It starts a bit slow and gives somewhat of a bad impression making you think the rest of the game is full of these fake MMO fetch quests but keep playing at least to the first dungeon because the area that comes after is has much better quests and it keeps getting better and better.
The early game just suffers from having been developed early. Not that it's all bad but it's made me quit once as well thinking the game wasn't for me and it ended up being one of favorite indies.
I want the next game now

Ato's still an oddly memorable one for me. It's the only Metroidvania I've replayed multiple times. It's nothing special, but it made me nostalgic for older games that didn't try really hard to be cinematic, but still cared to tell a story fo some kind, no matter how simple.

Being honest, it's good, but it's not mindblowing. It's a full blown 40 hour action RPG in a setting where people are playing an MMO, so side quests aren't very deep nor help much in worldbuilding, leaving the main story to do the heavy lifting in making you give a shit about what's going on. If you can tolerate that, and enjoy puzzle heavy dungeons (and don't care for them being secretly timed), you might come away from it satisfied. I don't 100% games very often, but I did it for crosscode if that makes any difference.

There's a few flaws with it imo but overall I loved it. I backed the indoegogo the moment I played it.
The loot and crafting is atrocious but you don't really need it to complete the story.
The armor designs are mostly lame.
Enemy variants and encounter design could be more varied but it isn't bad.
I never played the dlc so i can't speak for that.

Are you too poor to buy that slop on the interweb that will suck your wallet dry just for a 3/10 video game? It's just $10,000!
As it happens, I am not too poor to buy a $10,000 video game, I'm pretty well off, but also I'm asking the question of why I should buy a $10,000 video game. With tips. And why should I do so. It's not that much of an inconvenience, it's just $10,000 with tips, but why should i

I loved crosscode but god DAMN the story and writing were fucking horrible. It was so safe and tongue in cheek the whole time about "lol it's a game within a game teehee :)." They should have just not included dialogue, because it actively made things worse. Don't even get me started on the characters.
That said, the art, gameplay, zones, and music were all really good. I just hated the writing. Hopefully the new game gets it right

nta but I share the sentiment. Hopefully their new game will be better by letting it have some actual worldbuilding. For all of crosscode's surface level worldbuilding, I was into the characters just enough to care during the kidnapping segment. I even felt for the final boss, they did good in making him have a simple motivation of just wanting to have one last hurrah. The DLC throws that in the trash but let's not get into that.

Emphasis on "some".
I remember someone posting a list of all the sidequests and sorting them by types and that's how you notice the MMO type quests are heavily frontloaded, the further you are in the game the less there are. I think the only recurring one is the survey from the scientist dude.
Skipping all sidequests means missing out on a good half of the bosses, a lot of fun stories, and pretty much all the minigames.

If you have completionist OCD or if you hate puzzles you should be warned though, the game has more things to find than you probably will be able to all on your own, and the dungeons have mandatory puzzle portions, some of which can get surprisingly tricky at times. Both of which are common complaints about the game. Personally I didn't mind either though.
As for the positives, the combat is very enjoyable and snappy and based around the premise that each enemy has a weak point you can (but don't have to) exploit, story is good enough with some characters I really liked and others didn't particularly care for, OST is god tier, every quest line is unique, and exploration is rewarded well. Overall, it ended up being one of my favorite games ever.
DLC content included I took almost 100 hours playing this game according to Steam. Probably closer to 80 or 90 hours with downtime included. I tried finding all the chests I could find (did not find all) and I did all the quests and challenges in the game. I recommend it.

Symphony of War is really good. Can look cheap, story isn't its strong point either (though starts pretty good).
It's really not much like Fire Emblem, aside from being turn-based. You create entire squads out of varied units. Unit composition and their positioning matter. Units can also be customized to a certain degree. You get a couple of named characters with their own stories, they often work as super units and leaders for squads. The rest of your units will be mercenaries, there are a lot of named mercenaries with their own unique abilities.

I just tried out Suit for Hire and it's actually a pretty fun game. Sure it's a little janky in places but it's clear that the devs are fans of John Wick movies and wanted to make their dream John Wick game. Gunning down a bunch of dudes with style is pretty fun and it doesn't try to be anything "deep" or artistic, you're just a guy in a suit murdering dudes

I will help you out a little bit. The game's a little slow up until the Vermillion Wasteland arc begins. The Ice dungeon is serviceable for what it is and the Fire dungeon (as well the part that follows it) are kinda cheeks, but that's because the story hasn't begun properly at that point.

