You ARE saving gaming ROMS before the internet iron curtain closes, right?
I just started emulating the other day after years of being a pussy over the fear of getting a virus. So far I've downloaded emulators for the N64, PS2, SNES, and i'm about to start on the NES
>>717048568 (OP)I have romsets for a few older consoles, but honestly I don't ever see roms becoming hard to find, maybe harder if you are allergic to torrents
>>717050017PAL roms can be hard to find for 6th gen stuff
>>717048568 (OP)im doing retroachievments for some old games.
right now im doing the gba castlevania games and then probably golden sun.
just finished the ps2 sly games and 100% the retroachievments for them.
that was fun.
>>717048568 (OP)but anon, torrents are still saved.
>>717050125https://r-roms.github.io
>>717048568 (OP)I have been saving rooms to desperate drives ever since Nintendo started even harder on cracking down on rom sites years ago. The thing is there are still plenty up and have been going for years. Its the most recent shit like Switch games you have to hold on to.
>>717050213Thank you anonymous
I don't really care at this point. I've built up several ssd's full of romsets/hacks for every console + movies etc. and most the time it feels like there's no point to having it all on hand. Who knows when they will fail on you anyway
>>717048568 (OP)the future was supposed to be about spreading wealth of human knowledge and creation to everyone, eliminating scarcity and the need for trading through currency, ensuring this short human existence is about total freedom of expression and sharing of creations for nothing more than genuine desire for all to enjoy

wd 4tb drives are also the devil
>>717050998I will never understand retards like you saving ENTIRE SETS of consoles/roms/isos and whatever.
You will need multiple lifetimes to play even half of all that shit.
Just get a few dozens or maybe a hundred of (YOUR) favorite games of whatever consoles and call it a day/week
>>717048803how to not get a virus? the internet just aint the same
>>717048568 (OP)Im saving roms, music and buying books.

>>717053453emulation specially N64 and lower is proofed. it absolutely can't go wrong. install adblock, go to romhustler or even google/yahoo-search "[game] rom", done. if you're unsure about a newer console you check that you downloaded a rom file with the right filename switch=.nds I guess?
When it comes to PC games...you've to be a torrentCHAD. Not everyone can be a l33t torrentchad, I won't even bother if I were you. Only a select few master hackers can do it, but for console it's ez.
>>717050125>PALFor what reason? No seriously why would you want pal roms other than playing in swahili or papuan

Reminder that downloading whole sets is for suckers. You're wasting time, energy, and SSD/HDD space/health on garbage games you'll never play. The smart hoarder only saves shit he knows he likes. There's way too many games that exist to play all of them before you die anyway, why bother with ones you know are bad?
>>717050571SSDs are terrible for archival, anon.
>>717056949It's all relative. I have a 10 year old SSD that still runs at perfect health with no errors or faults at all. Granted it's used as a back up of a back up of a back up, but still. People are autistic and want a 100% non-failure rate storage solution that will last for 100 years but realistically you don't need anything that severe. You'll be dead before it matters.
>>717057072If they're not unplugged, they should be completely fine, tho.
>>717057196Why does being plugged or not matter?
>>717057637>SSDs store data in flash memory. These non-volatile memory cells can hold or release electrical charge in underlying transistors and capacitors to represent 1 or 0 respectively. This is how your SSD reads and writes data, using electrical charge to represent data in the binary format. Now, the very nature of "non-volatile" memory means that an SSD can retain data even without power.>However, the key question is: for how long? Normally, the SSD you use on your PC would stay powered down for, say, a few hours, days, or weeks, at the most. Even if your PC is turned off for months, your SSD will still work as intended when you turn your system on the next time. The real problem begins if your SSD is devoid of power for longer periods, say, well over a year or so.> Let's say you've changed devices, leaving your PC turned off for more than a year. Alternatively, you might be using multiple SSDs for cold storage, keeping them unplugged and stored safely, intending to use them only when you need to access the data. In both these cases, your SSD might start to lose data due to a loss in voltage. It might not leave it completely useless, but the data integrity could be compromised, which could be inconsequential or detrimental, depending on the sensitivity of the data.>This is why people predominantly use mechanical hard drives for cold or archival storage.https://www.xda-developers.com/will-ssd-lose-data-without-power/
>>717057637SSDs need a little recharge now and then. They don't always need to be plugged in but if you're leaving them unplugged for several years then you could have issues. Most of the time it shouldn't matter, since if you're using them for regular backups they're going to end up being plugged in at reasonable intervals.
Be honest niggas. Did I fuck up by putting my OS on a SSD? Should I have just put it on a HDD?
>>717060226>Did I fuck up by putting my OS on a SSD?No.

