I've tried many times to get into this series by playing RS3, but no matter what character's chapter I played, everything I did just felt like one dead end after the other: Areas that either lead to nothing, have really tough monsters, or boss fights where you do barely any damage and then get your ass handed to you within a turn or two. I also had trouble understanding the weird character progression and battle systems.

Am I retarded? I'm a boomer who bought Saga Frontier on launch because I loved Squaresoft so much at the time, and it completely, totally filtered me. I could never figure out what to do, where to go, what the hell was going on. I'd just wander around talking to NPCs, find myself in some random area where the enemies kicked the shit out of me and I wasn't even sure if I should be there, then limp away and repeat. That was decades ago and I still remember the disappointment.

Yeah, but SaGa filtering you has nothing to do with that.
These games show that the vast majority of JRPG fans are completetly helpless the moment they aren't put in linear rat mazes and handheld in literally everything, they're just too complex and demanding for most people.

OG SF2 was really rough around the edges and a lot of planned scenarios had to be cut due to part of the team being busy with Legend of Mana, the remaster fixes that by adding quite a few new scenarios that help flesh out many characters who got a very short stick back in the OG and it also adds a long list of improvements and QoL to the base game like the rest of the remasters, on top of some extra challenges, some new playable characters and various functions like the Pocketstation minigame being included and also enhanced.
Like all the other remasters it's very much a director's cut sort of deal and the definitive version of the game.

yes unironically, frontier is by far one of the easiest games in the series, it's more of a series of expositions in storytelling than it is a deep and enthralling rpg, which was already the direction that rs3 heel-turned to following rs2's very strong very game-heavy singular story approach

They've added a lot of new scenarios to both Gustave's and Wil's sides, it's good stuff overall and there's many needed additions that help making certain parts of the story and characterization flow much better.
If I had to complain about something that isn't the new "secret" NG+ scenario is that I wanted a bit more new stuff with Johan, but I'm personally satisifed with what they did, the QoL improvements to the gameplay are also amazing, not only do the battles run at an acceptable framerate now, duels are no longer a slog due to the new turn repeat and combo library function, there's also a couple of good rebalances to characters.

FFII > FFI > FFIII
Does it have flaws? A lot of games have flaws, but it is fairly easy going in regards of progression, even without trying to 'game' it.

SaGa demands the player to pay attention to the little clues it gives and also do their own foot work in wanting to explore the world. Often times you should feel hopelessly lost. On the other side there are various levels of hand holding. You'd have to literally be brain dead to not know how to progress in Emerald Beyond. Scarlet Grace is fairly easy to progress in since quests are done within the maps you acquire them in. Since there's almost no dungeons you eventually will find yourself at the end point of the game. The Gameboy games have standard story progression of the time. You are told where to go and it's linear. Romancing SaGa 2 eases the player in with limiting where they go at first and slowly opening the world. SaGa Frontier 2 you just have story points on the map, the only trouble you might have is typical 5th gen map readability in not knowing if an object was a door or intractable. Romancing SaGa 1, 3, and SaGa Frontier expects much more out of you.

So what if Final Fantasy has not been good since 10? FF17 will be a retvrn to form, you'll see. I'm not crazy, you are.
