I mean that is blatantly obvious. The game pretty much screams Nintendo being salty that Rare and Retro's take on DK outshines theirs and so they redesigned him to look ugly and make his game more of classic Mario (except adding the DK animals and K. Rool because they still need to jump on that nostalgia train since nobody would play the game otherwise)
