I remember seeing my friend in middle school do this effortlessly and he had another loose psp disc that he swapped. To this day I'm not sure if I dreamed that.

I think the PSP is the coolest handheld of all time and UMDs are the coolest game medium of all time. It is still a handheld with an old LCD screen, so hardly the best platform to play games on, but there are some games I will play on mine as opposed to PC/console. Unfortunately, my 1000 model needs to have the disc drive repaired, so I currently need to play on my 3000. The original is so much better. Feels solid in the hands and has a spring loaded disc tray.
Just replayed this game for the first time in like 15 years. My opinions haven't changed. One of the best looking games of all time. The sprites, 3d models, textures, UI elements are all 10/10 perfect. But damn this game pisses me off. And act 4 is a godawful waste of time. Just "kill the boss" scenarios where said bosses rushes directly at you on turn 1 to die.
I really like playing the FF3 3d remake ("DS") on PSP. It is better than the DS version and retains the superior UI that is lost on PC and replaced with an ugly phone UI.
Growlanser Wayfarer of Time is another great RPG.

I have maybe three cases and the rest of the disks loose in a perfectly sized tuna can.
Also, go play Spiderman 3. It's baisically PS2's Spider-Man 2, but with a new story. Spiderman 2 on PSP is also fun, although it is mission-based and has baisic swinging-on-nothing.

PSP games are dirt cheap for obvious reasons, but I still think about buyfagging them because their presentation tends to be so nice.

Get your head out of the sand. Theres so many good retro-handhelds out that are far more versitile and portable than the PSP. PSP had a lot of issues with dead pixels. Dealing with exploits and tricks to get the system to play roms is too much to deal with when I can get a Anbernic that is just load up any system and play. Also the PSP lacks ergonomic support. It can only play 90s games and PSP games. You have to get specific PSX eboots insead of the raw ISO.
PSP sucks ass in 2025 when you have so many better alternatives.

Nintendo surely did more portable stuff but you can play all of those in the PSP with just a memory stick. You could argue the MS was the worst part of the PSP.

Anything more powerful is either way larger or stuff like the Vita or the 3DS that while cool are not in the same league.

I loved the PSP and DS. Both of them were fantastic and the best thing was they offered totally different games from each other. What a based time for games that was. I remember hacking the PSPs of all my younger siblings so they could play the games they wanted to play. I would buy games and then rip them myself and then put them on memory sticks for my siblings. The PSP is one of the greatest consoles ever made.
It's like a PS2 Jr.

Undead Knights is an underrated gem.
It's like Dynasty Warriors but you have to manage an army of undead and use the right blend of personal attacks and horde attacks, while making sure you make more zombies as you fight.
The US version has the better soundtrack, which is comprised of 2 independent metal bands instead of a lazy midi orchestra.
You will either love it or hate it. It's one of those games.

Cool system. A little less interesting these days because so many of its better games are just junior variants of games you could play on a console instead (the fighting games in particular are guilty of this). The multimedia aspect was pretty impressive for 2005. With CFW it was an excellent emulation/retro device for the time too, especially since it had native PSX support.

The library is great if you're trapped on an island with a PSP, but somewhat underwhelming otherwise.

The single analog stick on the PSP is really bad and Sony's method to connect a PS3 controller, the cradle, a massive rip off, but I'm pretty sure the PPSSPP team never heard that some games supported the second stick on it. It was interesting as an early emulation handheld. You had to get (or modify) a special "pandora" battery for it, then put homebrew on it. The build quality of the device was great, they really hold up and you can still buy a PSP in "like new" condition. It was good to play PS1/N64 games on. Annoying that it used a propriety SD card, so you had to have an SD converter to put games on it. Most of the games for it were just lame versions of existing console games. Twisted Metal Head on was alright. I'd wager it has a strong cult following because the device itself is so sleek and appealing, it doesn't feel cheap and was a lot of people's first gameboy. The UMD's were so incredibly cheap and flimsy. It never felt good sliding a UMD into the tray. For some reason there was a library of movies for the device, which is great for collectors but nobody used it to watch movies. For kids it probably would have been awesome to have at the time. I got one for free and ended up just turning it into an emulation device for experimentation rather than actually using it.

With ps1 games, you can burn a dollar store CD and have your game play on original hardware. The main problem with that is slow loading times because the PS is very efficient with a certain kind of low storage CD that doesnt exist anymore.
But also, the reason we dont get that many releases for these consoles is because there are not that many people making homebrew games for them, specially bif titles that would justify a physical release.
And let's not talk about PS2 homebrew development because I think it's barely existent as of right now

He's not wrong though. Having owned both a PSP and an Anbernic, the Anbernic is superior (depending on if you splurged for one with good build quality, because they offer a lot of cheap shit). On an Anbernic (or similar high quality emulation handheld) you simply load games onto a microSD card and it just works. With PSP you have to go through all the steps of modding it yourself and if you mess up you can brick your device. My specific emulation handheld feels even less cheap than the PSP because it's made out of metal. I'd say that if you're buying an emulation device in 2025, the Anbernics and other similar devices are better if you're willing to pay a little more for a good one, but the PSP is superior to the lower end ones. The PSP itself is like a mid range emulation device, capable of playing PS1/N64 games easily. Although if you're not buying it as an emulation device supposedly there are a lot of good games on there which you could just emulate on another device.

The ergonomics for one. Chinkhelds up until 2022 weren't even able to run PS1 at full speed, and to this day they aren't able to handle PSP at full speed either. And unless you buy your PSP from a retro online store, it should run you less than 50 burgers, them soitroid and shitbernic handhelds cost $150-ish. You can also modify a PSP with a larger battery that btfos any chinkheld's. It's also technically a media player, you have to convert all your animus beforehand, but you can indeed watch them on this thing. And with a plugin you can listen to your music while you're grinding in monhun or something.

For a handheld that came out in iirc 2006, it's still amazing.

Not him, but there's a distinct difference in design dogma between portable systems and handheld systems, in both the games and the hardware itself. The only handheld systems that exist nowadays is stuff like the Playdate, 1.8s w/ Homebrew, and I'd be willing to count Pico-8 Handhelds. For the most part, it's just like what you said: the market is erased by phones

It's weird, because I get it for games like Crossy Road or Poinpy, but then you see people doing full emulated games solely on the touchscreen. I just don't get it, especially considering that so many controllers are bluetooth compatible, and wraparound controllers are really cheap these days. The thing with bluetooth controllers these days is that they come in all kinds of sizes. There's telescopic ones that wrap around your phone and collapse down to the size of your wallet, and there's normal ones that are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. They're all pretty cheap as well. Makes it so you can pretty much play real games with real inputs any time you'd be able to dick around on your phone.

I forget the name of it, but there's this design that gathered a bit of interest a while ago that actually used the magnetic ring you find on the back of a lot of phone cases, and would clip onto that to have a feel closer to old clamshell designs (or rather, slide-out keyboards, but you get it)

I don't know of one really good PSP game despite having a modded one for years now, there's a lot of good PS2 games on the PSP, but not any PSP games that I know of. Meanwhile I got an R4 cart last year, and I've been having a blast playing all sorts of obscure games on it. Even stuff that'd you think is shovelware can be really fun. Like the port of Force Unleashed 2 or the CoD ports. They're actually really good, the former being better than the actual Force Unleashed 2 on 360. I also really enjoyed this game called Solatorobo.

If the PSP has games like those I'd certainly love to hear about them though. I'll never say no to good games.
