games with unlocked framerates. Docked only, though. Bananza benefits from the higher framerate, it's not a locked 60, but it's definitely better.

They were originally gonna kill off k rool too but saw the back lash and stitched him in at the last second, which is why the transition looks so poor. Odyssey's is just a natural conclusion of the whole gimmick. It's all about possessing enemies, so at the end you possess Bowser. It's not that crazy. Odyssey doesn't end with "AND THEN KING K. ROOL SHOWS UP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 20 YEARS AND KILLS THE MAIN BAD GUY AND ALL THE GENERIC ENEMIES WERE ACTUALLY KREMLINGS AND K. It's interesting how the basic kernel of this game is in Odyssey. That cooking level where you smash the cheese blocks and the ending of the game where you punch through walls with Bowser (even while scaling walls the same as DK) feels like the same basic idea. Like somebody on the team saw what they'd done and went "we can make a sick ass game out of that".

I felt the same way but the level design is actually a lot more curated than it may seem from trailers. There are some bananas in the game that you can just brute force your way to but the devs came up with a lot of creative obstacles that prevent you from just mashing Y to win.

Smashing shit is fun.
The movement mechanics feel just as if not even better than odyssey, there’s a fair bit of nuance and if you get gud you can do crazy skips and stuff. I bet speedruns of this game will be fun to watch.
The level design is solid and is more than just a sandbox for the terrain destruction (usually).
I think this game beats the shit out of most of Mario’s recent output desu.
