the issue isnt whether or not peach was justified in turning down mario, the issue is that stories are written with intent and the intent here was to portray mario as a bozo and undermine the legitimacy of their romantic relationship becauae nintendo decides it needed sanitized. people who really love stories immediately intuit that this is a less potent ending probably done to uphold western morality in story telling regarding the damsel in distress plot.

the problem with that is that the princess doesnt get saved because of mysogynistic constructs, she gets saved because she and the hero love each other. the quest isn't to win a princess as a prize, it's to rescue someone you love. the deliberate misinterpretation of this element of storytelling leads to a less captivating plot. in this case it felt like nintendo closing the book on the concept entirely, and i wish they would have waited til the next game to do it and ended with peach kissing mario on the nose ala 64 one last time.
