That's what I meant by the earth terraforming in real time. It's actually deleting and creating geometry, and patching over the new geometry with clean textures. That takes a lot more effort from the system than a simple matrix transform. A matrix transform is when you use use simple equations to *reposition* points. You might have seen it in some old N64 games, when they want to create a wave-like effect. That's just pushing points around. It's different than actually erasing and creating geometry. You're seeing the cost of an actual dynamic system.

It might be using voxels.(it looks like it to my eyes, but it might not)
But voxels are actually very taxing. Especially when you want to transform pixels into polygons. Notice that the geometry in the game isn't square. They're converting volumetric data into a mesh. The volumetric data is most likely voxel in nature. But in order to get the shape of an object that isn't square, you have to interpolate between the points of the blocks. And if you don't want the interpolated geometry to look like shit, then you need to work with smaller levels of voxels in order to get more refined results.
You can see in the wave, where the geometry moves up to the next row in the grid, but doesn't yet interpolate cleanly to the previous row, causing seams to appear. Because as the wave moves outward, it has to constantly re-interpolate the geometry. This is much less of an issue with other voxel games that opt to make their geometry perfectly square. For them, changing squares is about as simple as an index look up. And interpolating the textures is as simple as knowing what your neighboring textures are, and again doing a simple index look up. They skip the hard part, where you have to actually try to make your geometry appear organic.

I think it's fun, I like how there's a level design flow into starting/maintaining Bananza mode a bit like Super Sonic. While the platforming is simple, I like the use of different materials and hardness ratings that affect how you interact with the terrain. Really it's more of a puzzle platformer but with some actiony smash-em-up segments to increase the gameplay pace. I know people are complaining about the bosses being weaksauce (and they are), but some of the terrain integration in the boss fights are fun and way more enjoyable than having a more threatening/difficult boss. Really excited to speedrun it because it looks both exploit-rich and relatively short through the core quest.

Game is legitimately fun, hard to put down. Feels like a more cohesive gaming experience than Odyssey, it has a more fully realized vision and direction. Just tried the demo at a kiosk for about 10 mins. I checked out both levels in the demo. I think kids will like it but it just doesn't feel or look right and leaves much to be desired. I would absolutely say Odyssey was better.
