I made one the other dfay and it got lots of progress posting, at least on the first 150 posts or so. It's summer, so things might be going slower for many because of that.

Demos are a double edged sword, nintendo held off on releasing one for star fox zero because they knew they had a stinker on their hands, it was only after it bombed that they released one, and after playing it it made me not even want to pirate the full game, on the other hand, the Haste demo made me pirate the full game

The rotary component is the same for both the minigun and the revolver, but the revolver cylinder chambers hold grenades for the lower barrel. Think like an M32A1. The linkages feed from the ammo drum at the back-top (the "bottom of the handle" if you picture it like an upside down revolver) like on an M61.

>Are fewer people trying to become indies?

The gold rush really seems to be in it's final days, market is so flooded now with flops that maybe people are re-evaluating what they're doing. You go to plebbit and see just how many games are in the works and then compare to your own and think how is my game any different? Also the wave of people who lost their tech jobs and thought they would make the next lethal company with a few months of work are probably burnt out already.

I'm rethinking whether I should continue with VR development, I really don't have the time to put out assets with the amount of detail that I would like to have for VR and it seems like PC VR is dead anyways.

Game code is like an onion. there's layers of "how many times per second this thing is running".
Stuff that runs only once or once per frame you don't need to optimize like a madman, but you should make it as readable as possible.
Stuff that runs a thousand times per frame you start to worry about optimization.
Stuff that runs a million times per frame you should consider shoving on the GPU somehow.

Yeah regarding the no other income, there is almost literally no worse choice to make money when you have none than gamedev right now - either indie or professional. Maybe photography is worse, but you would legit be better to just get a job in a grocery store and you'd probably make more there in a week than you would in a lifetime of gamedev

Out of probability? yeah, for sure. Releasing a game is kinda like playing the lottery: you might won big time, but you probably won't. That's why I think it's best to just do it for fun and make something you really love or want to play. The industry is already full of greedy companies that only look for the money, and it would be sad if the same happened to indie devs.

Exactly. If you're rolling the dice anyway, might as well at least enjoy the game you’re making while you’re likely not getting paid. Chasing trends just turns you into a poor man's version of a worse game. At least if you make your weird little passion project, you get the satisfaction of making something you care about-even if only 5 people play it. And those 5 might love it way more than 5,000 who barely noticed your soulless roguelite deckbuilder farming sim.

My only gripe with this is how the back of the gun's slide, where the hammer is supposed to strike, is just a slab blank stretched texture. Hell, even the gun's slide doesn't look like it would recoil upon firing.
I know it's stylized art, but had to point this out. Even CS1.6 from 1999 had a texture at the back of the slide and a moving slide.

Yeah that's obviously the case but at least finish up that side of the gun because it's awful to look at.

By the way, I can't texture for shit either, but generally how is one supposed to texture items like say guns, cars, plants, furniture...etc?

As far as I'm aware the usual method is using photos of stuff, making them seamless, then placing them onto where they're needed on the model. Like plants would use the green smooth texture of stems, photos of leaves stretched onto a leaf UV map, and furniture would be straight-up seamless textures of wood, plastic...etc.
How about guns or cars then? That's much harder to pull off.
Anonymous No.716437419
>>716437086
Depends a lot on how detailed your model is and if you have normal maps or not. With a high fidelity model you can basically slap pbr materials on it and it will look right. With lower fidelity you need to paint the detail in the textures which can be achieved in various ways. With guns it's common to use pictures of the real things to texture them. You could do the same for cars in theory. Requires some image editing of course.

GameMaker can't depth sort for shit, so I have to sort vertices in the model itself, and Blender doesn't really let you do that reliably. If I don't do that, the non-opaque parts would overwrite anything behind them. This workflow sucks, but so far the result looks nice with additive blending.

There's only like 50 "cool gamers" compared to 50 billion midwits. They're not exactly an audience you can sustain off. That's why most indie games appeal to the midwits. Devs want to eat too.

No, he>>716440859 is right because despite the huge number of games to play, most of them are appallingly bland(including some popular games) if not outright bad. Just make something unique and appealing and you'll get your due sooner(with marketing) or later(without marketing). The problem is that the most creative people(those who struggle with the puer aeterna) have difficulty finishing projects, therefore, most games are made by less creative people with proper work ethic, hence why most games nowadays are so drab and uninspiring.

Ah, yes, the classic "good game will always sell", where "good" always turns into "marketable" if you do a bit of inquiring. The market has changed, the competition is tighter, the bar is higher and there are fewer things people will put up with, because they have so many alternatives, many of them catered to their individual tastes. A good game isn't enough, it has to be amazing.

Slap a camera in the scene, place some csg blocks to have something to look at, attach a script to the camera and then look up how to get keyboard inputs and then translate the camera to inputs. Best way to learn is to download a simple example project template and reverse engineer it. And read the documentation for basic node types in the engine.

Keeping a thread around constantly and reposting it as soon as it dies, instead of letting it appear occasionally and organically, especially when you repost it with the same OP, same image, etc., effectively makes it a "general thread." And general threads attract people who aren't interested in discussing the thread topic alone but rather in socializing with a specific community for the sake of socializing, and it attracts schizos. The socializers/schizos proceed to drag the quality of the thread down with attentionwhoring and schizoposting and eventually everyone who would contribute good material avoids the threads.

It happened to /agdg/ on /vg/, then it happened to /gedg/ on /g/, and it's also happened to game dev threads on /v/ due to posting them TOO FUCKING OFTEN.

I still need to make the main menu, character select, saving, the collection log, and starting / ending runs, but I have all the groundwork for that laid out already in the relevant gameplay scripts, I just need to plug it all in essentially, so code wise i just need to lock in for a weekend and i'll get most of that in.
It still feels very weird getting to a point where most of the code at least for pure gameplay and systems is done and it's a lot of tweaking, making sprites, and thinking of the actual content that needs to be made.

No, the whole point is to outline exactly what will be in the game. They're meant to add clarity to vague notions(i.e. if you want collectibles in your game, a gdd will force you to specifiy exactly what that entails as opposed to it being some vague and nebulous idea in your head). Working with proper design documents from the beginning will help him cultivate a sense of scope control and allow him to develop a better sense of how long a project will take.

Tiny is fine. Like I said above, it's a skill. One that's really useful for both scope control and forcing one to enunciate what the main hook/appeal of their game is intended to be from the start.

Godot is a trap. You start off and it's so easy! You've got a really customizable character controller, a little test room, you've got some animations in and some sounds, it's feeling like a real game!

Then you realize the navigation server is broken shit. Performance tanks as soon as you have 5 enemies. Light leaks through everything, you can't use modular level pieces or bake lighting without bugs. You start to add animations and realize how buggy and broken the animation tree system is.

Even if you overcome all of this, you need to start making levels and building content... Godot has no method for building levels or setting up an asset zoo. You have to either make your levels in blender or buy an addon which isn't going to be up to date, or manually drag every single level asset into the game and watch as the seams between modular pieces flicker and bug out (as they have for 2 years).

Godot is not a serious game engine for 3D, the very most basic elements of a game engine (tooling to create games) are not present. It's sad because it's really fun to use... but it's just got a long way to go.

Speaking of fonts, where do you guys get your fonts from? Dafont and 1001 have some stuff, but they often times feel like they're skirting legality. Like fonts that are clearly cloning some games look being marked "100% free to use" and shit. Windows fonts are also weird, their website makes it sound like they aren't legal for commercial use, but then devs use them all the time.

not really venting. I also need to commit at least an hour a day to this.
