I tried this years later and it was pretty bad to me

I guess maybe since Oracles games did it 'better' inmo. But the thing that got me was the combat was so bad. Like it was basically 'button mash to swing sword without any timing and you're good bro'

Some of the bosses aren't bad but it had some of the worst amount of empty spaces coupled with Link's incredibly slow movement

Was Zelda 1 even that puzzle-heavy? I guess it was trying to figure out secrets and how to get to places in the overworld, but dungeons didn’t really get puzzlelike until… Link’s Awakening, I guess? Ocarina of Time really took it to the next step but Z1 and ALTTP were more like mazes where you tried finding all the keys.

Skyward Sword was the only 3D game that did get a "proper" rerelease on the Switch with prominence, and that was intentional as a means to make BotW and the upcoming TotK look better as the style of the series going forward, by making SS (the most divisive 3D game) the only non-emulated representative of traditional Zelda on the Switch.

Minish Cap is infinitely more tedious and I don't remember the dungeons being any better than ALttP's. Maybe it more puzzle focused and in-line with what 3D Zelda was doing at the time, but that's it.

I've never quite understood what people see in subsequent 2D Zelda games to put them over ALTTP. ALTTP is clearly better than all of them to me in every way that matters, and I say that loving LA. The Oracle games and The Minish Cap are merely decent in comparison.

It's a great game but it would be a better game if it had a unique map. It borrows far too much from ALTTP. The art direction being kind of bland in the same way modern Kirby, NSMB, and DKCR/TF are doesn't help either. I quite strongly remember people writing the game off as New! ALTTP's dungeons, overworld, artstyle, controls, pacing, combat, bossfights, all absolutely top notch. Bona fide classic in every sense.

There's no other Zelda 2D or 3D that can stand shoulder to shoulder with it. It runs circles around everything else on the SNES and makes it look effortless while doing it. It's got that magic to it, it's lightning in a botte.

I'm a zoomer who played Ocarina of Time fairly recently on a GameCube collectors edition disk I got, and no Ocarina of Time is way better than Then BotW and TotK, it it aged just as well as any of the nes games - which btw I will never understand the hate that Links Adventure gets, that game is fire. It's easily on par with Castlevania 1 and 2
