i absolutely loathe the amount of (usually shitty isekai) series that are literally just MMOs but they dont take place in a fucking game. theres just text boxes that pop up and they read, everyone has stats for some reason and literally no one even entertains the idea that this isnt fucking weird. solo leveling is easily the worst offender in recent memory because its just straight up a normal world but sometimes oblivion gates just open and everyone has a class.

I also stop reading a manga or stop watching an anime if they pull up a video game menu and have stats or a class. I'm just so bored of it and it's never used for anything fun or interesting; it's just there to use the common shorthand for whether or a character is overpowered or underpowered due to numerical values.

I think it's fine in actual MMO isekai fiction where it's supposed to be a normal function of a video game to convey hard mechanical rules of the setting, but bothers me in traditional fantasy.

They don't use the name adventurer's guild, but for example in DQ3 you go to a pub to register adventurers for your party, and Adventure Guilds in shows like this often double as bars too, showing the obvious influence.

Really not sure why the name "Adventurer's Guild" itself caught on or the specific origin. I know Ultima Online used the term "guilds" but they didn't work like this.

Also, you can see actual named guilds in games from the 00s, like Etrian Odyssey.

More like people hate lazy story telling. They use things like adventure guilds with rankings and explicit stat screens to make up for a lack of writing ability. Need to show that the hero is stronger than everyone but is also an underdog? Instead of writing a nauced character arc, just give him god-like stats on the magic RPG screen with a cheat ability, but have him only as a c-rank adventurer.

The thing is, even older anime as derivative as it is still wasn't as lazy as this shit from the last 10 years. Look at Record of Lodoss, as generic as can be fantasy. It's literally based off a D&D campaign. But they don't devolve into talking about their characters stat sheets or talk about how Parn rolled a natural 20 to avoid the dragon's attack, which is exactly what modern isekai would do if it was inspired by table tops games instead of mmos.

There are a couple of Isekai Doctor manga. Are you talking about the one where he is actually a doctor and is teaching medicine to the beast races because only human's have healing magic? Cause that one is DOPE.

Isekai Izakaya "Nobu" is one of the only other isekai I like. It's about an izakaya. Nothing fancy, nothing magical, just an ordinary izakaya that is somehow connected to fantasy land. The proprietor doesn't have any special powers, he is just a modern chef. Yet somehow by simply by attending to his costumer's needs while providing them a peaceful respite, cold beer, delicious food, and a sympathetic ear he helps troubled people navigate their lives.

I am not honestly sure of its influence in Japan but Ragnarok Online pretty much codified the generic mmo anime rpg feel back in the early 2000s. Its weird because to this day, no mmo or rpg feels quite like it back in its golden age. Like as in, you literally had adventurers going around prontera, payon or izlude inquiring about forming parties to go on adventures. It would often have the typical anime isekai party of veteran player who plays knight, a semi rookie archer or thief, an acolyte who's almost always a girl, maybe a merchant and finally some novice who doesnt know what he or she is doing.
The advent of the modern internet pretty much prevents organic adventures or party finding like this from happening ever again. You had to be there.

Completely mogged by FFXI in Japan. FFXI defo had that vibe when it was still live and not in zombie mode. You couldn't solo shit, you needed to form connections to actual people and be able to work together as a cohesive party without ego or a bad attitude because some of those Notorious Monsters were insane in how long the battles were and how much coordination it took. If you couldn't cooperate like actual friends and work together towards a common goal it wasn't the game for you.

I miss my old Link Shell and the adventures we had together. Life goes on, you grow up, and people drift apart.

It's like how if someone wants to include fantasy races they'll be influenced by LOTR even if they're not consciously trying to copy LOTR, simply because of how influential it was. The thing you have to remember about a lot of LN fantasy writers is they don't actually play video games they just get all their knowledge of fantasy from other anime and manga. Your 80s primordial JRPG makers played D&D and Wizardry and Ultima and translations of western fantasy literature like Lord of the Rings, Elric of Melnibone, pulp stuff like Robert E Howard's Conan the Barbarian were all popular. People building nascent genres were experiencing all kinds of different media, that just really doesn't exist these days in a way that makes it to mass media production.
So they're just vaguely aware of shit like Dragon Quest 3 or Wizardry or whatever where you go to a place and all your RPG-ing shit that isn't an item shop or an inn happens there but they have no actual firsthand experience.

They're like /v/, they don't play video games.

On the other side of the gender gap you have the whole villainess story element. That's referencing very specifically one game series, Angelique.
You think all these manga writers all of a sudden played an otome game from the 90s?
No, you're a hero, put on this Erdrick cosplay, go kill a demon king, check in with the local union office, that's all that fantasy amounts to for these guys.

