What's your excuse for not playing the greatest version of Battlefield to ever exist? When the devs switched to a standalone client, using BF2 assets, the game was considered so good that EA and their army of lawyers decided to just say "yea sure, why not" and left them alone.

It's not milsim. It's basically just BF2 with some slight adjustments to make most meaningful vehicles (tanks, APCs, AA, bomber jets) require two person crews to be used effectively, much larger maps, and higher TTK with a more punishing HP system that makes the medic kit very useful. It's very much a blend of milsim and arcade, with most of the "milsim" stuff just being things that benefit squads and teams that actually work together instead of everyone running around not giving a shit what other people are doing. It's nothing like Arma or Operation Flashpoint. Matches these days typically only last 45 mins to an hour, and the actual game is very easy to pickup.

I'm of the opinion that it's not a true milsim game if, in the course of being a grunt for an operation, you aren't so bored to your tits that you start chatting random shit with the boys to pass the time. In my view they're social games just as much as any other kind of game, you need that boredom and complacency to get the sheer panic when the shells start dropping and it makes it a lot more impactful if that player model that got mulched when your APC got hit was the dude you were arguing with about ass vs. tiddies to pass the time and not some bot. I think it makes for a lot of good fun you don't get anywhere else, and I've never been or particularly wanted to be affiliated with the military. The tryhard military wankers are usually unanimously agreed to be the worst sort in these games.

You realize the only reason Squad exists is because of PR, right? The original Squad devs were PR devs, and Squad is the leftover remnants of what was supposed to be PR2. 10 years after release It's still missing tons of features that PR has already implemented. They just introduced attack helicopters this year. This would be excusable, given PR's substantial first mover advantage, if it wasn't for the fact that squad has always been a $40-50 game (currently $50) while PR has always been free. Even after a decade with a fully paid dev team, they have 25 maps, with a 5th of them just being 1 to 1 recreations of existing PR maps (Kokan, Al Basrah, Fools Road, Lashkar, Fallujah).

Don't get me wrong, PR is a deadman walking and a shell of it's former self, mostly because of the dated graphics, but it's still leagues above Squad as a complete passion project.

Fuck the deviation system! Its fucking bullshit! Every time I come back to PR the fucking deviation system pisses me off. I remember back when PR had minimal deviation the game was much better. You actually stood a chance with bolt actions and semis. You didnt need to rely on spam in cqc to secure a kill. I used to run my own servers with custom rules(back when you could still do such a thing). People loved it! My servers were always full, even on weekdays and early mornings. But the devs didnt like that. They introduced server licensing around version 6 and it completely ruined the game. My community died overnight. Nobody wanted to play anymore. Not pr as the devs intended. It was boring. I went from multiple full servers to barely keeping 1 alive even on the weekend. And god forbid that you complained. The devs were quick to find or manufacture any reason to revoke licenses. If you didnt kiss their asses no server license for you! I remember one server getting mysteriously shut down because one of the admins got into a nasty flamewar with one of the forum mods. Rmod mongol I think it was. The devs said they had nothing to do with it, but I think they were just trying to save face and not scare away other server owners. And communities that ran older version 5 servers risked getting their licenses pulled by the petty ass devs. They were warned to update. Like I was. Sadly with the way people are nobody wanted to play the superior older versions. They saw the bigger version number and wanted that. Then when they added more deviation in version 7. I quit, just quit. Shut down my server. Told the devs to stick their licensing agreement up their arses and stayed away from pr as long as I could. But curiosity keeps me coming back. Hoping they fixed their shit. No they havent. They added new toys but the game is old and dying. Even now 8:30am friday theres only one russian server thats about half full. With devs like this no wonder sqaud turned out so shite!

2011-2014 was the golden age imo. There were a few instances where there was an uptick in players, but their effectiveness reduced as time went on:
>BF2 source code leak, 2018(?)
>Covid, 2020
>Russian-Ukranian War, 2022
>Gaza conflict, 2023
By the way, the EU servers still fill up every night, but there's a distinct lack of American players. You can track servers here:
https://prspy.realitymod.com/
The only full servers are: (especially at night and especially during the weekends)
>Russian (unless you speak Russian or join an English-speaking squad you will not have fun here)
>European (biggest mix of players)
>Latam (actually have two servers, main is Brazilian and second is Chilean for spillover players)
What remain of US players mostly play on the Latam ones, otherwise they might join the EU one before they start logging off to sleep.

Yea I started playing around end of 2011/early 2012. I'm by no means an oldfag, but I definitely got to experience some of the best times to play. But yes I know the state of the servers is pretty dire. HOG had some pretty faggy admins, I got away with a lot of shit just because I was a known regular, but I saw plenty of people getting banned for minor trespasses. Either way, their closure marked the beginning of the real bad times as far as I'm concerned. It's honestly impressive the game is still receiving big updates at this point. A true passion project.

Just thinking back to that late night NA scene, it was cool to see mini waves of playerbases show up and stick around, like all those japanese players that ended up becoming regulars. Only people I can single out as a total fags from all these years of playing is the hog admin jevski, and bluedrake. For how clan stacky H or prwars was, they were fine dudes and often squad led. For how often dudes may have cas whore'd or tank whore'd or whatever, it was all good when we went to a diff map and suddenly you're running c4 bikes together. But those two fuckheads, jevski ruining HOG and turning people off the game nightly, and bluedrake screaming into his mic acting like a fucking retard and introducing a braindead dribbler youtube playerbase. Haha yea Jevski was a shithead, and I remember the days where Bluedrake was trying to promote his own server, backed by his cohort of dickriders. If I remember correctly, he was even trying to develop a competitor game that never went anywhere. Like I said earlier, HOG admins were pretty faggy, especially as Jevski's control-freak nature whittled away at any admins that weren't yesmen. I got away with a ton of shit just because I was a longtime regular, that I would see relatively newer players get insta-banned for. At the time I had an "it is what it is" type of attitude, but it's sad that the no-fun-allowed mentality eventually killed the server since they banned so many guys. Any chance you recall that hacker viruselli? Used to roll with CIA, I remember it being a whole fucking thing when it was revealed he was cheating and ghosting.

