I am relatively new and have a mundane assortment of girls for doing shit like raids and whatnot but no backlog, no meta, nothing even close to maxed strength. But I dunno where exactly the line between comfortable leveling and sinking way too much into potentially non-staple characters. I've been experimenting with teamcomps to see if anything gels but haven't really been doing much other than throw some activity reports at them.
Levels are an obvious single dimensional thing to upgrade and only cost the same resource so that's simple enough. Arguably it's the same with item levels as well.
But when you throw an entire item salad that's necessary to upgrade skills or tier up the items it just becomes a mess that's more more difficult to keep tabs on. Where's a good place to stop, preferably before anyone would be considered too deep in the hole where the only sensible course of action is to keep digging.

Leveling students up and upgrading gear/skills isn't going to bite you later for the most part. You will hit a point where you start running out of reports and blurays/tech notes so don't make the mistake of trying to level every student like some people have done. The main thing you want to avoid is wasting your Eligma to get more stars on students that just aren't going to benefit from it as much as others.
