I've actually been playing a lot of retro games with RetroAchievements recently, I know on the surface they sound like stupid "bing bing dopamine" points or whatever to /v/, but they encouraged a lot of unique challenges and deeper exploration from old favorites.
The DKC2 set is perfect, the Super Mario World one is great as well.

That said, fuck me, they better not ruin it. That screenshot doesn't seem to imply that RetroArch and such will no longer be able to support RA however, so I think it'll continue being fine? Sounds like a nothingburger.

I genuinely enjoy RA's, I just wish some of the popular games weren't held back by shitty sets. It feels like people are too scared to give these games revisions because they're too big and it might upset the people who have already mastered them.
See: FF7, all the comments hate it and want the low level crap in a subset. JRPG's are THE grindan genre, nobody wants that crap in the main set.

You find a game, look at the achievements, and it's either: pointless (just progression achievements, eg "Beat level 1, 2," etc), boring ("Get every character to the max level"), or masochistic ("Beat the game in 4 seconds blindfolded (0.02% completion rate)). I use retroarch on my 2 handhelds and arcade cabinet. You will spend an hour watching a youtube video trying to understand what the fuck global, folder, core, game, and override configurations are. You will spend another hour trying to set it up for all your emulators, inevitably screwing up and having your settings overridden and needing to start from scratch. You will then spend another hour and hopefully getting it right this time. Then you will spend another hour to get shaders and bezels working properly without scaling being fucked to shit. And then you will watch another 30 minute video to understand how to link retroarch folders to syncthing and get savestates working properly.

In my experience a lot of older JRPG's work fine in their native Japanese, because people use the Japanese roms anyway (and then patch them with English translations) because either a US/PAL version doesn't exist or because it's shit (eg some Final Fantasy games)

I remember when doing something arduous in a game would reward you with something cool, like a special weapon, or an outfit... something. The site is fine as long as you actually look at the sets before attempting them because there are some completely reasonable ones that aren't full of 1cc/damageless/speedrun/"best score in every stage"/grind for 60 hours nonsense littering the list or 500 achievements basically being used as bookmarks like Digimon World 1.

Just stay away from non-Nintendo RPGs or arcade games and you're typically fine with the lists being fun. Once you start stepping away from Nintendo RPGs or touching arcade games the lists get completely retarded "Use a guide to 100% the game and make five separate backup saves" levels of ridiculousness, "1cc while not using the main attacking method of the game", or "Beat this game like ten times using multiple different setups even though the experience barely changes" like Castlevania Circle of the Moon.

To be fair, having a "community manager" is usually a bad sign for any website regardless of who's doing the job. I will give Nepiki credit insofar as I haven't seen him push any politics since they brought him on. That's not par for the course these days but RA is better for it. Importantly, the site's population has doubled in the past year, so faggots of all varieties are likely going to try and co-opt it with "signalling" for various causes. If they keep the site as narrowly focused as possible maybe they can avoid that.
