gf is a Sea of Thieves player, and even those degens are unhappy with the state of that game due to them running out of ideas and only pumping out cosmetics.

so if they're barley supporting their live service what are they doing?

That's not how merchandising works
It's an external company that approaches Microsoft/Rare for the license to make the merch
Just because someone is selling an expensive statue of the Great Mighty Poo doesn't mean it's meant to line up with a new Conker game, it just means the company that made the statue knew there'd be a niche audience that'd pay hundreds of dollars for a shit statue

Because nobody complains that they're "IP graveyards"
People don't accuse those games for the same cynicism Astro Bot is thrown at
I get the gripes that Astro Bot is too ingrained with PlayStation as a brand at the cost of its own identity but I think the "IP graveyard" shit is dumb because it ignores the simple reality that a lot of those IPs don't get new games because
A. They're finished
B. Their devs aren't interested and would rather work on something else
C. Their devs are dead and there's no one to inherit them

To be fair it's obvious they wanted to focus on the IPs they actually have full ownership and control over, it's also why you don't see Krystal or anything from Dinosaur Planet because Nintendo more or less owns that thanks to Star Fox Adventures.

>by that logic so is Smash Bros
In what way?
Xenoblade being announced for Smash wasn't coupled with Nintendo dismantling Monolith as an entity and letting go of the devs.

Be honest. What do you think is more likely. Nintendo doing a new F-Zero or a new Ice Climbers. Or Playstation doing a new Ape Escape or Gravity Rush?
People can always cry endlessly over how not their personally beloved franchises being chosen, but it's pretty undeniable that Nintendo with relative frequency reaches into the deep history of their properties and does new games with them. Fuck they've even recently done multiple new Famicom Detective Club.

Meanwhile Playstation has let go off all of their original in-house devs and dev teams and shaved off most of their first party devs in general. And they do not have a history of using their properties beyond the generation that they first debuted in.

Here's the thing, Mages went to Nintendo for that
If Mages didn't show up, make the pitch, and got greenlit Famicom Detective Club would still be dead
Nintendo doesn't actively prioritize reviving franchises or does so randomly
If an accomplished studio went to Sony for a new Gravity Rush (or outright pays money to license the damn thing entirely), odds are they'd get greenlit no different
I'm willing to bet the Medievil remake came from the devs going to Sony and not the other way around

What makes you so sure of that? The Ape Escape devs (the actual devs, not some third party) were drumming up excitement for a new game announcement to coincide with the anniversary at the time. But instead the project gets fucking cancelled by Playstation and later all of Japan Studio got the axe.

I'm not disagreeing but like I said, Nintendo doesn't actively make it a priority
They're just open to IP revivals if other devs want to do it and they're not an exception to the rule
Microsoft is genuinely supportive of other developers tackling their dormant IPs, that's how we got Killer Instinct back in 2013 or that Battletoads game that destroyed excitement for the series going forward after Shovel Knight and KI hyped it up
>What makes you so sure of that?
MediEvil of all things getting a remake in less than a year after a twitter campaign tried to drum up interest and Sanzaru Games got Sly 4 to be made after they pitched to them.
Admittedly, yeah Sony's not the best example to use for the reason you said.
That said, if I had the chance I'd tell Japan Studio that Knack 2 is a very bad idea.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, in an ideal world Rare would've been structured like Nintendo EPD considering how alike Rare and Nintendo (the developer) were in the 90's.
Not saying Rare would have to over rely on the same IPs, by all means I respect creative freedom, just be organized in such a way that allowed more games to be actually released

The corporatism brings out the cynicism, and the pastiche-cameo appearance of long dead IP that have a snowball's chance in hell of having anything done with them is depressing. Smash, Project X Zone, Capcom's VS games, et al., they're celebrations because they bring back the actual old characters, kit them out with new art, and use their iconic actions and scenarios. There's a lot more effort than slapping their accessories on a generic bot character like they tumbled through the soulless cosmetic micro-transaction factory. That effort pays respect to the IP that people liked.
Bringing it back on topic, you see the same cynicism when Microsoft tried to parade Conker's corpse around to promote their latest corporate nightmare, twice. With Project Spark and then with the abortion that was "Young Conker" for their failed AR glasses.

But by contrast, the Bombergirl cameos are much better received, because there's way more effort put into them and they pay more respect to the characters somehow.

I mean, Nintendo actually uses their old characters (unless you're a massive Mr Game and Watch or Duck Hunt fan, or something), and Smash Bros has the real characters in it, and let's you play as them, which is a lot better than just going "hey, look", and then doing nothing.

Ice Climbers isn't that good of a game. Smash Bros is the best thing you can do with those characters, because they have a cute design and a fun theme, and that's about it.
Plus, the actual characters are in the game, and you can play as them. That's still a video game, and that's still making use of the characters. That's not Rare going "hey, Remember the Great Mighty Poo?" every few years, and then only working on Sea of Thieves, or Sony reducing the stuff you actually liked to funko pop form in Astro Bot, and tip toeing around the fact that they disbanded the developers years ago for not selling Naughty Dog numbers.

sea of thieves is a great game and is exactly in line with the spirit of classic rare, taking an imaginative play concept like pirates and gamifying it. it's just that because of the nature of the modern industry and gaas it would become a never ending grind that would swallow up the company.

