I only played 1-3 and 1 and 2 were fantastic, and 3 I never got to really sink my teeth into.

1 is just about the perfect length for a "grindy" game, but 2 gives you more objectives to work towards in every way and has like double the content. A straight up just a direct good sequel if you're still wanting more.
Beat 3 a long time ago and honestly kinda forgettable, and after 100%'ing 2 I can absolutely say that any game afterward is going to suffer from content bloat, just based on intuition. Im kind of neglecting to start 4 because of that idea, just based on the cheevos alone.

I'll never forgive 5 for fucking up the Item World that hard, the series never recovered from that "grind fast" mentality

Her Evility is utterly cracked.
You DO have to teach her proper spells, but that's pretty quick.
She gets a stacking 10% stat boost every time she tops a character off while healing. You can shuffle equipment on otherwise dead turns, to get characters missing a few points of HP, then heal them, grabbing 20, 30%. Once she's sitting on like +120% or higher, she's just stronger than anything else on the map, in her bad stats. You can also build to deliberately supercharge her, grab +50, 60, 70 per turn, but you honestly don't even need to.
Even without this, much like in Disgaea 1, she's a very, very competent caster, who swings at the level of Mages and Skulls, while having other utility and applications with her uniques, while also being much more durable. That alone would make her the best unique in DD2, and put her in the running.
But once she starts ramping her stats, she's absolutely ridiculous, and can carry you through a few of the post-game maps just off her end of story stats, and ramp you into late postgame. Much like Desco, she kinda falls off at that point, into just being any other filler unit, but, the entire main game and a good chunk of post-game is PROBABLY the biggest hot streak of any story character, and she effortlessly clowns on everything in the main story to a degree nobody else does.

Usalia is good for postgame, and late story, but she's pretty mediocre during most of the game. She relies heavily on the global follow up attacks to be good.
Her skills aren't great until her 3x3, her Overload is good but not fantastic until you start cranking her stats to actually kill everything on the map, or get the follow ups. She's good as a magichange weapon, but that's usually as the extra material to steal her evilities, not even for her own magichange.

Like, big picture she's great, assuming the route hasn't changed she's used in the Kill Baal% speedrun for a reason, but you have to work through a pretty long period of mediocrity for the story, most of her real value is heavily backloaded, compared to either Desco or Flonne, which completely crush the game until, and a bit into postgame.

It's not fair that she's not real.
I want a Flonne to bum around my house, enjoy her hobbies, and spread positivity everywhere.

I never saw anything particularly standout about him.
His base evility is kind of a dead slot, but does feed into him being mostly a disposable paralysis missile with his Overload. Alma Ice Scupture is interesting in theory, but in practice, it kinda doesn't do much. I honestly forget if it even works on Baal.
His stats have potential as a project, but he comes so late, and can't be brought into NG+ cycles, so he doesn't really do anything all that interesting, since he's recruited past the point where base stats and aptitudes matter. He's not getting any extra % to his stats from anywhere, and doesn't really have any other standout features.
He's not unusable or anything, he just... kinda doesn't do anything. If he came a bit earlier, he'd be a good platform to pull into postgame, since his flat aptitudes and in-house access to Violence would make him an adaptable unit who can fit into just about any plan for postgame progression, but... he's not there for postgame progression. He's there after postgame has progressed. He's not the end-all training project like Zetta, he's not a good budget option to get stats early like Red Magnus, he has no unique quirk to his moves or base evilities like the generic Armor Knight, he doesn't even really have an Overload that justifies and carries everything else like Zeroken or Petta.
He's not even a monster to grind levels or classes quickly.
He's... kinda just a guy.

The old PS2-era NIS has long been dead obviously but that's natural, time moves on and employees come and go (and we all know that NIS had some fiascos with not paying their staff around D4). Disgaea as a series will continue to exist as long as they're not bankrupt though, they pretty much have to make it it to stay afloat. As long as Harada and Sato stay on art and music then I'm good. I actually did enjoy 7 overall though.

