I tried sun and moon and got bored immediately. The latest game seemed kind of fun at the start because you just run around catching everything. I mean it's also shit in a lot of ways but whatever. XY was kind of boring but I played it anyway and that's where I lost the ability to endure through a pokemon game anymore

XY was were the questionable/rushed game quality started getting obvious, since earlier gens had more redeeming qualities, but at least XY was the first 3d mainline game, so there's some slack. However, gen 7/8 was really the nail in the coffin. The toxic positivity that surrounded fucking disgraces like Let's go and SWSH - and the commercial success they got - basically eliminated any chance of pokemon games ever truly becoming good, because it really exemplified just how low the standards of "pokemon fans" are and what Gamefreak is allowed to get away with.

SV is obviously also trash, but coincidentally better than SWSH only because there's less railroading, not because Gamefreak knows how to design a good game, open-world or otherwise.

That's exactly it.. and you could argue that started even with Sun/Moon. Series was doomed as soon as fans started self-rejecting criticism on Nintendo's behalf. This is why I root for PalWorld, clearly GF doesn't view their success and fame as a responsibility and is content to just keep cashing in, and how the diehards don't see this is troubling

The only game I finished since platinum was scarlet after the switch 2 released, it was honestly a subpar experience, what someone would expect from an small indie company of 5 people and not the biggest multimedia franchise to ever existed, at least diamond had its own soul going for it, but after that gen I never found any pokemon game to be great or worth playing start to finish, although I'd wish the old ones had the QoL shit new games have since they greatly reduce the playtime.

Gen 6

I think 6 was when the coffin was set, but the body wasn’t put in until 8 and the nail wasn’t struck until 9. I still liked Gen 6 for everything that wasn’t X and Y, the community at the time was still fun and I liked the new mons + megas. I liked 7 too, it was the best out of the 3D gens in all aspects even if I’d still give it a 7/10. Ultra Sun was horrible to play through until the post game because Gen 7 sucks to replay, but I still liked comp and the new mons were great except for Zero Aura.

Sometimes I think to myself that I’ll start playing Pokemon again and that I’ll catch every single ‘mon and become the best.

I skipped 3 back when it first came out because it removed shit like day night cycle and the days of the week stuff. Came back for gen 4 and stuck with it all until 7 made me drop it with the insane handholding. I played 8 and 9. 8 was fucking awful 9 has an awful art direction but the game itself isn't terrible it just ran like shit.

Fucking LOVED megas but never understood why there were so few. Also so few new pokemon for the first time, that was extremely noticeable. Hated the story devolution, and the game itself was very weak, but, hey, it was their first attempt at 3d, it'll improve, right?

Liked the ultra beasts designs and the attempts at boss battles, hated everything else honestly, so disappointed

Kinda liked the concept (glad they were taking a new angle after the last gen) but it was undeniable now the decreasing quality was only accelerating. Never bought the dlc.

I don't even know why I bought it, one last hope I suppose. First time I didn't even bother finishing it, think I got 4 badges, maybe two of the engine car boss, something like that. Just gave up.

Shan't be buying any more. Overall I'd say Gens 2-4 just kept improving, gen 5 is probably the best between between BW having the best story and BW2 the best gameplay, but the cracks were beginning to show with mon designs. After that, it just got worse and worse. A couple good things maybe like megas, but overall undoubtedly nosediving.

All I wanted was a game with a singleplayer like Emerald or Platinum and XY's online and customization. Instead, they continued to double down on singleplayer being primarily a place to catch and raise stuff.

After how much I enjoyed Sun and Moon with its well-written story and characters (by Pokemon standards), new Pokemon designs and tropical aesthetic, Sword and Shield felt like a massive downgrade with Dexit, a cold, heavily industrialized shithole region and godawful story with the most blatant vehicle for Charizard shilling I have ever seen in the form of Leon. As if SwSh alone wasn’t bad enough, BDSP are the worst Pokemon remakes of all time. PLA was okay, but the damage had already been done. I still love the Pokemon franchise overall. I’ve played multiple fangames/romhacks. I currently play Master Sex and TCG Pocket. I look at Pokemon fan art and porn every day. But GameFreak needs to give the franchise to Monolith Soft at this point.

I was hoping Sw/Sh was a one-off, and while S/V is technically better, catching and training your Pokemon is soo trivial that you might as well import your entire team. Part of it is Game Freak being lazy and incompetent as usual, part of it is the community exploiting GF's laziness.

Might be somewhat controversial, but gen 5/Unova. Gen 5 obviously tried to soft reboot the series and I really wasn't a fan of that. The first four generations just kept building on top of one another, but gen 5 broke that pattern and not for the best. And while I do admit gen 5 has some cool designs, A LOT of them were just clear repeats/counterparts to gen 1 or earlier gen Pokemon due to only gen 5 Pokemon being available till the postgame.

So you have shit like Alomomola instead of Luvdisc, Bouffalant instead of Tauros, Audino instead of Chansey, Klinklang line instead of Magnezone line, Musharna line instead of Hypno line, Jellicent line instead of Tentacruel line, Garbodor line instead of Muk line, etc, and that's just a few of them. And in my opinion literally all of those look worse than their original counterparts. Also sucks that the actual cool Pokemon in gen 5 evolved SUPER late. Like Hydreigon, Bisharp, Scrafty, Golurk, Braviary, Mandibuzz, Volcarona, etc. So you're basically stuck with your crappy starter and gen 1 rip-offs till then.

Then in gen 6/Kalos and up I basically completely gave up. Pokemon was never meant to be 3D in my opinion. It just doesn't work. I know Colosseum and XD pulled it off but those games were never meant to be the main attractions. It was fun as a side game thing but I never wanted it to become the main attraction.

I played through Black blind and had to force my way through it. The Pokemon were just so ugly and I didn't like the map. I never bothered with any of the 3D ones.

The art style changed a bit and the remake designs are more of a downgrade specifically Gold/Ethan and Silver but the human designs are still fucking amazing. Humans didn't get bad until like gen 9 and still theres some really good designs among the horrific in game art direction.

It hasnt. Ive played them since 1999. I just hate X/Y friendship and Sword/shield gigantomax football slop. Scarlet/violet and Legends Arceus revived my hope at least gameplay-wise (played on PC only).

Gen 6 is when I started to notice the cracks in the facade and Gen 7 is when the illusion was broken.

I'm always happy when a new generation comes out. Discovering the new pokémons without spoil is the most fun. I still remember when I trained a Miaouss de Galar and expected it to evolve into a Persian but it was a Berserkatt. one of my fave of the generation :)