Albeit it seems like all his new videos get shit views and the game is somehow still early access. Only really knew Viirus because I remember running CAS helos with him every once and a while before he was exposed. Boggles my mind that someone would hack and cheat in a game that was already in its deaththroes at the time, but oh well I guess. Finns are a strange breed.

Have rebuilt a screenshot folder 3-4 times by now, and I haven't taken any since the new build, since the magic is gone and I really only pop in every once and a while to scratch the itch.

You're right that CIA was not the greatest, but I remember Kokan & Hookers 24/7 was my home server when I first got started, back when you never had a problem finding multiple full servers. Only CIA admin I really remember besides Swampfox / Viirus was PlatinumUBL, everyone else is just a blur though.

No it's not a pasta. It's from the heart.

The devs are so far up their own arses. They cant ever see sunlight! I had friends who stuck around with PR far longer than I did and they told me how the devs only became more elitist with time. A few of those friends tried to add to the project. They became contributors. And every single one had nothing good to say about the dev team. Most left on bad terms. One of my friends was a mapper and none of his maps were ever admitted into the game. But other maps made by the devs friends were. I played his maps they werent bad. Needed some minor tweaks but were far better than the other maps of the time. One of the maps was urban vietnam. Something which is still lacking to this day. Its no wonder why how awful squad was in the first few years of its existence. The same people with god complexes trying to force people to pay for their vision. When its free its bearable. But when you have to pay for shitty art tahts when it hurts. Squad got better after the buyout IMO. Still cant swim or pickup friendly or enemy kits though.

idk if you've played squad before so ill just compare like you haven't
differences;
>PR
it's free, it has had constant content updates since 2007, most of it is modder quality.. some of it is insane shit that you struggle to understand how someone put this into the bf2 engine. the playerbase is at it's worst and weakest, the rounds you play will be abrasive and unfun (at first)... then hopefully not later on, the people aren't as good or helpful as they once were, the trickle down means worse people learn the game, then those worse players teach the game. the content is expanded bf2, there's jets.. there's helis, there's boats, there's anything you could want. pop is extremely low, if you're in na you're going to have to larp european, or deal with the 3rd worlders hosting from brazil. if you're european, enjoy hearing russian
>SQUAD
it's 40 dollars or something, it's had constant 'yearly' content updates since 2015 or 2016. the content is on the mid side, nothing spectacular, but you can play as turkey if you're a roach (what a moment for turkroaches). they're just now adding in attack helis(they suck). jets are a pipe dream. it's at like 1/10th the amount of mechanics, vehicles, maps, etc that pr has. the community is full of mouth breathing retards but people are pretty good at teaching, certain servers get pretty competitive and tactical. there's a big modding scene. servers hosted all over the world, pop is high. not a steep learning curve
Gunplay is bad~ish in both games, PR is so absurdly over the top with its gun mechanics that you will probably struggle to get accustomed and that's ontop of struggling with the rest of the game mechanics and its clunkiness and age. Squad no longer feels like a tech demo so that's good, the bad is that the soldier has noodlearmitus so it's once again a learning experience just to shoot your gun on target, but less unforgiving then PR.

Have you checked out Forgotten Hope 2? That one has much more arcade gameplay than Project Reality. It's emphasis is on historically accurate vehicles and weapons while remaining arcade, "easy" and accessible. There are no instant ragebans, no requirement for joining a squad or having a mic, vehicles are never locked, so giganoobs can also use them if they so please. It's easy but the skillcap is huge and there is so much quality content there.

I don't understand. Omaha Beach for FH2 was released in April 2014. Have you played this map in this mod? The gameplay is not the same here as in some other games or mods.
If you have 2 clueless noobs in the ship artilleries, then yes it will be bad. Anything above clueless noobs tho? bound to have a tough but a fair fight.

People will say that "Walking for 5 minutes to the next battle is not fun!", but running and gunning ten seconds into the action requires constant boring repetition, no strategic depth, and gets tiring pretty damn quickly. Theres some value in making every single fight feel like its the culmination of your previous plans, especially if it succeeds

The only criticism i can give is the somewhat janky player controls. Jumping and running should be more fluid, and shooting should be more accurate imo

How would you compare them with arma reforger, ive played it and enjoyed it quite a bit. Seems to me like arma is a more serious game but players are a lot more laid back (on normal public servers). I played hell let loose and enjoyed it too. But the average player seemed to take the game a whole lot more seriously, despite the game being significantly less of a sim

I haven't played Reforger in like 6 months but it's a full on sandbox, it has an open tactical combat layer that you can play as hardcore or as casual as you want and the majority of people are loading up on gear and driving around solo and finding fights or whatever. PR/Squad you will be required or encouraged to talk, listen to or give orders and your main obj is to play your role. That combat layer is a bit more complex when you have x y and z problem pop up because you're the only person within 400m with AT because your squad only has one AT guy. Just one example but yeah, I think it's the opposite and reforger is less serious then most tact shooters. When I was playing it there was basically no one actively communicating for a strategic purpose, just banter and bongrips on mic.
