The playerbase already segregates itself heavily between those who raid and those that freeze up in fear if they have to tank a duty roulette and the former take painstaking measures to keep their exclusive club as small as possible by hiding resources that could be used to learn advanced job mechanics, current content relevant gearing guides and cutting edge strategies behind discord cult memberships and role-restricted server channels. I mean it is a strategy and I can see what Yoshida is doing here, trying to balance out the game's audience not being reliant on only the MSQ, but 6 expansions in it might be too late to pivot into making FF14 known for it's fun gameplay for casuals. They can try but I would bet against the game if I had to put money on this.
My solution would be to fix the story AND this new strategy, so you please the audience who cared about the story while nudging them towards retention for the game in casual gameplay.

Different games, they attracted different audiences and the players wanted different things.
Gameplay elements and microtransactions are a different beast to an audience who are invested for narrative and story.
Story enjoyers are not necessarily going to play a game solely for gameplay with no story, they want to get invested in a game world, in characters, in lore e.t.c. they might do gameplay content if it compliments the story, for example I loved Pand raid because to me it was complimentary to EW's MSQ and felt like an Epilogue, I did BA because I wanted more lore on Krile, her Grandfather and the students of Baldesion.
Story is a strong motivator for a Casual player to push them into content they would ordinarily have no interest in doing, so it matters a lot more than people think it does.

It's interesting because I actually felt like, despite the expansion being shit, the boss fights this time in the base expansion were genuinely great. Valigarmanda for example was fun and dynamic, requiring you to pay attention to more than just floor circles without being overly hard.

I don't really understand what happened because this expansion was the first time I really felt like content was reaching a good balance between hardcore and casual.

It's not a big deal in other MMOs, but XIV raids have been mostly solo boss oriented, with any add phases being trivial and lasting 30 seconds at most. M6S's add phase is about 2 and a half minutes long with multiple types of adds with different mechanics that walled people for days because it was a type of encounter the community hadn't seen since Heavensward.

Actually more stoked for the new patch than expected. Figured it'd be kind of a sleeper patch. And sure it's not the biggest content drop, but the new thing they're trying (+ deep dungeons being more approachable in random groups) and challenge log additions and all that are all very neat.

The problem is unless you're playing at the beginning of a patch when all the content is new, all of the good players have statics or are in PFs that require you to have finished the fight before to actually join.
Those who decide to try out a fight mid patch have to get lucky or are screwed unless they join a static that's willing to carry (even if you're not actually looking to be carried) someone through the fight.

It's basically as streamlined as can be now and is as much an action RPG as 14 is. You do a tutorial zone then choose an expansion zone to power level to cap with before engaging with the current expac stuff. Learning parties past the beginning of the patch are full of people who either suck or are in the same boat as you, and while it can be fun to learn a fight if everyone's the same skill level, but that's rarely the case. Mechanically, we don't get to do anything even remotely close to an RPG other than choosing the job we are currently playing.
This has always been the case with the game, except were actually different back then compared to now.
If Mounts had actual properties such as being able to traverse specific types of terrains or some of them being able to be used in dungeons specifically or only some being able to fly. The mounts are an RPG mechanic. But they don't, so they aren't.
Even if I were to say that you can weave in RP(the hobby) with this game, I'd still say that only outfits serves this purpose because we don't have sandbox that allows us to visually use the tools we have.

People are over the stale content cycle, same ShB-era fight design, and jobs feeling like glorified glamour at this point, it's why most of the people quitting are what I'd consider the old guard (ARR/HW-era players, soon to become SB players). These players are by far the most vocal of the community as they're truly, deeply passionate for the game, which is part of the reason why the doom-posting surrounding Dawntrail has gone on for so long (and will likely continue).

XIV's problems are systemic, they've been systemic since the very beginning of ARR, and we're finally seeing the results of almost a decade of negligence as everything comes to a head. They have one chance to really revitalize the game before what is currently a trickle turns into a bloodbath and it's basically hinging on the job rework and whether they change up the content they're offering from launch to the end of next expansion. If they manage to stick one and not the other, the trickling will continue, but they'll likely be saved from a total bloodbath.

They said multiple times before DT released that the graphical overhaul would come in stages with the first one being focused on player characters, recurring NPCs, general textures that are used everywhere in the game and lighting. You're right, and I do expect them to do more to all the zones except maybe the ARR ones.
But I don't think they're going to fundamentally change much on the geometry level to make it nearly as detailed as in the screenshot I posted.
They'll mostly just apply uprezzed textures of that which already existed over the old models, change the shaders, etc. With Island Sanctuary, we saw that they can do really good mountains, and the first boss arena in San D'oria also shows as much. But I don't expect them to go back and add that kind of stuff to, say, Heavensward zones. The zones will be updated, yes, but I figure it's within reason.

In theory, Quantum could be one of the most interesting pieces of content in the entire game, it could cater to anyone who's even remotely itnerested in endgame combat (so most of the players)
