I think it's damn good. But there were aspects of it that made me realize it wasn't quite "hitting" through the roof. It's little things, like how static the game feels at times.
There are parts between gameplay and cutscene that kinda gives me that "MMO" feeling, where they didn't put in any attention to detail, and DK is just in his idle pose while the screen fades to black.

There are segments with bosses and cutscenes back to back that are absolutely phenomenal, but there are also parts of the game where it really loses its momentum, but it mostly happens in the 45-70% way through the main story.

Overall I find the game to be more iconic than Odyssey in the end, simply because it's a new formula, and brand new style of gameplay but it's still basically an action/platformer. Odyssey's biggest con is that it's just Mario 64/Sunshine in a new plot and world, and there are 10x the amount of "stars" to collect.

DK feels like it takes that but the mixes it with experimentative ideas, and it makes it stand out more. The worst part is that it sometimes has, like I said, that "client" feeling and you can tell so much of that came from being made by Splatoon developers who are used to making session-based game design.

The challenge of the game is really just fighting your own greed, but the elephant bananza breaks the rules. I can just suck up the land to get some maps, and in the process I get shit tons of lives, gold, etc. so now challenges feel meaningless with all the powerups, and I can greedily explore without worrying about dying at all basically.

Of course it's mid. Nintendo games are basically like indie games but with slightly bigger budgets and way more money to blow on marketing. They do everything as cheaply as possible so that they can maximize profits.

That's not to say going too far in the opposite direction is okay either-- Ubisoft dumped half a billion dollars into Ass Creed Purple Drank Ninja and it's dogshit. I think there's a place for AAA but it has to be right in the sensible middle, not glorified 3D indie titles and not wannabe movies with always online pay to win garbage mechanics like a phone game.

Doom 2016, Helldivers 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and the Resident Evil 2 and 4 remakes are a couple examples. It's highly subjective though and that's just my opinion. I listed the aforementioned games because the budgets on them were not so astronomically high that they'd bankrupt a studio if they sold less than 10 million copies, they were not trying to be the next Call of Duty or GTA, and they were not desperately chasing after a hot new trend. The big takeaway is that publishers need to stop copying the homework of whatever game is currently making the most money and then dumping everything they have into trying to claw away a little piece of that mountain, because it never works. We've been watching this viscous cycle ever since the 7th generation when everyone was trying to make a COD killer and we saw studio after studio go bankrupt.

Sounds like a good idea, but some banana's are legit in the middle of no where, where you'd never find them without sonar. Also because of this I sometimes flat out missed the challenge around the banana and found it missing the entire challenge before it.

Its a fun game, but not a game I could play in longer sessions then 2 hours before getting a bit bored. I still have to finish the game.

I do enjoy it a lot and I respect the effort that went into the systems in play, but to me its in no way a perfect game or that fucking amazing.

I don't like it off the principle that it feels kind of pointless and arbitrary to strip the character of his non-mario feel but the design itself is okay I guess. Good news, you didn't have to touch a single one to beat the game.

It's a very solid spinoff of Odyssey. People assumed this was the next mainline 3D Mario game, which never made any sense. Obviously that game will come in a year or two. But if you view this as a lower budget spinoff of Odyssey, it's a ton of fun with a really unique game design. It probably wasn't an ideal game to launch a console with, but if the proper switch 2 games aren't done they aren't done, and this is what was available.

I don't think I get the approach with Bananza Odyssey and BoTW because it seems like the idea is to make a really fun/satisfying moveset and then make every move available from the start, but in practice it just means that the most fun you'll ever have with it is when you're just starting.
First two levels of Banaza were really fun, and the verticality, multi-direction punching, destructable environment stuff was awesome but by hilltop zone it sunk it that it was just going to be the same destructable environments and the same challenge rooms for an entire game.
By the third layer I stopped bothering to do any of the side rooms, by the fourth layer I stopped going after any unnecessary bananas or fossils, and by the fifth layer I stopped playing. After getting zebra and realizing the only new gimmicks were gonna be a handful more transformations I couldn't get excited to keep going.
