Drakengard/NieR come to mind. Drakengard games and their multiple endings are usually just choosing how the main characters will suffer instead of entirely avoiding it. Nier games use endings as almost chapter markers but once you get to the later endings it's much of the same.
Though imo it's more immediately worse in Drakengard (The best ending in Drakengard 1 would be the worse ending in any other game) if you look at extended stuff in NieR, you can see how much of the hope you see in those last endings end up being in vain. If you are a main character written by Yoko Taro you're just fucked and you're life has a 90% chance of dying in tragedy. Gameplay can be hit or miss for a lot of ppl tho

Drankengard characters got mostly fucked, but the "true" endings of Nier are relatively better. Sure, the world was "fucked" after Kaine revived her lover boy, but it still somehow gave rise to another civilization that would fall and lead into Automata, which technically had 9S and 2B being rebuilt and living a very long life together.

>HAHA WHAT IF THERE LIKE...IS NO GOOD ENDING!? WHAT IF YOUR MAIN CHARACTER DIES!?!?! ARENT YOUR EXPECTATIONS SUBVERTED!? I AM CLEVER!
I actually hate this shit, and still maintain that it doesnt really work in a video game. Having "bad endings" is okay. I encourage it even. There should be a good ending obtainable though. A win condition if you will. If not, then literally what is the point? You can fail and die at any point in the game. There's your bad ending right there. Wow! So avant garde! Save that doomer groomer shit for weak horror movies.

they didn't steal animation ideas, those are novel to the Japanese. They simply appropriated western cinematography. At least the 80's and 90's anime movies and shows did a lot. Some of them proved to be pretty unique and made it their own though, like Ghibli for instance.

Why can't I flip my car if it rolls over when I'm a pedestrian?
Why can't I buy crafting components from vendors like I could before?
Why can't I craft mods from components like I could before?
Why can't I make armour mods for my armour if there's an armour slot?
Why is there still a transmog feature if the armour slot does nothing now and is basically just a cosmetic feature, which means there's a cosmetic feature on top of a cosmetic feature?
Why can't I just change the colour of my car, why do I need to do the terrible concept of TwinTone™ where I have to scan cars in traffic for the colour I want like I am hunting Pokémon, and why does it cost in-game money, and why do I only have a slot of 20 colours able to be saved across all possible cars in my garage?? (The colours you save are for one car each at a time and only)

Fucking game is so retarded, it's been incompetence from day 1, 10+ years of waiting for this shit and it was the wrong genre, made terribly. I wonder if the game even had a director with a vision for what they wanted.

It feels like a game made by people who were learning to make games as they made it. You feel me?

>it's my fault the game is bad
There was 10 years of non-stop hype threads pouring over the promises CDPR made about this game, talking about how awesome and detailed it would be like some kind of sci-fi Elder Scrolls on steroids where each bar, street, club, etc. had its own faction and gang (i.e. Jig Jig Street) and you can change any outcome of the story by being what you want and aligning with who you want; where any random NPC on the street had a detailed backstory and faction you could join and explore their story; how you could be a rocker boy, media, cop, solo, any character class from the pen and paper RPG, and lore dumps of the pen and paper RPG, and just basically day dreaming about how fucking killer this game was gonna be.

The only red flags were the review embargo and that was right before launch, no-one expected this game to be dogshit the way it is, or was, or rather still is even after 5+ years of "oh shit fix it this will ruin our company" patches; and the fact it took so long to develop and dropped like two trailers seemingly focusing on the player character being in MaxTac and then suddenly not

1. It should not have been an FPS GTA clone
2. It should have been a CRPG in the fashion of Divinity 2 / Baldur's Gate 3 (yes I know it was not out yet) / Rogue Trader
3. No-one expected the level of bugs and gitches and shitty systems it launched with
4. Everyone was disappointed with it

Yes, the movie is great, bleak as fuck.
The sound track is probably more famous than the movie and is why for the next decade every other movie trailer was cut to lux aeterna by clint mansell and the kronos quartet.
The book on the other hand isn't light reading.
I read some of Last Exit to Brooklyn in college and its just a cesspool of what lower class 50's brooklyn was really like from someone who was a lowlife drug addicted scumbag wallowing in it all.
Its a very important piece of contemporary american literature, but its the kind of thing that makes you feel gross and greasy, the kind of filth that gets you on the inside, that you can't just scrub off in the shower.
Ginsberg was a big fan of Last exit and requiem. So if you know what that means, then you know what that means, and it will make up your mind for you.

I had a godawful education + family was always moving around constantly (I was often in 3 different schools per year). Been wanting to become less retarded and actually going through all the required reading is on my to-do list. Should I start with The Great Gatsby or Brave New World? My grandmother was a former teacher, and I'm the oldest of her grandkids, so she made it her goal in life that I learn to read, and enjoyed reading, and I've been thankful for that my whole life.
Great Gatsby was always the one book that was required reading in school that everyone actually enjoyed, so that's a solid place to start.
1984 and Brave new world should be read back to back the first time. They're both pretty short, though 1984 is a lot more of a slog.
I'd also suggest reading catcher in the rye. Especially if you had a shitty education and were constantly moved around. Its a book that will resonate with anyone who has a Y chromosome who was an angsty teen.
Slaughterhouse 5 is also top tier. Kurt Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors, and he has an incredible way with laying some heavy shit on you while also setting up the punchline of the whole novella.
Moby Dick, ultimately, is where its as. If you can make it through Moby Dick (and you can, kids have read it for hundreds of years) then all literature afterwards is basically addendum, and everything before is redundant. Its a book about a whale, and its a book about everything.
Its long with encylopedic dumps of Nantucket Whaling history, the global whale oil trade, the finer points of ship building and sailing, 19th century marine biology (a chapter is spent explaining why whales aren't fishes only to conclude with fuck you, it's a fish), metaphysical meditations on man's nature, fate, and our place in an unflinching uncaring universe.
Really is top tier.

Honestly I think the most important thing is to just read, and read regularly. Doesn't need to be high literature (though its good to throw some of those in from time to time just to broaden your horizons a bit).
Like take Gravitys Rainbow for instance, by Pinecone. There is some shit he manages to do in the book that boggles the mind. Like a harmonica that falls through the book.
And classics like Treasure Island. Its a great fucking book if your inner child isn't dead and you like pirates.
You can't go wrong with Mark Twain.
The Aubrey-Maturin books are also maximum comfy (the series of books that master and commander was based on).

On another note, I recently (this year) realized my own personal signifier of being an avid reader was not the amount of books I consistently read yearly but that I am dragging my e-reader with me wherever I go, to the degree that if I have to wait ANYWHERE for ANY reason then I am bringing a book with me to read. Reading is as synonymous as breathing to me. I don't even shit in my own house without making sure I have my ereader, even if I only read half a page.

Christ tell me about it. I would love nothing better than to try and discuss some of the stories of Robert Aickman to try and figure out what the hell is even going on in there but no dice.

I love that movie. I can kind of understand why the movie makes some people uncomfortable, but I don't really get it. Everytime I watch this movie it's a good time.
If there's a girl watching the movie for the first time I make sure to look at her and scream ASS TO ASS during the flashlight party.

It's sad that she gives up on her dreams because of her addiction, but they really could've portrayed her situation worse. Better to not have shown what levels of depravity she's willing to go for at all. Like she shows up to the rich guy party and the door closes and it's assumed that they ran a train on her and made her do totally disgusting things and not just do ASS2ASS with another woman.