When I first tried it felt like classes had barely anything to look forward to. If I play a "build your own party" RPG I expect them to at least match what FFT had, not the whole 4 spells my black mage could look forward to. I played just the opposite, deciding that either a run was a hit or a miss by sector 3 depending on load out. Even a glass canon with the right tools is a winner, and surviving long enough to defeat the final boss, even by a second, as long as they blow up before you do.
Play with what you have, even the ship and crew make a difference. Once beat on normal with nothing but mk 1 lasers. They charged so fast thanks to a trained crew that I could cycle just under four salvos per one enemy salvo on their boss ship (making other encounters trivial).
I actually like bombs and boarding. A really great combo with anything with piercing or flame. And if you want to train your crew, you can learn to trap an enemy crew while crippling their ship, and just let the game run for a while. Under the right circumstances, you pilot, shields, engineer, and guns can all be trained to max before you even leave sector 1 (I advise waiting until 3 to be sure you have a solid build)
As for how I'd remove randomness, that would take a couple of pages, but there are some fundamentals that I would adjust to give every run at lease SOME thread of hope.

depends on what you mean by expand. There isn't nearly as much fluff nor sheer quantity of options as something like FFT/FF4 but in exchange just about everything has a useful purpose. Most classes usually hit different power spikes depending on how you skill them, but in general you don't see the huge swings until you start sub-classing. For example warlock has no charge time and double spell. You give it a subclass like BM and it instantly pumps out damage like crazy until it runs out of mp, which you have to navigate with supporting teammates or equipment. It's about figuring out what's useful in the now while keeping in mind what combos will take it over the top later

The combat and movement are just one issue. The dev listed a number of reasons why the game failed to engage players, like:
>big confusing areas with no map
>lots of sidequests with no quest log
>loads of NPCs with lots of speaking lines about everything and nothing
>Atai town being a major slog with how many hoops you need to jump through to get the bombs and the flute (that's where most players quit)
>lame-looking main character with a lame weapon (literal stick and stones)
I mean, I myself remember quitting the original flash game at least twice before powering through it properly years later.

like a solid 40% of that game is in secret areas which are actually easy to find once you know what to look for - a little pattern on the ground, usually in the corner or on the edge of the screen showing there's something on the other side

Interesting. Last blog I read from them, I remember them complaining about the amount of time they spent trying to make the game properly scalable through zoom only to realise nobody else on the planet gave a fuck about that -- good to see they're continuing to analyse where they went wrong, tho, promising for their future development. There's something sorrowful about when a game has clearly had a shit-tonne of effort, time and heart put into it that never got rewarded. Phoenotopia was flawed, but its flaws weren't bad enough to deserve the flopping it got

I get filtered by the mechanic of discarding your whole hand on turn end without getting to save any cards for later - unlike in many other deck builders. Ended up creating very lean decks of around 7-8 cards to actually have an actual chance to play the cards I want. And it's more repetitive than I expected. I'm hoping for Breachway to pull through the EA.

It's mostly in how they handle the formula, as someone in a Spark 3 video commented:
>Someone saw the sonic unleashed intro cinematic and thought: "Yeah i will make that playable"
That's the moment you know someone handled the formula right, not only they replicate it but sometimes even improve on it, look at CULTIC, it's basically Blood but there's always something more the dev put to improve it, it's good.

Yep, they are projectiles, and yeah they fo in an arc, looks fucking great when you see them flying past you in gameplay, but the bullets are fast so remember the 1 second time frame that other games proyectiles have? same here but thanks to god the movement isn't a mud crawl, more akin to unreal honestly, and you can do a slide, you are only slow when you are standing in corpses piles.

Really? I never found them to be so quite useful. Still used a couple of them.
Being able to fly was neat, though.

graveyardkeeper suffers from having a lot of content they clearly meant to add but didn't, like the town, and a more robust system for selling craft goods.
the inn was an alright addition, since it gives you something to do with all that food and drink, but i REALLY wish there was more zombie manual labor stuff, more actual graveyard keeping, maybe making a corpse army to delve into dungeons, harvesting corpses for parts to repair your favorite zombie minions, maybe a bit of cult sacrafice to get rid of all those less than optimal organs you end up just burying and tanking your graves ranking.

For me it peaked at Vermillion Wasteland since it actually started doing something creative and subversive with the setup, only for it to return to the usual flow afterwards.
The ingame characters complaining about the MMO tropes changes little about them if they're still part of the gameplay, but at least there are lots of creative sidequests

I was picking it up and dropping it for like a year before I finally got into it. Past a certain point it just suddenly gets enjoyable, or at least it did in my case. Late game is a lot more fun also when builds are coming online and you unlock the cool moves.

I never played the DLC when it released so I replayed the whole game over the past week or so for it.
It's honestly a pretty good game if you stick with it.

I enjoyed Somnabuster and the demo for the dev's next game Disaster Arms. Feels like they have a good appreciation for Mega Drive action game design without feeling derivative, and the art direction is up my alley

What are your thoughts on the changes for the next release? I love most of them (especially the themed rooms, new monsters, monsters being able to fuck with chests) so far.