Miyamoto has gone on record as saying he had trouble trying to figure out how to evolve F-Zero, which is why GX was handed off to Sega.
F-Zero 99 is a cool but shameless rehash of an SNES launch title, it's not a new game. It's exactly the kind of game Miyamoto didn't want to make: F-Zero, again.

Is there any record of a previously old vidya company, now bankrupt or in dire straits, dissapearing from the public AAA news, and actually make a successfully comeback maybe 10 years later, or under a new company name?

I feel like this is what Rare should do already. All their IPs are dead or in a zombie-like state, they won't recover, period. What are the odds of they simply starting from scratch and make a simple indie level game or some shit and see if that becomes a starter hit?

I'm aware of that, but games like Viva Pinata and Nuts & Bolts are still stuck on the Xbox console, and I feel like those'd thrive with some new life as some modicum of cult status and enjoyment with Nintendo fans. But my argument's less towards wanting the games rereleased in a different console, and wanting the documentaries and galleries available outside Xbox as well - those were genuinely one of the most interesting parts about Replay, and having them around to watch on a cart'd be perfect. A good couple of them are available on Youtube now, but I could have sworn some are still game-locked.

"Number go up" is such a Libertarian-tier excuse, they're a dead company purely on the basis of having one game now, only one game, and it's a sandbox ocean first-person pirate simulator that had a choppy first launch at best and only managed to claw its way back to profit via numerous content updates. It's still a dead company because you got no IPs you're actively working on beyond the one game that made the most money, an original IP that died stillbirth from daddy Microsoft's layoffs, a reboot of your legacy IP that also died hard, your original founder up and retires, and your fans of old are aging out and quitting because they're dead, old, or apathetic.

It's like arguing Cartoon Network will live for a decade more because they're making money hand over fist on Teen Titans Go and keep rebooting it for seasons. Comcast just dropped them completely from the channel package, and Warner-Discovery's looking to make some cuts again real soon.

I wish nuts and bolts was it's own IP. It was genuinely a great concept for a game. Sure the banjo stuff worked to market it somewhat but that wasn't what fans of the IP wanted. Beseige is okay but it strips away the pick up and play fun entirely for engineering wank and is kind of frustrating at times.

It's more that Rare was always keen on working with new technology from DKC's graphics to pushing the N64 to its limits.
Hell, Banjo-Pilot was gonna use tilt controls and the Diddy Kong Racing remake on DS used practically every gimmick the DS could use.
A lot of Rare's questionable decisions make more sense when you put it under the context of what they've always been like across their history.
Had Rare stuck with Nintendo they'd most definitely do all sorts of stuff with the Wiimote, DS touch screen, 3DS gyro, etc

Them keeping it a Banjo-Kazooie game in spite of how drastically it was changing seems boggling (albeit they already announced A Banjo-Kazooie game previously).....until you find out that they agreed to change Dinosaur Planet to Star Fox Adventures knowing it'd be a better business move to attach it to an established IP

It was actually quite capable if the developer has time to work on it. Rare did not have time to work on it because Microcock was fasttracking the 360's release to beat Sony. They bought them in September 2002, 360 was launching November 2005. They really expected Rare to be able to learn all the new hardware/software and shit out a bunch of games in that short of a timeframe. Right after buying them out.
They did manage two games for the original Xbox despite this, but one of them was Grabbed by the Ghoulies and the other one came out a few months before the 360 launch (and wasn't backwards compatible). It didn't help that, while Microcock was fine with letting Rare do their own thing, they weren't exactly approving most of the stuff that Rare came up with. It's why so many people left after the buyout, and why Rare was relegated to Avatars and Kinect horseshit for so long.

I agree. The complaint leveled at Astro Bot isn't logical, more like console warrior drivel than a legitimize criticism. It's not Asobi's fault in the first place there isn't a new Legacy of Kain in the same way the Project X Zone devs aren't at fault for Darkstalkers being dead (which no one blamed those devs for, but /v/ will gladly put this blame on Astro Bot because it's a Sony game).

That's basically licensing out for merchandise
On one hand, Nintendo would see a profit from Rare or Microsoft or whatever paying money just to have a DK barrel or whatever plastered on physical merchandise or if they got the license to use the music for the record
On the other hand....it's Nintendo
They're really strict about their image and brand and like to keep things done on their terms

True but given the rising increased costs of game development, the pursuit of creative needs, and the prospect of success with something new it makes sense why a series like say inFamous is dormant when Sucker Punch can only make one game at a time and Ghost of Tsushima was far more successful than both inFamous and Sly Cooper
Getting a new team is possible but sometimes they're simply not available and sometimes they're just not competent
Case in point

Nintendo didn't need money so bad that they intentionally let Rare go.
Nintendo was much more likely just holding out for a better deal. Nobody was expecting Microsoft to come in at the last minute and flip the table.
Nintendo probably did think Rare's hot streak has ended to be fair but its not how its framed by most internet posters, ie. Nintendo directly sold Rare to Microsoft
