Once you reach that point where you kinda just subconsciously accept that that's not your lot in life, you can spend less time worrying about trying to do that and more time focusing on the shit you want to do, whether it's your hobbies or any other thing that will bring you self-fulfillment. If you mean having a pet, I found it helps some in coping through the years. It is, at the end of the day, a living being that depends on you for survival.