Their output has slowed pretty immensely over the last few years, and the strange, much smaller, indie scale projects have taken up a large portion of their output. These games aren't bad, but, they're definitely a contraction of what they're capable of
They lost the writer to the Witch games, for reasons that were shitty on their end. Regardless of if you think those were well written or not, abuse of the creative talent is never a good sign for a developer like this
I don't know what's going on with them an Tenpei either. He didn't do most of Disgaea 7's soundtrack, but has done stuff after like the new Phantom Brave. Could be nothing, but, doesn't bode well.
Their writing has clearly gone downhill, witch games aside. Their narratives started getting weak after Disgaea 4, and have only gotten worse over time. Disgaea 7 was better than 6, but not by much. I do not like the average Disgaea/NIS character anymore. There are still Disgaea characters I like, but the average of good ones to bad ones have shifted. Besides Marona & Ash, the only new character from the new Phantom Brave I even sorta liked was Rouen. Mayfair wasn't intolerable. I think I liked Navy, but there is a solid chance that was just me liking Patrick Sietz' pirate voice again. The rest I disliked or ignored, and they ruined Sulphur by making him talk.
Their below average optimization and coding skill is coming back to bite them now that they're doing models.

They have kinda stagnated over the last decade. I want to believe it's possible they recover, but they're only barely keeping pace. At this point, it's only gonna take one real misfortune to knock them out of the game, like Nintendo delisting their games because too sexy, or some shit. Things always could turn, but I don't see it. Maybe they suddenly understand modeling, and Disgaea 8 is gorgeous, and they suddenly get better at writing. It's possible. Charm SHOULD be interpreted as something like corruption or degeneracy. High Charm makes most monsters target you less, because the monsters want to stay the fuck away from the creep, while the handful that don't and invert the stat are either "heroic", and want to save the rest of your party from them, or are "masochistic", and want your degenerate unit to violate them so get close.

The monsters willingly attack the heavily armored people, because they're too scared to approach the other, more degenerate members of your party.
Beyond the terrible loss of flavor, it's annoying that the translation obfuscates the function of the stat, and makes it more confusing which enemies invert priority for attacks. And obscure what your Theatrical Star is doing to the rest of your party. No. The cute shota is not being corrupted by the party of onee-sans you put around him. He is the corruption. He knows what he's doing.

Like, they fuckin, understood something I think has been forgotten over the years. Etna's entire personality is a front. She's really sensitive and caring, and that attention to it was, honestly, I think the last, and best time we've ever gotten to see, of the mask cracking, and her just whole-heartedly doing something loving. That for everything she outwardly shows, she really, really does love Flonne, and wants to see her safe.

I've still mostly enjoyed the games enough to finish the story and to mess around with some of the Post Game, but the first three were the only ones I actually went and tried to do pretty much everything in terms of bosses and Item/Chara World stuff. I mean, I've been playing since the very first Disgaea released on PS2. I wouldn't say it's what the series is "supposed to be about", the high level cap is simply one of the quirks it's known for. It's not too bad.
Gameplay-wise it's decent. Better in some ways than the original, worse in a few others. I say net positive, building characters feels more like Disgaea 7, and planning builds is fun. The loss of true freedom for building weapons is the biggest downside, I think. Weapon equip% cannot change from the base weapon, and each weapon has an assortment of skill types it can use, without any ability to change these. Clubbing people with bread, or impaling people on a phonograph is out.
The story is... hit or miss. They do a really good job with Marona and Ash, it does feel like they did them justice. Everyone else kinda sucks, and they follow the pattern of "you recruit everyone in sequence, then do their growth chapter in sequence" that feels kinda bleh. They fucking butcher Sulphur. I was excited for him to come back, they make him talk, give him shitty Saturday morning cartoon lines, and completely diffuse the kinda enigmatic tension and respect I had for Sulphur as a villain. They do a lot of setup for pirate shit, and the theming is kept through the game, but, you never really. Y'know. Do pirate shit.
When I played there was a memory leak that would make the game crash every couple maps, solved by just returning to title between maps, but, that is tedious. It may have been fixed, I just always return to title between maps by instinct now.
DLC is super, duper not worth it, unless you love Sprout or Walnut a disproportionate amount. I love Sprout a disproportionate amount, so it was worth it to me, but everything else kinda sucked. Go listen to the Mad Rat OST on youtube and you'll get the best part of the DLC for free.

Soul Nomad is really good, but the gameplay and map design is a little undercooked.
The depth of mechanics kinda aren't there, if you're not someone who has that sort of intrinsic interest in organizing your dudes, and planning squads.
The story is good. I think it drags a bit in the middle, and has a couple characters that just kinda fuck off halfway through that you keep using, but its good. The story is really just a preamble, though. You need to know the story, before you appreciate breaking it over your knee and watching it crumble, with your Demon Path playthrough.
