You have to zap him a few times before he'll vanish. I wasn't sure if it would work with the energy pistol rather than the laser pistol, but the energy pistol does indeed do laser damage and the wiki says it should work on sending the reaper away. Probably with more shots since it has lower damage.
Also I'm pretty sure the xrays just piss the reaper off.

You don't need defenses but they can help if you can't kill the invaders fast enough. You can ignore the crawling fucker but you get an achievement if you give him a mug of coffee

The more difficult encounters where there's a lot of them benefit from just setting up a chopinator in front of a doorway or stairwell. Try and make super tomatoes as soon as possible if you just need something to eat whenever your guy is hungry, the restore 15 hunger and 10 thirst. You only get one tomato per harvest at base level but each plant infinitely regrows as long as you keep it watered. Beat it, managed on my first attempt. Taking the Plasmois rifle and the Thresher with Lode Discs was definitely a good idea since it seems like the boss was weak to holy damage, fittingly enough and staying alive was easy when I found out that the Unlost techpriest's healing aura overlapped with my briefcase's. Just had to dodge the Kamehamehas. The ending really does suck but I can't really be too mad because the ride there was so fun, I kind of already want to start over with some tweaked world settings but I think I'd rather wait and not burn myself out. Definitely one of my favorite games to come out in a while.

You spawn in the bathroom and can explore the entire mother base at night. If you look around the environment you can catch the light of Dr. Kel's quad bike moving around.
Bump into cat aliens and grab a plushie or Dr. Kel's favorite shrimp pack.
They're also aesthetically similar so it works visually.

unironically this game is the best in its genre and GOTY for me
