Anyhow, just pick any actual bullet hell game, learn the mechanics, then play it over and over again. If you get stuck on a section and simply can't do it, look up a run online. Don't feel ashamed, these aren't RPGs where a guide lets you break the game.

I recommend starting with Touhou 15. It's perfect for beginners. Make sure to play legacy mode.

Is there an item that lets you get through certain patterns? On hard there are some boss moves that sweep the entire screen with no break in the projectiles. Like a cross would appear on screen and tighten towards you and you take damage no matter what. I put the game down after a particular boss that just had too much HP for me to survive those phases

You should try Ikaruga. It's very beginner friendly if you play on easy. It's pretty short with 22 - 25ish mins for an average playthrough :D

Its all about pattern recognition and finding safe gaps in a maze of deadly walls. As impressive as a boss filling the entire screen with projectiles looks, only 0,001% of those projectiles actually matter to you and you have to learn to dodge.

If you want the stupidly hard bullet hell type of games, go for Mushihimesama and its sequel. Final boss in the first game is outright unfair because its patterns are half random and can be outright unavoidable.

You should try Star of Providence since 2/4 of its lead devs are working on Deltarune. The roguelite format mates it easier to ease yourself into the bullet hell elements, too.

When you get some powerups your bullets can take up a non-insignificant portion of the screen. You're focusing on the "my bullets" part when it's a combination of of the other aforementioned contributors. There can be a lot to process at any given moment and every element needs to stand out/be instantly identifiable for what it is, especially in a fast-paced high-stakes game. That's just game and visual design 101.

And yeah it's not all of them, maybe not even the majority but it hurts when an otherwise good game has that problem.

Yeah but Bullet Hell is the type of genre where usually your own bullet patterns are so wide that aiming becomes a non-issue, the focus instead shifts to staying alive under a constant hail of enemy projectiles. Its the weird nature of a subgenre of games. Not all shmups are bullet hells and in those games you might actually have to watch where you're shooting. Concentration isn't so much of an issue compared to dealing with input lag and not particularly comfortable controls.
I got only a few 1ccs on the Switch because I prefer to use a laptop, although hey at least I can say I got all of them while playing in handheld mode with the joycons, and DOJ was about to be included if I didn't fuck up the final boss right at the end, will try again eventually.

Friendly reminder: bullet hell has heaps of 'memo' in your routing and static enemy patterns. Differentiating danmaku and 'dadshmups' by just saying one is based on memorisation and one isn't is disingenuous

Undertale/Deltarune are more traditional shmups than bullethells. There’s your tip. Play the classic shmups like Gradius and R-Type and slowly work yourself up to ballcrushers like Dodonpachi, Radiant Silvergun and Battle Garegga.

I agree. 1cc'd th8 Normal, captured a few spells on Lunatic as well as Extra and it was a boring mess of bullets. Sure there are patterns, but then what? The presentation is compete utter crap. Kindergarten-tier spritework, stage background is no better than a video. It's not interesting, it's not visually compelling. But to think it's probably one of the last decent th game technically because after the engine update, the scaling got fucked and bullets became wobbly for my machine.
ZUN music only sounds good if you haven't heard anything other than his music.
But it's a good starting point for your first shmup 1cc. I think I managed to 1cc Normal in 3-5 hours while making posts on /v/hu in-between spells/segments.

Bullet Heaven 2 is a fairly accessible bullet hell. It uses cursor controls, which makes learning it a lot faster than other bullet hells. Picrel is an IQ filter that kills you with converging bullets, so dexterity won't get you a free win.
