>yeah, I just don't ever know what it means in the context of a video game.
The original table top RPG (Cyberpunk 2013/202) was a pastiche of existing cyberpunk materials and framed in an 80s vision of the future. It's a grab-bag of themes/styles from The Warriors, Mad Max, Escape from NY/LA, Blade Runner, Neuromancer, and probably a bunch of others.
It was one of the earlier RPGs to start you off as an every-man character who strives for greatness. You had class/role options like Media (Journalist), Rockerboy (Musician), Lawman (Police), Corpos, Solos (Mercenaries), Nomads (Bikers), Techs (Medics and Engineers), Fixers (Organisers and Grifters), and Netrunners (Hackers).
It was also somewhat notorious for having A LOT of intricate mechanics, especially when it came to gears and guns. Different ammo types, weapon mods, clothing, armour, cyberwear, gear etc. It all added up to giving you little bonuses to edge cases, and often having the right tool for the right job mattered.
Typical games would involve you and your mates making up some characters, starting a crew, and running low-level jobs for Fixers around Night City. You'd either achieve fame and greatness (and then die), or you wouldn't (and then die). It was a lot about going out in a blaze of glory - living fast and free.
Some people were kinda miffed when Cyberpunk 2077 ended up being more of an Action Game with some RPG elements. Fair enough. Cyberpunk has a lot of fans, and the original creator of 2013/2020 was involved with CDPR in bringing 2077 to life. That and the launch back in 2020 was abysmal, as the game was released quite bug-laden and nearly unplayable on older generation consoles.
