If you're like me, it'll be kind of fun for awhile but you'll drop it before you ever beat the base game.

Then you'll possibly see something showing that the game's story actually gets interesting in the expansions years later, and pick it back up and find "oh, this DOES actually go somewhere good and isn't complete shit".

I'm kind of shocked they haven't revamped the base campaign even more than they have so far. It filters out a shti ton of people.

Game that is as wide as a lake but deep as a puddle. As a new player you will have a ton of optional content to the point where it is pretty daunting at level 15, but it has been years since any of it received any meaningful updates. You can play as any role in a party now that AI companions exist so you don't even have to wait as DPS to go do stuff minus a few story requirements. Unfortunately, SE is also filled with extreme retards so a lot of the classes and jobs feel like shit to play for many many hours until you finally have a decent kit. Do not pay money for this game until you do everything you want to do as a F2P.

It's a game that assumes it's your first MMO, and as a result of the passage of time (+10 levels every expansion, new abilities to add) removes some stuff from the front end to avoid clogging up at the back end. In short: it's a slow starting game. Story-wise, too. Has a lot of stuff to do, though. And given that the trial gives you access to the base game and the first two expansions and most of its side content for free, it's not a bad deal.
You'll have to see if you like the game.

If you like a well-crafted story with interesting characters who grow on you, I think you'll have a good time. It DOES take a while to ramp-up though. You start the game as just some no-name moron who got put into a situation, so you aren't given a lot of "good stuff" story-wise until I'd say around level 20ish. By then a lot of the characters have dropped their guard around you and you become just another part of the team and whatnot, so you get to learn more about them, the world your in, etc.

There are some legitimately funny as fuck parts, some melodramatic parts, some parts that are akin to "The Red Wedding" from Game of Thrones in terms of shock value and such. Some twists, some turns, some twists that any person should see coming a mile away.

It's got a lot to offer the player as far as the Main Story Questline is concerned.

Insofar as the players themselves, most are pretty cool, but the obnoxiously loud players and such do get to be grating at times. I, personally, almost always never paid them any mind, but your mileage may vary.

It is as big an issue for the JP console base as the MSQ is for Casuals.

On that note, don't join an FC based in Kugane. Teleporting away from there can be expensive for new players
Next when you find a job you like stick with it throughout at least ARR, don't try to level up all the jobs simultaneously.

A story that starts off very slow, ramps up to some amazing highs, and falls into a big low in the most recent expansion. I might suggest doing the free trial up through the first few expansions if you haven't already bought the game / paid for it. If you have I think its too late technically unless you use another account. But then you'd have to go through it again on your paid account or buy the expansion again on that one.
On the plus side, the latest expansion is essentially an entirely new story arch, so you'll get a complete, and genuinely very good story experience finishing the one before it.
Also great OSTs through and through.
Gameplay wise, its pretty fun, but the early combat is a bit dull. Much more enjoyable at higher level / end game stuff once you have all your abilities, but I guess thats typical of MMOs. Most of the complaints people have about jobs/combat are things you will not encounter yourself until end game (job homogenization or the two minute 2rotation/burst windows) and then you can make your own decisions.
You'll encounter an annoyingly high amount of these groups >>717285169 unless you find yourself a nice group to play with in advance.

Despite its faults, I think it is still very much worth playing. For the story up through Endwalker, and for the raid content well its all pretty good through out even Dawntrail.

I hated Thavnair so fucking much both as a zone and as an addition to the lore of the game. Back in SB given the embassy, I thought we were going to get some sort of not-Dutch sort of nation + if you look at the Thavnair named clothing items they don't look like they'd come out of curry land. Did they neuter the aggro mechanics in this game? I remember 12 years ago you used to have to try harder to keep aggro and some dickhead DPS could easily steal aggro if the tank is under geared or wasn’t doing his rotation properly. Now it seems like you can keep aggro by auto attacking as long as your tank stance is on.