Solo Levelling at least has very specific reasons for why things are set up the way they are and really the main character is the only one who has a status screen.

Angels are using dungeons to slowly expose humans to magic so when they fight a new war against demons in a decade or two the humans don't all die from magic radiation. The status screen is set up as a ritual to train the MC into becoming the host of the reincarnation of a dead angel/demigod.

I still think it's fucking hilarious that the goddess "Fantasy" made a party of what was supposed to eventually be the new platinum heros then fucked up all of her rolls leading to "Reality" slaughtering almost all of them, only to have GS take over and started training a character with INSANE potential the art of war crimes, subterfuge, and genocide. Long Live the Queen. This is an otome game that isn't from Japan, but already has many elements from villainess stories, like death flags, ceremonies or events that you read in a wikia. If an American game has that, there might be spinoff Angelique games that the writer played and we haven't translated it.

But you insist that the writer has NOT played any game whatsoever. When even some /v/ poster here played Skyrim? how do you know? What if they did play skyrim? One isekai is about parry, what if parry is a reference to dark souls?

It depends on the western isekai:

A Princess of Mars - The guy comes back to earth by accident and the book is a journal he left to his nephew while he was searching for a way back.

Dragon and the George - The guy mainly wants to get back to his girlfriend/wife and not be a dragon. Once he's been back in the real world for a while he's fine with going back to fantasy world as long as his wife's there.

Thomas Covenant - The guy had an extreme case of leprosy and spent the first three books convinced everything was an elaborate halluncination.

Magic Kingdom For Sale SOLD! - Everything is set up by the main bad guy to try and force the dude to leave so he regains possession of the kingdom and can sell it to another schmuck.

Gandalara Cycle - Guy wants to go back but eventually figures out he was reincarnated and the world is post-apocalypse.

Guardians of the Flame (Possibly the first LitRPG ever published) - Bad guy sends D&D group to other world as their player characters. They have to trek across the continent to open the door back to their world which will let the bad guy return from our world. D&D group forced to settle in world as they almost die fighting dragon guarding door.

The reason nobody in the West can really point to the true origin of the "adventurer guild" trope was because the "adventurer guild" trope was popularized by Japanese tabletop RPGs in the 80s and 90s, as well as Replays (LNs that are basically story retellings of Japanese TRPG campaigns) which are extremely niche and untranslated in the West. You'll notice almost everything present in modern "RPG/MMO fantasy" anime actually originated in Japanese tabletop RPG circles and their stories/replays in the 80s and 90s. Adventurer guilds, catgirl slaves, menus and stats somehow being a part of the world, round circular cities, everything.

The Elder Scrolls inspired 95% of anime fantasy elements. The goblin quests in Oblivion are copied 1:1 in many anime, Goblin Slayer even quotes Oblivion NPC dialogue a couple of times.

Plenty of games do this but it tends to be a shitty boring mechanic since you usually get fetch or "kill this" quests.
Arc the Lad 2, Atelier Iris 3, there lots of other RPGs but I often avoid ones that are driven off guild quests.

Absolutely, its soulless as fuck. It appeals to a very mechanical type of fantasy that I think is only suited for games. It pulls away from a more classical, analog fantasy of being in a strange land with strange characters and instead just feeds the viewers lizard brain with numbers go up.

but the entire modern power fantasy isekai forumla is based on SAO.
SAO which was straight about being trapped in an MMO, and two of biggest ones following after were also MMO based (OP bone daddy and mmo economics in the DATABASE)

It wasn't until all these faggots who had never played a videogame in their life wanted to copy what was popular jumped on the train it turned into the statscreen mess isekai is right now.

>Replays (LNs that are basically story retellings of Japanese TRPG campaigns) which are extremely niche and untranslated in the West.
There was a guy on /b/ back in the mid 00s who was translating the Record of Lodoss War replays. They were really funny and nothing like the anime. For example the player who was playing Deedlit was playing her like an Fairy from English folklore. Just constant shit testing and pranks that were so ruthless the player who was playing Parn got killed in the first session thanks to the Deedlit player's bullshit and the DM just rolled back the entire session.

I think part of it is that your typical isekai author just can't come up with a better plot reason for why the MC (for the sake of the audience's understanding) would be constantly getting exposition thrown at him about the most mundane aspects of the fantasy world.

Because Ultima 8 never came to consoles, and even with ports to NEC systems, Japan wasn't a big PC country. This meant they missed out on the rapid evolution of PC RPGs in the 90s, and instead stuck to console RPGs that still mostly aped from Wizardry

Basically, the West doesn't actively love Ultima and Wizardry as much since they're just one part of the DNA for the last 30 years of RPGs. For Japan, the entire JRPG genre is a Wizardry clone, so Wizardry is just still around
