Gacha games took the audience from FF14 in JP, they're playing Genshin and Nikke, along with Azur lane and Wuthering Waves, Zenless Zone Zero and Honkai along with a bunch of others.
The point is, FF14 is very outdated and because it's refused to change it's also meant it's refused to capture a new audience, to retain a new audience that it might be able to engage as people are so fed up with how long the patch cycle is.

FF14 failed to interest people with Dawntrail when the new big character for the expansion, the face of the expansion is a Beast man.
