Sad and frustrated. I already know I'm in the minority, though, so it's not like it matters.

My biggest problem with the new donkey kong design is that they also aged down pauline for no given reason and refused to elaborate on what this actually implies as far as the DK and the Mario timeline go. They basically just said "we wanted to, and now the players can just make up whatever they want". I could have accepted that this was a different DK with the new design, or that it was the same DK from the DK series. But they made all of these decisions together in a way that has just made autists sperg out about some supposed DK timeline in a way that made me with they didn't even bother with the redesigns.

It's genuinely tragic. I think the new design is ugly as sin, it certainly feels weird that they redesigned diddy and dixie too. I understand they wanted more synergy for the sake of the movie(s) and whatnot, but it all just feels like one big monkey's paw: kremlings are back but dk himself gets a horrible redesign. It just sucks all the way around.

I've accepted it. Bananza really helped smooth over the new design for me, Mario Kart World didn't help because the graphics in that game make him look underbaked.
Nintendo's at least shown that they care a lot about DK and only changed his design after a lot of internal debate (and they only changed his face because they wanted to make DK turn into a roided out Zebra). I think about how some other video game characters get all fucked up because they get passed to new people who believe it's their god given right to reshape them in their own image just look at Crash 4, and I am thankful that this is nowhere near that extreme or tone-deaf.

You want to know the one thing that separates having reasonable objections to a character's new design and just being an autist? It's the nu-character's ability to closely resemble their original counterpart with minor tweaks that make sense in-universe and whether you are able to find gratitude in that fact or completely take it for granted shows what side of the aisle you're on whether you are aware of it or not.

TFB's Crash Bandicoot can't be made to resemble his ND design without outright being given a low polygon skin. The Yoshi we've been plagued with since Story looks "off" when they try to replicate his past role of being a mount sidekick. Rayman looks and acts drastically different depending entirely on the tone and atmosphere each respective game wants to go for leaving little to no "blending" of his traits to appeal to a wider range of fans. Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic may as well be two separate characters. Bananza DK literally just needs to furrow his brow and at worst he's just slightly off-model but is still the same character.

Nintendo was the one that pushed the banana stuff more than Rare desu. The first game had the banana hoard which was part of the reason DK went to beat the Kremlings up (the other two being they invaded his island and they kidnapped Diddy. Also Cranky scolded him for it.) Second game had pretty much no banana stuff outside of the banana coins I guess. 3 had the banana birds but they're entirely optional and unrelated to the story at large. 64 had the Golden Bananas and Banana Fairies, but the Golden Bananas are just something K. Rool uses to try and busy the kongs. And the kongs feed the bananas they collect to pigs and hippos so they don't even eat them, and they use other fruit too.

Sonic's modern design is pretty fucking good, the core problem with it is that Sonic does not have shoulders, so many of the actions he does with his arms, punching or throwing for example, looks flimsy as shit. It also means there are just, holes in the sides of his torso that his arms stick out of and it makes him look like a cheap plastic toy, I hate his arm holes.