The death of the old internet isn't coming just from payment processors and youtube, but also OS companies like Microsoft and Apple. IIRC W10 S doesn't even let you download .exes because "you might get a virus", and I'm pretty sure this is the direction they want to take W11. Eventually you won't even be able to run anything on your machine that isn't vetted by big corporations first "for your safety". You won't be able to download emulators, you won't be able to download games (outside of the Microsoft store), you won't be able to download any cool, fun little program for organizing your PC or watching videos or whatever, it has to be an MS sanctioned product that is going to bill you monthly and definitely not allow you to use your own media files in it.

>>717082046 Absolutely. People sleeping on the archival side of this don’t realize how critical projects like no-intro and redump are. You’re not just grabbing some sketchy ROM off a random site - you’re getting validated dumps that have been hashed, verified, and cross-checked by multiple independent collectors. It’s the same mentality as proper preservation in any digital medium; we need these known-good copies before corporations finish nuking everything off the internet for reasons. not pictured: 2x external 14tb drives i back up these internal ones to every month (or whenever i have some big project i want to keep safe)
(all 4 are the same model - external 14tb WDs acquired on black friday sales, 2 of them shucked and used as SATA drives)
one cool thing about these huge hard drives is they are very fast. because of the amount of platters and how they can be read/written simultaneously, i suppose
>>717075109Some file systems like ZFS and I think BTRFS basically do this automatically. They even write the hashes to multiple places on your HDD in case one gets corrupted and if a file is corrupt then it automatically repairs it from a known good copy if you have one.

The only upside is if the ID thing stays in the UK for about a year, and then fails catastrophically due to hacks/leaks to the point where the rest of the world decides against it. >>717083663Sure there is. Unmodified executables should be signed by the developer of the game and the signature should check out. That of course doesn't help with data files, so the ideal format to store is either ISO images, installer executables from somewhere like GOG, Steam depots with associated metadata or whatever archive the site in question distributes (like zip/rar files for DLSite)
That said there's no universal way to store PC games so it is a much bigger pain to keep archival-quality.

The market that they are... now... trying to ban themselves... in the country where they... own it...

>>717112212>extremely thorough analyzing by top tier malware identifying programs and servicesHow do you think antivirus software works? It isn't performing some detailed analysis of your files and figuring out if they can execute harmful code, it's literally just comparing your files to hashes of known malware. >>717114913Fair enough, but I still think that sort of thing would be better used on something that's being passed around more. Why infect 20 when you can infect 2000? >>717135120You'll need to use a photo ID, and you'd have to be a drooling fucking retard to do that. Even dumber than giving your email to this website pre-hack.
>>717135018Already doing my butthole stretches so I can fit 5 2tb NVMEs in my colon. Stay strong bros.
>>717134873>WD shills???
How about remember to take your meds. I simply bought WD HDDs and they.just.werk for many years, it's that simple.
You could call me a shill if i started talking about some no-name chink brand in multiple replies sure.
>>717135018>>717134783>>717134725I was thinking about getting a bunch of 1TB micro sds so I can easily store them

>>717134783>get HDDs>>717135018>DO NOT buy hddsSuck a dick both of you. Make up your damn minds.. im almost starting to feel bad for that anon who's already sweating and you're making him sweat more with these contradictions
>>717135425>1TB micro sdsLiterally the WORST thing you can do anon.
You trying to smuggle shit in your anus or you trying to backup your important stuff??
external hdds and especially ssds are very small these days if you're worried about having space to store stuff in your little mud hut.

you think I'm joking, but not only is it literally already happening, my investment has already doubled in less than a year
>>717135425Those are way more volatile since they're intended to temporarily hold stuff to move between computers. Not good for long term storage. Though I've had tiny USB keys that have lasted me for over a decade so IDK.

>>717135463Gamecube only had stuff like RE0, RE1R, RE4, Tales of symphonia, mario sunshine, Wind waker, Metroid prime 1 & 2 and a few other Nintenderp games that i dont care about.
The good thing is that ALL of the games above have been ported over to either Switch, PC and/or the Wii, so gamecube emulation is useless today (unless you're a Smash Melee faggot, or a diehard Fire emblem lover then ok)
HDDs have a good track record of lasting since the 1980s at least. But I've heard the high density ones are more susceptible to bit rot.

Serious question here.. why the FUCK are all the external HDDs above 5tb (6tb and up) all mega huge and bulky (pic rel) ? and you have to power them on with a damn power cable AND plug them via usb to your pc... what the everloving fuck.
Theres nothing higher than 5TB thats just as small and compact?

>>717135220Yes, but just because you're required to provide an ID doesn't mean the internet's going down.
If you have met some good online frens and learned about some stuff, you would have found your own tight-knit community.

>>717136704brainlet here, isnt it just because larger drives need more power draw than you can reasonably pull from usb that they need the wall socket plug?
